In short

Opposite Moon signs Virgo and Pisces score 14.5 to 29.5 out of 36 in this app, median 24.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Virgo entered first, and one point lower throughout with Pisces first. The 7/7 opposition keeps Bhakoot at 7, while Jupiter's listed enmity to Mercury holds Graha Maitri to 1.

Virgo and Pisces face each other across the zodiac: each is the 7th sign from the other. In Ashtakoot matching an opposition is not one of the failing Bhakoot distances, so this pair starts with seven points that several of its neighbours lack. It then gives most of them back on Graha Maitri, because the lords of the two signs - Mercury and Jupiter - are not on good terms in the classical table. The nakshatras settle the rest, and for this pair they are fairly generous.

The signs are covered at Virgo, Kanya rashi and Pisces, Meena rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the full system; the Kundli matching calculator gives the score for two actual births.

Kanya and Meen in the text

Both are dual signs under BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5, and there the likeness largely ends. Kanya (Sl. 13-14) is an earth sign, a biped "hill-resorter", strong by day, Tamasic, ruled by Budh. Meen (Sl. 22-24) "resembles a pair of fish", is watery, "strong at night", "predominant with Sattva-Gun", footless, and "denotes resoluteness"; it is ruled by Guru. Sl. 5-5.5 calls Kanya windy and leaves Meen among the phlegmatic signs. The text treats them, in short, as a matched pair of contrasts.

A Virgo Moon falls in Uttara Phalguni, Hasta or Chitra (three, four and two padas). A Pisces Moon falls in the last pada of Purva Bhadrapada, or in Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati, four padas each. The 81 pairings below are every combination of those quarters.

The kootas this sign pair fixes

KootaOut ofVirgo firstPisces firstWhy
Varna110First class value compared with the second
Vashya211Adjacent Vashya groups
Graha Maitri511Mercury neutral to Jupiter; Jupiter hostile to Mercury
Bhakoot777Opposite signs, distance 7/7
Fixed for all 81 pairings (engine-facts.mjs virgo-and-pisces-moon-sign-compatibility, run 2026-10-14; Pisces-first column from a scratch run the same day).

Bhakoot (the koota) counts 7 from Virgo to Pisces and 7 back. The engine fails only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, a rule it takes from two agreeing web references because no book in this library has one, so an opposition keeps the full 7. That single koota is worth more than the other three sign kootas together.

Graha Maitri (the koota) is the weak spot. The engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 give Jupiter two enemies, Mercury and Venus. Mercury lists only the Moon as an enemy, so it is neutral towards Jupiter. Neutral on one side and hostile on the other scores 1; the engine notes that its references disagree on this cell (0.5 against 1) and keeps its earlier value.

Varna (the koota) depends on entry order. The engine awards it when the first sign's class value is not lower than the second's, which is the case with Virgo first but not with Pisces first. The result is a one-point shift in every total, recorded in the engine's header as an open point. The word is only the koota's technical name.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

Tara is constant: 1.5 in all 81 pairings, so it never moves the total. The variation comes from the other three. Nadi is 8 in 66 pairings. It falls to 0 in 15: when an Aadi Virgo Moon (Uttara Phalguni or Hasta) meets the single Pisces pada of Purva Bhadrapada, also Aadi, and when Chitra (Madhya) meets Uttara Bhadrapada (Madhya). Revati, which is Antya, never shares a Nadi with any Virgo star.

Yoni has a nice symmetry. Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada are both the Cow in the engine's table, so a Virgo Moon in the first meeting a Pisces Moon in the second scores the full 4 - 12 pairings. The same Cow is the Tiger's enemy, so Chitra (Tiger) facing Uttara Bhadrapada scores 0, in 8 pairings. All other combinations give 2. Gana is generous: 6 in 31 pairings, 3 in 42, and 0 only in the 8 where a Chitra Moon (Rakshasa) meets a Revati Moon (Deva).

The range of totals

With Virgo entered first, the engine's totals run from 14.5 to 29.5 out of 36, median 24.5. With Pisces first, 13.5 to 28.5, median 23.5. The sign kootas fix 10 (or 9) and Tara adds a constant 1.5. The fifteen-point spread is Nadi first, then Gana and Yoni.

The median is high for a pair with a Graha Maitri of 1. The reason is that the nakshatra kootas rarely fail together here: Nadi is mostly intact, Gana zeroes in only 8 pairings, and Yoni zeroes in only 8. Revati Moons do particularly well - different Nadi from every Virgo star - while Purva Bhadrapada, despite its single pada, is the star most likely to cost Nadi.

All of that depends on knowing the star, which in turn depends on a birth time. The nakshatra calculator finds it; Moon sign and nakshatra explains why a sign and a star are separate inputs to matching.

Worked example: Virgo 1 degree with Pisces 1 degree

At 1 degree each, the Virgo Moon is in Uttara Phalguni and the Pisces Moon in the last pada of Purva Bhadrapada. Virgo first:

KootaScoreOut ofWhat decided it
Varna11Sign: first value not lower

Gana66Nakshatra: Manushya and Manushya

Nadi08Nakshatra: both Aadi
Total19.536
ashtakoot() for Virgo 1 deg with Pisces 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Pisces first: 18.5.

The example is one of the 15 same-Nadi pairings, and it shows how much that costs: five points under the median despite a full Gana and a full Bhakoot. The engine labels the result "traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly". A Pisces Moon only a degree or two later, in Uttara Bhadrapada, would keep the Manushya Gana, change Yoni to Cow-and-Cow and restore Nadi - and the total would climb to the top of the range.

Tara by hand: from Uttara Phalguni to Purva Bhadrapada is 14 counting inclusively, remainder 5, which the engine treats as unfavourable; from Purva Bhadrapada back to Uttara Phalguni is 15, remainder 6, which passes. One good direction gives 1.5.

That climb is worth spelling out, because it marks the ceiling. An Uttara Phalguni Moon with an Uttara Bhadrapada Moon keeps the fixed 10 from the signs and the constant 1.5 from Tara, then adds Yoni 4 (Cow with Cow), Gana 6 (Manushya with Manushya) and Nadi 8 (Aadi with Madhya). That is 29.5, the highest total any Virgo-Pisces pairing reaches in the engine. Only Graha Maitri, Vashya and Tara stand between it and a near-perfect score, and for this sign pair all three come out the same in every one of the 81 pairings, whichever stars the two Moons occupy.

What the classical texts say

The corpus supplies the sign descriptions and the friendship lists, nothing on matching. BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology contain no Ashtakoot rule, and none comments on a Virgo Moon with a Pisces Moon. The engine's Bhakoot rule and its Graha Maitri points are from web references named in its source.

What a score does not tell you

An opposition in the sky is not opposition between two people, and a Graha Maitri of 1 is a line in a table, not a personality report. This app gives no verdict on marriage. Mars placement is a separate check - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not - and a same-Nadi result is explained in Nadi dosha. The love compatibility calculator gives a non-Ashtakoot comparison.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Virgo Moon and a Pisces Moon?
From 14.5 to 29.5 out of 36 with Virgo entered first (median 24.5) and 13.5 to 28.5 with Pisces first (median 23.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Do opposite Moon signs fail Bhakoot?
Not in this engine. A 7/7 opposition scores the full 7; only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score 0.
Why is Graha Maitri so low?
Jupiter lists Mercury as an enemy in the engine's friendship table (from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55), while Mercury is neutral to Jupiter. That combination scores 1 of 5.
Which Pisces star is kindest to a Virgo Moon on Nadi?
Revati. It is Antya in the engine's table and no Virgo star is, so Nadi is always 8 for a Revati Moon in this pair.
Does the order of entry matter?
Yes, by one point, through Varna. Virgo first scores 1 there; Pisces first scores 0.
How do we get our real score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool. The nakshatras settle Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi.
