In short

This app scores a Scorpio Moon with a Capricorn Moon from 12.5 to 26.5 out of 36, median 23.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Scorpio entered first, a point higher with Capricorn first. Bhakoot keeps its 7 at the 3/11 distance; Graha Maitri is 1 because Saturn lists Mars as an enemy; Tara and Yoni never vary.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars and Capricorn by Saturn, two grahas the classical friendship table keeps at arm's length. In Ashtakoot matching that costs this pair most of Graha Maitri. But the two signs sit three apart, a distance Bhakoot does not penalise, and the nakshatras of the pair are oddly uniform: Tara and Yoni come out the same in every one of the 81 pairings. So the whole spread of totals rests on just two kootas, Gana and Nadi, and this page can show exactly how.

Sign pages: Scorpio, Vrishchika rashi and Capricorn, Makara rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the kootas; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.

Vrischik and Makar, and Mars exalted

BPHS Ch. 4 gives Vrischik a slender, "very sharp (or passionate)" character, strong by day and ruled by Mangal. Makar (Sl. 19-20) is "lorded by Sani", of Tamo-Gun, earthy, strong at night, with a large body; its first half is quadruped and its second "footless, moving in water". There is one classical link between them the engine does not use: Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 names Makar as the sign of Mars's exaltation. Scorpio's lord is therefore at its strongest in Capricorn - a matter of graha dignity, separate from matching.

A Scorpio Moon is in the last pada of Vishakha, or in Anuradha or Jyeshtha (four each). A Capricorn Moon is in Uttara Ashadha (three padas), Shravana (four) or Dhanishta (two). All 81 combinations follow.

The kootas this sign pair fixes

Fixed for all 81 pairings (engine-facts.mjs scorpio-and-capricorn-moon-sign-compatibility, run 2026-10-14; Capricorn-first column from a scratch run the same day).

Graha Maitri scores 1. In the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Saturn's enemies are Mars, the Sun and the Moon, while Mars's only enemy is Mercury and it treats Saturn as neutral. Neutral against hostile is scored 1; the engine notes that its references disagree on that cell (0.5 in one, 1 in another) and kept its existing value.

Bhakoot is full: Capricorn is the 3rd sign from Scorpio and Scorpio the 11th from Capricorn, and the engine zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, following two web references that agree. Varna is order-dependent: the engine awards it when the first-entered value is not lower than the second, which here means Capricorn first (1) rather than Scorpio first (0). The header calls this unresolved. Varna is the koota's technical name only.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

Two of them are settled. Tara is 1.5 in all 81 pairings - always exactly one favourable direction. Yoni is 2 in all 81: Scorpio's Tiger and Deer meet Capricorn's Mongoose, Monkey and Lion, with no match and none of the engine's enemy pairs. With the sign kootas, that fixes 12.5 points (Scorpio first) before Gana and Nadi are considered.

Gana splits three ways. Vishakha and Jyeshtha are Rakshasa and Anuradha is Deva; on the Capricorn side Uttara Ashadha is Manushya, Shravana Deva and Dhanishta Rakshasa. Like with like - Anuradha with Shravana, or Vishakha or Jyeshtha with Dhanishta - scores 6 (26 pairings). Deva against Rakshasa scores 0 (28). Anything against Uttara Ashadha scores 3 (27).

Nadi is 8 in 66 pairings. It is lost when the Scorpio pada of Vishakha (Antya) meets Uttara Ashadha or Shravana (both Antya), or when Anuradha (Madhya) meets Dhanishta (Madhya) - 15 pairings. Jyeshtha, which is Aadi, never shares a Nadi with a Capricorn star.

The range of totals

With Scorpio first, the engine's totals run from 12.5 to 26.5 out of 36, median 23.5. With Capricorn first: 13.5 to 27.5, median 24.5. Because everything except Gana and Nadi is fixed, each total is simply 12.5 (or 13.5) plus a Gana of 0, 3 or 6 plus a Nadi of 0 or 8.

That makes the extremes easy to identify. The floor is any pairing that loses both: Anuradha with Dhanishta (same Madhya Nadi, Deva against Rakshasa), or the Vishakha pada with Shravana (same Antya Nadi, Rakshasa against Deva). The ceiling needs Gana 6 with Nadi 8: Anuradha with Shravana, or Jyeshtha with Dhanishta. The median of 23.5 is the common middle case, Gana 3 with Nadi intact - any Scorpio Moon except Vishakha facing an Uttara Ashadha Moon, for instance.

Jyeshtha stands out as the steadiest Scorpio star here. With its Aadi Nadi it never loses the 8, so a Jyeshtha Moon scores between 20.5 and 26.5 against any Capricorn Moon (Scorpio first), depending only on Gana. Anuradha is the most variable: it can reach the ceiling with Shravana or fall to the floor with Dhanishta.

Shravana, the longest Capricorn star in this sign, is the one that most divides the Scorpio Moons. As a Deva star it matches Anuradha on Gana and clashes with both Rakshasa stars; as an Antya star it shares a Nadi only with the Vishakha pada. So a Shravana Moon gives the best possible result with an Anuradha Moon and the worst possible result with a Moon in the Scorpio pada of Vishakha - the two ends of the range, from the same Capricorn star.

All of this depends on knowing the stars. The nakshatra calculator gives yours from a birth time, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains the two layers.

Worked example: Scorpio 1 degree with Capricorn 1 degree

At 1 degree, the Scorpio Moon is in Vishakha and the Capricorn Moon in Uttara Ashadha. Scorpio entered first:

KootaScoreOut ofWhat decided it

Total15.536
ashtakoot() for Scorpio 1 deg with Capricorn 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Capricorn first: 16.5.

The 15.5 is the fixed 12.5 plus Gana 3 and nothing on Nadi. It is eight points under the median, and the whole difference is the shared Antya Nadi that the narrow Vishakha slice of Scorpio has with Uttara Ashadha. The engine marks it "traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly".

Tara by hand: counting inclusively from Vishakha to Uttara Ashadha gives 6, remainder 6, which passes; back from Uttara Ashadha to Vishakha gives 23, remainder 5, which the engine treats as unfavourable. One direction out of two gives 1.5. Move the Scorpio Moon a few degrees on into Anuradha and Nadi becomes 8 - the total rises to the median.

What the classical texts say

BPHS supplies the sign descriptions, the exaltation of Mars in Makar, and the friendship lists behind Graha Maitri. It does not contain Ashtakoot. Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology were also searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni without finding a matching rule, and none addresses Scorpio with Capricorn.

What a score does not tell you

A Graha Maitri of 1 records how two planets are listed in a classical table; it is not a reading of two people. This app does not give verdicts on marriage. Mars rules Scorpio, but Mangal dosha is a separate check on where Mars sits in each chart - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha explains the same-Nadi rule, and the love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Scorpio Moon and a Capricorn Moon?
From 12.5 to 26.5 out of 36 with Scorpio entered first (median 23.5), and 13.5 to 27.5 with Capricorn first (median 24.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Why is Graha Maitri only 1?
Saturn lists Mars as an enemy in the engine's table from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, while Mars is neutral to Saturn. That combination scores 1 of 5.
Does Mars being exalted in Capricorn raise the score?
No. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 names Makar as Mars's exaltation, but the engine's Graha Maitri reads only the natural friendship of the two sign lords.
Is Bhakoot dosha present for Scorpio and Capricorn?
No. The signs are 3 and 11 apart, and the engine zeroes Bhakoot only at 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8. It is 7 in every pairing.
Which kootas vary for this pair?
Only Gana and Nadi. The sign kootas are fixed, and Tara (1.5) and Yoni (2) come out the same in all 81 pairings.
How do we get our real score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool. Your two stars decide Gana and Nadi, and with them the total.
