In short
The Moon in Capricorn is the Moon in Saturn's sign, a neutral sign by nature that reads friendly or enemy in a given chart. Saravali Ch. 23 gives it one descriptive line and six aspect lines that change the reading. The house Capricorn occupies from your Lagna, and the house Cancer makes, decide where it works.
The Moon in Capricorn is the Moon in a sign ruled by Saturn. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 makes the Moon the mind, and the sign it occupies at birth is the moon sign, or Janma Rashi - the sign this app counts transits and Sade Sati from. So this one placement is read twice: as a planet in a sign, with a dignity and a classical description, and as the reference point for much of the rest of the chart. What it does in a given chart depends on the house Capricorn occupies, the house the Moon rules from your Lagna, and the planets that aspect it.
This page covers only the combination. For the Moon as a graha - significations, strength, phases and its Mahadasha - start with the Moon in Vedic astrology. For the sign - its element, its nakshatras and what it means rising - see Capricorn, Makara Rashi. The short definition of the moon sign itself is under moon sign. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Moon in Capricorn: dignity, and how this app decides it
The neighbouring placements are Moon in Sagittarius and Moon in Aquarius; the dignity terms used below are collected under dignity.
Capricorn is neither the Moon's exaltation, its debilitation nor its own sign. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts the Moon's exaltation in Taurus, deepest at 3 degrees, and its debilitation in Scorpio; Sl. 51-54 gives its Mooltrikon in Taurus after the first 3 degrees; its own sign is Cancer. Those cases have their own pages: Moon in Taurus, Moon in Scorpio and Moon in Cancer.
So the Moon in Capricorn is judged by its relation to the sign's lord, Saturn. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 names the Moon's natural friends as the Sun and Mercury and says the Moon has no enemies. Saturn is neither, so by the natural relation alone Capricorn is a neutral sign for the Moon. See naisargika maitri (natural friendship).
| Lord Saturn from the Moon (temporary) | Fivefold result (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58) | Label in this engine | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th: friend | Friend | Friendly sign | One quarter |
| 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th: enemy | Enemy | Enemy sign | Nil |
| No chart (natural relation only) | Neutral | Neutral | One eighth |
How the engine decides
dignityOf runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign. The Moon in Capricorn passes none of them, so the label comes from the last step, the fivefold relation (panchadha maitri) between the Moon and Saturn. That is the natural relation combined with a temporary one read from your own chart: by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56, a planet in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from another is its temporary friend, and in any other position its temporary enemy. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58 then combines the two. So the degree of the Moon never changes the label in Capricorn, but where Saturn sits does. The same Moon at the same degree can be Friendly sign in one chart and Enemy sign in another.
The engine gives Friendly sign a score of 1 and a sthana strength of 6.25, Neutral 0 and 5, and Enemy sign -1 and 0, so the difference shows up in the strength figures too. The temporary relation has its own glossary entry: tatkalika maitri.
The nakshatras the Moon moves through in Capricorn
Capricorn holds padas 2, 3, 4 of Uttara Ashadha, all four padas of Shravana, padas 1 and 2 of Dhanishta. For the Moon the nakshatra matters especially: the birth Moon's nakshatra sets the first Mahadasha of the Vimshottari sequence, whose lord this engine takes from the nakshatra's place in the cycle of nine. So a Moon in Capricorn can open with any of three different Mahadashas, depending on its degree. The nakshatra pages go further: Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Capricorn | Nakshatra lord (first Mahadasha) | Full length of that Mahadasha |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uttara Ashadha | 2, 3, 4 | Sun | 6 years |
| Shravana | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Moon | 10 years |
| Dhanishta | 1, 2 | Mars | 7 years |
What the classical texts say about the Moon in Capricorn
Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 65
Saravali Ch. 23, "Effects of the Moon in Various Rasis", gives each sign one descriptive line for the Moon and then six lines for the Moon in that sign aspected by each other planet. In paraphrase, the Capricorn line lists a singer and poet, fond of truth and charity, distinguished, famous and not easily angered, but also unkind, shameless and very miserly, with low enthusiasm. It adds an aversion to cold and a stout or emaciated build - description, not medical advice - and one line about conduct towards a teacher's household that is reported only as the text's claim. It is a catalogue of qualities, not a single verdict.
Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 66-71: the aspect lines
These six lines are where the reading turns. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: penniless, unhappy, wandering, busy with others' work, unclean, yet clever.
- Aspected by Mars: abundant riches, great generosity, fortune, vehicles and bravery.
- Aspected by Mercury: dull, living away from home, without spouse, unsteady, and without happiness or money.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a king, incomparably brave, with royal qualities and many relationships, children and friends.
- Aspected by Venus: wealth, ornaments, vehicles and garlands, but blame and no children.
- Aspected by Saturn: indolence and untruthfulness, yet money.
Mars - exalted in Capricorn by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 - and Jupiter, debilitated in it, both give strong lines here, so the aspecting planet's own dignity in this sign does not decide its aspect line in this section. The Sun and Mercury read poorly. Saturn, the sign's lord, gives a mixed line: money with indolence.
When Saravali says the results come to pass
Saravali closes the chapter with a condition (Ch. 23 Sl. 88): the effects described come to pass fully only when the lord of the Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the Moon are all strong, and they vary with the dignities of the dispositor and of the aspecting planet. For a Moon in Capricorn the dispositor is Saturn, so Saturn's own condition is part of the reading. The same book's chapter on dignities adds a general line. Ch. 45 has a line for the Moon in a friendly sign (Sl. 12-14: happy and very honourable) and one for an inimical sign (Sl. 19-21: loss of brightness, and heart complaints - the text's claim, not medical advice), but none for a neutral sign. Since the fivefold relation can make Capricorn either friendly or inimical for the Moon in a given chart, which line is even relevant depends on the chart.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS supplies the dignities, relationships and ratios used above (Ch. 3 Sl. 49-60). A search of the BPHS file found no sign-by-sign description of the Moon of the kind Saravali gives, so for the sign itself Saravali is the only text in the corpus with a character line.
Bhrigu Sutras' commentary on the Moon in the 1st house quotes Chamatkar Chintamani listing Capricorn among the eight signs in which a rising Moon reads poorly. The commentator does not discuss Capricorn separately, so this page adds nothing to that.
How the sign changes the houses the Moon rules and sits in
The Moon rules one sign, Cancer. Counting whole-sign houses, the table gives where Capricorn and Cancer fall from each Lagna, and the role BPHS Ch. 34 (Sl. 19-44) gives the Moon there, as coded in this app's Yoga Karaka table. The house pages - for example Moon in the 1st house, Moon in the 4th house and Moon in the 10th house - go further.
| Lagna | House of the Moon (Capricorn) | House the Moon rules (Cancer) | Moon's role, BPHS Ch. 34 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 10th | 4th | not named |
| Taurus | 9th | 3rd | functional malefic |
| Gemini | 8th | 2nd | maraka (killer) |
| Cancer | 7th | 1st | auspicious |
| Leo | 6th | 12th | maraka (killer) |
| Virgo | 5th | 11th | functional malefic |
| Libra | 4th | 10th | Yoga Karaka |
| Scorpio | 3rd | 9th | auspicious and Yoga Karaka |
| Sagittarius | 2nd | 8th | not named |
| Capricorn | 1st | 7th | functional malefic |
| Aquarius | 12th | 6th | functional malefic |
| Pisces | 11th | 5th | auspicious |
In Capricorn the Moon sits in the 7th sign counted from its own sign, so in every row the house it occupies is the 7th from the house it rules. BPHS Ch. 34's roles turn only on lordship, not on the sign the Moon is in.
Worked example: 9 March 2002, 08:53 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Aries rises at 10.13 degrees. The Moon is at 0.24 degrees of Capricorn, in Uttara Ashadha pada 2, in the 10th house, not combust, and labelled Enemy sign. The Moon is never retrograde, and the engine marks it combust only within 12 degrees of the Sun.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aquarius 24.5 | Purva Bhadrapada (2) | 11 | Neutral |
| Moon | Capricorn 0.24 | Uttara Ashadha (2) | 10 | Enemy sign |
| Mars | Aries 11.43 | Ashwini (4) | 1 | Moolatrikona |
| Mercury | Aquarius 1.9 | Dhanishta (3) | 11 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Gemini 11.85 | Ardra (2) | 3 | Enemy sign |
| Venus | Pisces 7.47 | Uttara Bhadrapada (2) | 12 | Exalted |
| Saturn | Taurus 14.8 | Rohini (2) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Rahu | Taurus 28.92, retrograde | Mrigashira (2) | 2 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Scorpio 28.92, retrograde | Jyeshtha (4) | 8 | Neutral |
Dignity. Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, is in Taurus, the 5th sign counted from the Moon, so by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 it is the Moon's temporary enemy. Combined with the natural relation (neutral), BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58 gives enemy, and the engine labels the Moon Enemy sign. Had Saturn stood in a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the Moon, the same Moon would read Friendly sign.
Lordship. With Aries rising, Capricorn is the 10th house and Cancer, the Moon's own sign, is the 4th, so the Moon here is the lord of the 4th sitting in the 10th. In the engine's BPHS Ch. 34 table for a Aries Lagna, the Moon is not named in any of the four roles.
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th, as in SPECIAL_DRISHTI in relationshipIntelligenceEngine.js), none of the six other grahas aspects Capricorn in this chart. So none of the Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 66-71 lines applies, and only the bare sign line does.
Company. No other graha shares Capricorn with the Moon in this chart. The Moon's nakshatra, Uttara Ashadha, is ruled by the Sun in the Vimshottari cycle, so this chart opens in a Sun Mahadasha.

How often the Moon is in Capricorn
In this app's sample the Moon was in Capricorn in 432 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (14.4 per cent). That figure needs a warning. The sample steps 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes from one moment to the next. Bhrigu Sutras gives the Moon's round of the zodiac as 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes, so one step moves the Moon about four signs and successive samples keep landing in the same three signs, four apart. The table shows all twelve signs from the same run.
| Signs four apart | Moon in each sign, of 3,000 sampled moments |
|---|---|
| Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | 307, 312, 301 |
| Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | 419, 411, 432 |
| Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | 274, 277, 267 |
| Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | 0, 0, 0 |
So for the Moon the sample says more about the sampling grid than about the sky. Over any real month the Moon passes through every sign; the engine's own transit table gives it about 2.25 days in each.
Checking the Moon in Capricorn in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Moon is in Capricorn. Note its degree and nakshatra.
- Find Saturn, the lord of Capricorn. Count from the Moon's sign to Saturn's sign: the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th makes a temporary friend, anything else a temporary enemy. That decides the label.
- Note the house Capricorn occupies and the house Cancer occupies: those are where the Moon sits and what it rules.
- List any graha in the 7th sign from Capricorn (Cancer), Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 66-71 line into play.
- For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Moon Mahadasha page; for Saturn's transit around the moon sign, Sade Sati.
What this page does not do
It reports the texts and this app's computation. It predicts no events; bodily or family remarks are the texts' statements, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras.
- Is the Moon exalted or debilitated in Capricorn?
- Neither. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. In Capricorn it is in Saturn's sign, which is a neutral's by nature. See Moon in Taurus.
- Why can my chart call the Moon in Capricorn "Enemy sign" when a table says "neutral"?
- The table gives the natural relation only. Your Kundali page uses the fivefold relation (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58), which adds where Saturn sits from the Moon in your chart. That is why Friendly sign or Enemy sign both occur.
- What does Saravali say about the Moon in Capricorn?
- Ch. 23 Sl. 65 gives the sign line and Sl. 66-71 six aspect lines. Mars - exalted in Capricorn by BPHS Ch.
- Is the Moon in Capricorn the same as a Capricorn moon sign?
- Yes. The sign the Moon occupies at birth is the moon sign, or Janma Rashi. The Moon Sign calculator finds it, and this app counts transits and Sade Sati from it.
- How common is the Moon in Capricorn?
- In this app's sample it was in Capricorn in 432 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. That sample steps about four signs of Moon motion at a time, so the figure reflects the grid, not the sky; the Moon spends about 2.25 days in each sign every month.
