In short
With Sagittarius entered first, this app scores a Sagittarius-Aquarius pair from 17.5 to 28.5 out of 36, median 25.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; Aquarius first adds a point. Bhakoot is full at the 3/11 distance, Graha Maitri is 3, and since neither sign holds a Deva star, Gana never drops below 3.
Sagittarius and Aquarius are three signs apart, fire and air, ruled by Jupiter and Saturn. For Ashtakoot matching they are a tidy case. The distance keeps Bhakoot whole. Tara and Yoni come out the same in every pairing. Gana can only be 3 or 6, because neither sign contains a Deva star. That leaves Nadi as the one koota that can swing the total hard, and for this pair it swings on a single question: is the Sagittarius Moon in Mula?
For the signs see Sagittarius, Dhanu rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching guide covers the kootas; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Dhanu and Kumbh in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 17-18.5 describes Dhanu as head-rising, lorded by Guru, Sattvic, fiery, night-strong and "A royal Rasi". Sl. 21-21.5 describes Kumbh as "a man holding a pot", of medium build, "very strong in daytime", airy, head-rising, Tamasic, ruled by Shani. Both rise with the head; otherwise they are set against each other in quality (Sattva against Tamas) and in time of strength. Sl. 5-5.5 classes Dhanu as bilious and Kumbh as mixed.
A Sagittarius Moon is in Mula (four padas), Purva Ashadha (four) or the first pada of Uttara Ashadha. An Aquarius Moon is in the last two padas of Dhanishta, all four of Shatabhisha or the first three of Purva Bhadrapada.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Sagittarius first | Aquarius first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 0 | 1 | Order-dependent class comparison |
| Vashya | 2 | 1 | 1 | Adjacent groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 3 | 3 | Jupiter and Saturn neutral both ways |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | 3/11 does not fail |
Graha Maitri is 3. In the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Jupiter's friends are the Sun, Moon and Mars and Saturn's are Mercury and Venus; neither lists the other as friend or enemy, so each is neutral. Neutral-neutral scores 3, a value set in October 2026 where four web references agreed. Bhakoot is a full 7: Aquarius is the 3rd sign from Sagittarius and Sagittarius the 11th from Aquarius, and the engine zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 (a rule from two agreeing references, not from the books in this library).
Varna depends on order. The engine gives the point when the first-entered value is not lower than the second; for this pair that is true with Aquarius first and false with Sagittarius first. Every total on the page therefore shifts by one with the order, which the engine's header lists as unresolved. Varna is used only as the koota's name. Vashya is 1, the value for adjacent groups.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
Tara is 1.5 in all 81 pairings, and Yoni is 2 in all 81: Sagittarius's Dog, Monkey and Mongoose against Aquarius's Lion and Horse produce neither a match nor one of the engine's enemy pairs. With the sign kootas that fixes 14.5 points (Sagittarius first) in every pairing.
Gana is 6 in 39 pairings and 3 in 42; there is no 0, since a zero needs a Deva star and both signs lack one. Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha are Rakshasa; the Ashadhas and Purva Bhadrapada are Manushya. Same type gives 6, a Rakshasa-Manushya crossing gives 3.
Nadi is 8 in 45 pairings and 0 in 36. Mula is Aadi in the engine's table, and so are Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada - seven of Aquarius's nine padas. A Mula Moon therefore loses Nadi against most Aquarius Moons, which accounts for 28 of the 36 zeroes. The other 8 come from Purva Ashadha with Dhanishta, both Madhya.
The range of totals
With Sagittarius first, the engine's totals run from 17.5 to 28.5 out of 36, median 25.5. With Aquarius first: 18.5 to 29.5, median 26.5. Because 14.5 points are fixed, every total is 14.5 plus a Gana of 3 or 6 plus a Nadi of 0 or 8 - only four values are possible: 17.5, 20.5, 25.5 and 28.5.
The floor of 17.5 is Nadi lost with Gana at 3: a Mula Moon with a Purva Bhadrapada Moon, or Purva Ashadha with Dhanishta. The ceiling of 28.5 is Nadi kept with Gana at 6: Mula with Dhanishta (both Rakshasa, Aadi against Madhya), or either Ashadha with Purva Bhadrapada (both Manushya, different Nadi). The median, 25.5, is the common case of Nadi kept with Gana at 3.
A Mula Moon facing Shatabhisha is the odd one: both Rakshasa, so Gana is full, but both Aadi, so Nadi is lost - 20.5. Mula Moons, in short, do well only against Dhanishta, while Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha Moons do well against almost everything in Aquarius.
The single Sagittarius pada of Uttara Ashadha is the most consistent of all. It is Antya, and no Aquarius star is, so it always keeps the 8 on Nadi; it is Manushya, so it scores 6 against Purva Bhadrapada and 3 against the two Rakshasa stars. A Moon there never falls below the median of 25.5 against an Aquarius Moon. It is, however, the rarest Sagittarius placement, covering just one of the nine padas.
That makes the Sagittarius Moon's star the main question for this pair. The nakshatra calculator finds it from a birth time, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how stars and signs fit together.
Worked example: Sagittarius 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree
At 1 degree, the Sagittarius Moon is in Mula and the Aquarius Moon in Dhanishta. Sagittarius entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: first value lower |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: one direction favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Dog and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 3 | 5 | Sign: Jupiter and Saturn, neutral |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa and Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 3/11 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi and Madhya |
| Total | 28.5 | 36 |
The example is the best result this pair can produce. Both variable kootas are full; everything short of 36 is fixed - Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri, Tara and Yoni together leave 7.5 points on the table that no choice of stars can collect.
Tara by hand: the engine counts inclusively from one star to the other, both ways, treating a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9 as unfavourable. Mula to Dhanishta is 5, which fails; back from Dhanishta to Mula is 24, remainder 6, which passes. Hence 1.5 - and every other pairing of these two signs splits the same way.
Move the Aquarius Moon a few degrees into Shatabhisha and the same Mula Moon now shares the Aadi Nadi: the total falls from 28.5 to 20.5 without either Moon leaving its sign.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign descriptions and the friendship lists that the engine uses for Graha Maitri. It contains no Ashtakoot rule, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology - each was searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni. None comments on Sagittarius with Aquarius as a match.
What a score does not tell you
Four possible totals do not describe four kinds of couple; they describe one rule set meeting two signs. This app gives no verdict on marriage. Mars placement is a separate traditional check, discussed in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the same-Nadi rule, and the love compatibility calculator offers a lighter comparison.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Sagittarius Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
- From 17.5 to 28.5 out of 36 with Sagittarius entered first (median 25.5), and 18.5 to 29.5 with Aquarius first (median 26.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why can Gana never be 0 for this pair?
- A Gana of 0 requires a Deva star facing a Rakshasa star. Neither Sagittarius nor Aquarius contains a Deva star in the engine's list, so Gana is always 3 or 6.
- Why do Mula Moons often score lower here?
- Mula is Aadi in the engine's Nadi table, and so are Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. Same Nadi scores 0 on the 8-point koota.
- Why are there only four possible totals?
- Six of the eight kootas come out the same in every pairing of these two signs. Only Gana (3 or 6) and Nadi (0 or 8) vary, which gives four combinations.
- Are Jupiter and Saturn friends?
- Neither friend nor enemy in the engine's table from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 - both are neutral, which scores 3 of 5.
- How do we get our real score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool. Your stars decide Gana and Nadi.
