In short
With Virgo entered first, this app scores a Virgo-Aquarius pair from 7.5 to 25 out of 36, median 15.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; with Aquarius first every total is a point higher. The 6/8 distance zeroes Bhakoot, and Nadi is 0 in 53 pairings because both signs are dominated by Aadi-Nadi stars.
On paper Virgo and Aquarius begin with some advantages in Guna Milan: their lords are on good terms and they share a Vashya group. The trouble is elsewhere. The two signs sit six and eight apart, which the engine scores 0 on Bhakoot, and most of their birth stars belong to the same Nadi. Together those two facts produce the second-lowest median of any Virgo pair - and, because the stars vary so much, also one of the widest ranges.
The signs: Virgo, Kanya rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The system: the nakshatra matching guide. A real score: the Kundli matching calculator.
Kanya and Kumbh in BPHS Ch. 4
BPHS draws these two signs in similar strokes. Kanya (Sl. 13-14) rises with its head, is biped and of medium build, strong in daytime and Tamasic. Kumbh (Sl. 21-21.5) "represents a man holding a pot", is biped and of medium build, "very strong in daytime", rises with its head and "is Tamasic". The differences: Kanya is an earth sign ruled by Budh, a "hill-resorter"; Kumbh is airy, ruled by Shani, and "resorts to deep water". Sl. 5-5.5 calls Kanya windy and Kumbh mixed.
The Virgo Moon has nine possible padas - Uttara Phalguni (three), Hasta (four), Chitra (two). The Aquarius Moon has the last two padas of Dhanishta, all four of Shatabhisha and the first three of Purva Bhadrapada. That last fact turns out to matter a great deal for Nadi.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Virgo first | Aquarius first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 0 | 1 | Order-dependent comparison of class values |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | 2 | Same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 4 | 4 | Saturn friendly to Mercury; Mercury neutral |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | Aquarius is 6th from Virgo; Virgo is 8th from Aquarius |
Graha Maitri (the koota) is a solid 4. The engine's friendship lists, from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, give Saturn two friends, Mercury and Venus; Mercury's friends are the Sun and Venus, so it is neutral to Saturn. One friend and one neutral earns 4 of 5. Vashya (the koota) is full because the engine places both signs in the same group.
Bhakoot (the koota) is 0. Counting inclusively, Aquarius is the 6th sign from Virgo and Virgo the 8th from Aquarius, and 6/8 was a zero-scoring distance in the engine even before its October 2026 revision; the revision, based on two agreeing web references, added 5/9 to it. The Bhakoot dosha page covers what the term is and is not.
Varna (the koota) depends on order for this pair. The engine gives the point only when the first-entered sign's class value is not lower than the second's; here that holds with Aquarius first and fails with Virgo first. So the same couple will see a one-point difference depending on how they are typed in, and the engine's header records that as unresolved. Varna is used strictly as the koota's name.
What the nakshatras add - and take away
Here is the core of this pair. In the engine's Nadi table, Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are Aadi, and so are Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. That puts seven of the nine Virgo padas and seven of the nine Aquarius padas in the same Nadi. Add Chitra and Dhanishta, which are both Madhya, and the same-Nadi zero appears in 53 of the 81 pairings. Only 28 earn the 8.
Gana is not much kinder. Dhanishta and Shatabhisha are Rakshasa, Purva Bhadrapada Manushya. A Hasta Moon, which is Deva, scores 0 against either of the Rakshasa stars - 24 pairings. Yoni adds one more clash: Hasta is the Buffalo and Shatabhisha the Horse, which the engine lists as natural enemies, so those 16 pairings score 0 on Yoni too. Elsewhere Yoni is 2. Tara gives 1.5 in 61 pairings and 3 in 20.
The range of totals
With Virgo entered first, the 81 totals run from 7.5 to 25 out of 36, median 15.5. With Aquarius first: 8.5 to 26, median 16.5. The sign kootas fix 6 (or 7). The other 21 points can be nearly all present or nearly all absent, which is why this pair spans more than seventeen points.
The floor of 7.5 has a single, identifiable cause: a Hasta Moon with a Shatabhisha Moon. That pairing loses on Nadi (both Aadi), on Gana (Deva with Rakshasa) and on Yoni (Buffalo with Horse) all at once, and picks up only 1.5 on Tara. Every one of the 16 Hasta-Shatabhisha pairings scores the same. The ceiling comes from the other direction - Moons in different Nadis, with Gana and Tara aligned.
This is a pair where the stars decide almost everything, and a birth time is the only way to know them. The nakshatra calculator finds yours; Moon sign and nakshatra explains why one sign contains several stars.
Worked example: Virgo 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree
At 1 degree, the Virgo Moon is in Uttara Phalguni and the Aquarius Moon in Dhanishta. Virgo entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: first value lower |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same group |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Cow and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 4 | 5 | Sign: Saturn friendly, Mercury neutral |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Manushya and Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 6/8 distance |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi and Madhya |
| Total | 20.5 | 36 |
This pairing lands five points above the median, and Nadi is the reason: Dhanishta is the only Aquarius star outside the Aadi group, so it escapes the clash that pulls most pairings down. On Tara, the inclusive count from Uttara Phalguni to Dhanishta is 12, remainder 3, which the engine treats as unfavourable; back from Dhanishta it is 17, remainder 8, which passes - hence 1.5.
Purva Bhadrapada, the third Aquarius star, sits in between. It is Manushya in Gana, so it never produces the Deva-Rakshasa zero, and it is the Lion in Yoni, which has no enemy among the Virgo animals. But it is Aadi in Nadi, which means a Virgo Moon in Uttara Phalguni or Hasta facing it still loses the full 8. Only a Chitra Moon, in Madhya, collects Nadi against Purva Bhadrapada.
Move the Aquarius Moon forward a few degrees into Shatabhisha and the same Virgo Moon now shares the Aadi Nadi; Nadi drops to 0 and the total falls with it. That single step across a star boundary is worth more than all four sign kootas combined.
What the classical texts say
The corpus gives the sign descriptions and the friendship table, and is silent on matching. BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology contain no Ashtakoot rule, and none addresses a Virgo Moon with an Aquarius Moon. The Bhakoot distances and the Graha Maitri point scale used here come from web references listed in the engine's source.
What a score does not tell you
A low median is a feature of how this rule set treats two signs; it is not a forecast for any couple, and this app does not issue verdicts on marriage. A same-Nadi result is explained, without alarm, in Nadi dosha. Mars placement is a separate matter covered in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not, and the love compatibility calculator offers a different, lighter comparison.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Virgo Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
- From 7.5 to 25 out of 36 with Virgo entered first (median 15.5), and 8.5 to 26 with Aquarius first (median 16.5), over all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why is Nadi so often 0 for this pair?
- Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada are all Aadi in the engine's table, and they cover seven of the nine padas on each side. Same Nadi scores 0, which happens in 53 of the 81 pairings.
- Why is Bhakoot 0?
- Aquarius is the 6th sign from Virgo and Virgo the 8th from Aquarius. The engine scores 6/8, 2/12 and 5/9 as 0, following published references; the classical books in this library do not contain the rule.
- Which star pairing gives the lowest score?
- A Hasta Moon with a Shatabhisha Moon. It loses Nadi, Gana and Yoni together and scores 7.5 with Virgo entered first. Every other pairing scores higher.
- Does the order of entry matter?
- Yes, by one point, through the Varna koota: 0 with Virgo first, 1 with Aquarius first. The engine notes this as an open question.
- Should a low score stop a marriage?
- This app does not give that verdict. A score describes two Moon positions under one traditional rule set. For your real kootas use the match tool.
