A Capricorn (Makara) Moon is in Sade Sati while Saturn moves through Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius, the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from it. No cycle contains 2027: the 2017-2025 cycle ended on 29 March 2025, and in this app's computation the first after 2026 runs from 8 December 2046 to 6 February 2055, in six stays with one 106-day pause. The rule is on the Sade Sati page, the sign on Capricorn, Makara rashi.
Everyone born with the Moon in sidereal Capricorn shares these dates, whatever the ascendant or dasha, so they are not forecasts. The Sade Sati calculator checks a birth date.
Dates: every stay of Saturn in Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius
Each stay in the three signs during 2046-2055 has a row, as does the pause; a retrograde (vakri) Saturn stepping back over a sign boundary starts a new one. Degrees are the lowest and highest Saturn reaches in the stay.
| Saturn in | From (UTC) | To (UTC) | Days | Degrees | Phase for a Capricorn Moon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sagittarius | 8 Dec 2046 | 7 Mar 2049 | 820 | 0.00-30.00 | Rising (12th) |
| Capricorn | 7 Mar 2049 | 8 Jul 2049 | 123 | 0.00-2.74 | Peak (1st) |
| Sagittarius (re-entered retrograde) | 8 Jul 2049 | 5 Dec 2049 | 150 | 26.11-30.00 | Rising again (12th) |
| Capricorn | 5 Dec 2049 | 25 Feb 2052 | 813 | 0.00-30.00 | Peak again (1st) |
| Aquarius | 25 Feb 2052 | 16 May 2054 | 810 | 0.00-30.00 | Setting (2nd) |
| Pisces (pause) | 16 May 2054 | 30 Aug 2054 | 106 | - | Not active (3rd) |
| Aquarius (re-entered retrograde) | 30 Aug 2054 | 6 Feb 2055 | 160 | 25.42-30.00 | Setting again (2nd) |
Dates are UTC; none is at or after 18:30 UTC, so each is the same date in India. Two are within an hour of midnight there: 25 February 2052 (17:44 UTC, 23:14 in India) and 6 February 2055 (18:14, 23:44). No other change falls within an hour of midnight in India. Other software can differ by hours to a day or two near an ingress: see why Sade Sati dates differ between sources.
The peak opens with a false start: Saturn enters Capricorn on 7 March 2049, turns retrograde at 2.74 degrees on 6 May, slips back into Sagittarius on 8 July and enters Capricorn again on 5 December.
All cycles between 1990 and 2060
This app's 1990-2060 scan holds two complete cycles and part of an earlier one.
| Cycle (first entry to final exit, UTC) | Span | Days inside | Pauses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 Jan 2017 to 29 Mar 2025 | 2,984 days | 2,856 | One, of 127 days |
| 8 Dec 2046 to 6 Feb 2055 | 2,982 days | 2,876 | One, of 106 days |
None of the four dates is at or after 18:30 UTC; only 6 February 2055 (18:14 UTC, 23:44 in India) is within an hour of midnight there.
The 2017 cycle paused early: 127 days with Saturn in Scorpio, the 11th, from 21 June 2017. Its peak began on 23 January 2020 (18:42 UTC, 00:12 on 24 January in India, within an hour of midnight) and had one retrograde re-entry, in 2022. Its part totals were 965, 1,012 and 879 days.
The scan cuts the earlier cycle, so its start, end and length are not quoted. Its stays inside the scan, in days: Sagittarius to 21 March 1990 (cut) and 19 June to 15 December 1990 (179); Capricorn 21 March to 19 June 1990 (90), 15 December 1990 to 6 March 1993 (812) and 11 October to 13 November 1993 (32); Aquarius 6 March to 11 October 1993 (220; 12 October in India), 13 November 1993 to 4 June 1995 (568) and 7 August 1995 to 17 February 1996 (194), after a 65-day pause in Pisces.
The three phases for a Capricorn Moon
The engine ties each phase to a dhaiya (a two-and-a-half-year portion) and shows one sentence beside the active one: "A classical ~7.5-year period of intensified pressure and restructuring - traditionally read as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen" (the engine's wording; the period is not named in BPHS or Saravali, as shown below). The Gochar calculator adds a verdict per sign.
- Rising, Saturn in Sagittarius (12th): 970 days across two stays in the 2046-2055 cycle. Gochara verdict: testing. See Saturn transit in Sagittarius.
- Peak, Saturn in Capricorn (1st): 935 days across two stays. Gochara verdict: testing, with the engine's "intensified" flag; a Tamil palm-leaf list in Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 311) also singles out Saturn in the 1st. See Saturn transit in Capricorn.
- Setting, Saturn in Aquarius (2nd): 971 days across two stays. Gochara verdict: favourable, "steady, disciplined progress". The two rules disagree here, and the app shows both. See Saturn transit in Aquarius.
What the texts say, and what they do not
Sade Sati belongs to a later tradition: neither BPHS (both copies in the library) nor Saravali nor the Bhrigu Sutras has "sade", "sadhe", "seven and a half" or "dhaiya". BPHS and Saravali read Saturn's transit through the Ashtakavarga instead (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72, Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44; Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 1 and 9-10, whose "benefic dots" are BPHS's Rekhas). Only the modern Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, Ch. 7, pp. 311-312) names the period: Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, "once in 30 yrs" (see the Sade Sati page).
The same book (p. 312) reports a North Indian school of thought that names, per Moon sign, the part of Sade Sati with adverse results; for Capricorn, "1st 2.5 yrs". The book counts years, not signs. This page reads the first portion as the rising phase, because the engine pairs each of its three phases with one dhaiya: Saturn in Sagittarius, 970 days across two stays in 2046-2055. The engine ignores the list. Saturn transit for Capricorn Moon sign reads the same signs house by house.
Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 adds that Saturn, like the Moon, gives its transit results while in the end portion of a sign. The text does not say how large that portion is. Both retrograde re-entries of 2046-2055 stay in a sign's last degrees: Sagittarius 26.11-30.00 (8 July 2049) and Aquarius 25.42-30.00 (30 August 2054). The third re-entry, into Capricorn on 5 December 2049, is direct.
Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 also qualifies the Ashtakavarga reading by sign: benefic results predominate in exaltation, own or friendly signs, malefic ones in debilitation or an enemy's sign. This page applies that only where the sign alone settles Saturn's dignity: Capricorn, its own sign (BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20), in the peak, and Aquarius, also its own (Sl. 21-21½), in the setting phase. The engine prints Moolatrikona for 0-20 degrees of the 810-day Aquarius stay (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54) and own sign elsewhere. Sagittarius, Jupiter's sign (Ch. 4 Sl. 17-18½), is neither Saturn's own nor its exaltation or debilitation sign; computed with no birth chart, the engine labels it neutral for Saturn, the natural relation only, as in Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29. The engine's verdict looks at the house only.
Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) adds that when Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon the person turns "a new leaf". For a Capricorn Moon that is Pisces, Jupiter's sign (BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 22-24): Saturn entered it on 29 March 2025, and enters it on 16 May 2054 and for good on 6 February 2055.
What changes the reading for one chart
The phase comes from the Moon sign and the date alone; the sources name three things in the birth chart it cannot see.
- Saturn itself. Advanced Predictive Astrology (pp. 311-312) exempts a yogakaraka Saturn well placed and joined or aspected by benefics, and says Sade Sati "does not make much difference" when the Moon is with Saturn at birth (for a Capricorn Moon, a natal Saturn in Capricorn). See Saturn in Vedic astrology.
- Saturn's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44), whose counts for the three signs differ from chart to chart. This BPHS translation calls the favourable marks Rekhas and the unfavourable ones dots; the Ashtakavarga calculator counts the favourable ones and calls them bindus.
- The running dasha. Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) treats a Saturn Mahadasha during Sade Sati as the harder combination. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Timing feature date the Mahadashas.
What to take care of
Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, pp. 311-312) reads Sade Sati as a testing time of "unpleasant situations and circumstances", with "much depression, disappointment" and "lack of interest in any matter in life", one modern author's reading of a transit, not a medical statement. For students it names poor concentration; early in a career, delayed promotion, an unwanted transfer, financial loss and quarrels with superiors or subordinates; also tension, travel, threats from enemies and theft. Phaladeepika Ch. 26 Sl. 9, as Advanced Predictive Astrology quotes it (p. 312), gives fatigue, loss of wealth and anger for Saturn's passage through the Janma Rasi, which for a Capricorn Moon is Capricorn, the peak. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
- Money: build a reserve for the whole period, avoid large unsecured loans and read every contract twice.
- Work and study: put agreed targets in writing, raise a misunderstanding with a senior early and calmly, weigh a transfer before accepting it, and keep a study routine.
- Health and travel: book the check-up you have been putting off, rest when fatigue builds, and drive with care on long trips. This is not a diagnosis - see a doctor for any symptom.
- Mind: keep sleep and meals regular and stay in touch with people you trust. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Saturn's other named positions from a Capricorn Moon have their own pages: Ardha Ashtama Shani and Ashtama Shani. For 2027 see 2027 for Capricorn Moon sign; for the term, the glossary entry Sade Sati.
- Sade Sati ended for a Capricorn Moon in 2025. Which Saturn phase follows it?
- Ardha Ashtama Shani, Saturn in Aries, the 4th: in this app's computation from 2 June 2027 to 16 April 2030, with pauses in Pisces and Taurus. Sade Sati begins again on 8 December 2046.
- Why did Saturn go back into Capricorn in July 2022, after entering Aquarius in April?
- It turned retrograde in Aquarius on 4 June 2022 (5 June in India) and stepped back into Capricorn on 13 July at 19:27 UTC (00:57 on 14 July in India, within an hour of midnight). The check read the peak again for 187 days, until 16 January 2023 (17 January in India).
- Is Saturn's move into Pisces on 16 May 2054 the end of the 2046-2055 cycle?
- No. Pisces is the 3rd from a Capricorn Moon, so the check reads not active for 106 days. Saturn steps back into Aquarius, retrograde, on 30 August 2054 and leaves it for good on 6 February 2055.
- Does Saturn owning Capricorn soften the peak for a Capricorn Moon?
- Not in the engine, which looks at the house only and reads the peak as testing, intensified. Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 lets benefic results predominate in an own sign, within its Ashtakavarga reading.
