In short
This app scores a Virgo Moon with a Capricorn Moon from 16.5 to 24.5 out of 36, median 21.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, and the order of entry makes no difference. Graha Maitri is 4 because Saturn counts Mercury a friend, but the 5/9 trine between the signs sets Bhakoot to 0 under the rule the engine adopted in October 2026.
Virgo and Capricorn are two earth signs in trine, and many readers expect a trine to score well. In this app's Ashtakoot engine it does not, at least not on Bhakoot: the 5/9 distance is one of the three that score zero. What the pair does have is a remarkably steady nakshatra picture - Nadi almost always full, Yoni fixed - which keeps every total inside an eight-point band. The details follow.
Sign pages: Virgo, Kanya rashi and Capricorn, Makara rashi. The nakshatra matching guide covers the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator gives the score for two real charts.
Kanya and Makar: more alike than most pairs
Of all the cross-sign pairs on the Virgo pages, this is the one BPHS describes most alike. Sl. 5-5.5 of Ch. 4 groups Vrishabh, Kanya and Makar as the windy signs. Sl. 13-14 calls Kanya Tamasic and "variegated"; Sl. 19-20 says Makar "has predominance of Tamo-Gun", is earthy, and that "Its complexion is variegated". The differences are in strength and form: Kanya is strong by day and biped, Makar strong at night, quadruped in its first half and "footless, moving in water" in its second. Kanya is ruled by Budh, Makar by Shani.
A Virgo Moon sits in Uttara Phalguni (three padas), Hasta (four) or Chitra (two). A Capricorn Moon sits in Uttara Ashadha (three), Shravana (four) or Dhanishta (two). The two signs mirror each other in structure - a three-pada star, a four-pada star, then two padas of a star that continues into the next sign.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Virgo with Capricorn | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Both earth signs, same class value; order does not matter |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | Groups two apart in the engine's table |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 4 | Saturn friendly to Mercury; Mercury neutral to Saturn |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | Capricorn is 5th from Virgo; Virgo is 9th from Capricorn |
Bhakoot and the 5/9 decision
Counted inclusively, Capricorn is the 5th sign from Virgo and Virgo the 9th from Capricorn. Until October 2026 the engine scored that distance 7. Its header now records the change: two published references ([A] and [B]) agree that 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 all score 0 on Bhakoot, so 5/9 joined the other two. The header is also frank that no book in this library contains the rule, and descriptions elsewhere vary - some practitioners read a trine between the Moons more kindly. The Bhakoot dosha page explains the term.
Graha Maitri: a friend on one side
In the friendships the engine takes from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Saturn's friends are Mercury and Venus, while Mercury's are the Sun and Venus. Saturn therefore counts Mercury a friend, and Mercury, having no listed view of Saturn, is neutral. Friend-plus-neutral scores 4 out of 5 on Graha Maitri, a value the engine's four references agree on.
Vashya (the koota) gives its lowest value, 0.5, because the two signs sit two groups apart in the engine's table. Varna (the koota), which can depend on entry order, does not here: both signs take the same value, so it is 1 either way and the whole page holds in both orders. Varna is named only as the koota's technical term.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
The striking feature of this pair is how little the nakshatras vary. Yoni is 2 in all 81 pairings: Virgo's Cow, Buffalo and Tiger and Capricorn's Mongoose, Monkey and Lion never match and never form one of the engine's enemy pairs. Nadi is 8 in 77 pairings. Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are Aadi, while Uttara Ashadha and Shravana are Antya, and the only overlap is Chitra (Madhya) with Dhanishta (also Madhya) - the two border stars, 4 pairings in all.
Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in 12. Gana is the one real variable: the three stars on each side run Manushya, Deva, Rakshasa in the same order. Matching positions score 6 (29 pairings), and the Deva-Rakshasa crossings - Hasta with Dhanishta, Chitra with Shravana - score 0 (16 pairings). The rest, 36, score 3.
The range of totals
The engine's 81 totals run from 16.5 to 24.5 out of 36, median 21.5, the same whichever Moon is entered first. The sign kootas supply 5.5 in every case and Yoni 2, so 7.5 points are fixed; Nadi supplies 8 almost always. The eight-point band between floor and ceiling is mostly Gana, with Tara and the rare Nadi zero making up the rest.
The floor has a curious source. The lowest pairing is not the one with a Gana clash; it is a Chitra Moon with a Dhanishta Moon. Those two border stars share the Madhya Nadi, so Nadi drops to 0, yet they are both Rakshasa in Gana (6) and favourable to each other on Tara (3). Add the fixed 7.5 and the result is 16.5. A Gana clash with Nadi intact still lands higher, because Nadi is worth more than Gana.
Put plainly, the Bhakoot zero caps this pair: even when every nakshatra koota is at its best, the total does not pass 24.5. Whether a given couple sits at 16.5 or 24.5 depends on their stars, which the nakshatra calculator gives from a birth time. Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the same sign can hold three different stars.
Worked example: Virgo 1 degree with Capricorn 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Virgo is in Uttara Phalguni; a Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn is in Uttara Ashadha. The two stars share the "Uttara" name and, in the engine's Gana list, the Manushya label:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: same class value |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups two apart |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable both ways |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Cow and Mongoose |
| Graha Maitri | 4 | 5 | Sign: Saturn friendly, Mercury neutral |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Manushya and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 5/9 distance |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi and Antya |
| Total | 24.5 | 36 |
This example is the best this sign pair can do: 24.5 is the maximum across all 81 pairings. Every nakshatra koota that can be full is full - Tara 3, Gana 6, Nadi 8 - and Yoni sits at its fixed 2. What separates it from a higher score is entirely on the sign side: Vashya at 0.5 and Bhakoot at 0.
The Tara result can be checked by hand. Counting inclusively from Uttara Phalguni to Uttara Ashadha is 10, which leaves remainder 1 after dividing by 9; counting back is 19, which also leaves 1. Neither is 3, 5 or 7, the engine's unfavourable remainders, so both directions pass and Tara is the full 3.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign descriptions quoted above and the friendship lists behind Graha Maitri. It does not contain Ashtakoot, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology - a search for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni finds no matching rule. Nothing in the corpus speaks to Virgo with Capricorn as a marriage pairing, and the 5/9 Bhakoot rule in particular comes from web references, not from a text in this library.
What a score does not tell you
A total capped at 24.5 by a rule change is a good reminder that these numbers describe a rule set, not two people. This app gives no verdict on marriage. Mars placement is assessed separately, as Mangal dosha: what it is and is not explains; Nadi dosha covers the rare same-Nadi case; the love compatibility calculator compares two people without Ashtakoot.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Virgo Moon and a Capricorn Moon?
- From 16.5 to 24.5 out of 36, median 21.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app. The order of entry does not change it.
- Both are earth signs in trine - why is Bhakoot 0?
- The engine scores Bhakoot 0 for 5/9 distances, following two published references that agree; it scored 7 before October 2026. The classical books in this library do not contain the rule, and some practitioners treat trines differently.
- Are Mercury and Saturn friends?
- Half-way. In the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Saturn counts Mercury a friend while Mercury is neutral to Saturn. That scores 4 out of 5 on Graha Maitri.
- Is Nadi dosha likely for this pair?
- Rarely, in the engine's terms: Nadi is 0 in only 4 of the 81 pairings, all of them a Chitra Moon with a Dhanishta Moon.
- How do we see our own score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool to get all eight kootas from your real nakshatras.
