In short
With Scorpio entered first, this app scores a Scorpio-Sagittarius pair from 12 to 23 out of 36, median 15, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; Sagittarius first adds one point throughout. Graha Maitri is full because Mars and Jupiter are mutual friends, but as neighbouring signs they lose Bhakoot at 2/12.
Scorpio and Sagittarius stand side by side in the zodiac, and their lords, Mars and Jupiter, are among the closest friends in the classical friendship table. In Guna Milan that friendship earns full marks on Graha Maitri, and almost nothing else on the sign side goes their way. The neighbouring-sign distance removes Bhakoot, Vashya is at its minimum, and Varna depends on who is entered first. Then two of Scorpio's stars meet a Sagittarius star whose animal is their natural enemy. The result is a low median with a long upper tail.
Sign pages: Scorpio, Vrishchika rashi and Sagittarius, Dhanu rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the system; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Vrischik and Dhanu in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 describes Vrischik as slender, a centipede sign that "resides in holes", strong in daytime, "very sharp (or passionate)" and ruled by Mangal. Dhanu, in Sl. 17-18.5, "rises with its head", is lorded by Guru, Sattvic, fiery and "A royal Rasi", strong at night, half biped and half quadruped, and "splendourous". The text gives them opposite strengths (day against night) and different elements, water-and-land against fire. Sl. 5-5.5 classes Vrischik with the phlegmatic signs and Dhanu with the bilious.
A Scorpio Moon is in the last pada of Vishakha, or in Anuradha or Jyeshtha (four padas each). A Sagittarius Moon is in Mula or Purva Ashadha (four each) or the first pada of Uttara Ashadha. Those nine-by-nine combinations are the 81 pairings below.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Scorpio first | Sagittarius first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 0 | 1 | Order-dependent class comparison |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | 0.5 | Groups two apart |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | 5 | Mars and Jupiter list each other as friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | Sagittarius is 2nd from Scorpio; Scorpio is 12th from Sagittarius |
Graha Maitri: in the engine's lists, taken from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Mars's friends are the Sun, Moon and Jupiter and Jupiter's friends are the Sun, Moon and Mars. Each lord names the other, which is the mutual friendship that scores 5.
Bhakoot is 0 because Sagittarius is the 2nd sign from Scorpio and Scorpio the 12th from Sagittarius. The engine zeroes 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, a rule from two agreeing web references; no book in this library contains a Bhakoot rule. Bhakoot dosha explains the label.
Vashya gives the engine's lowest value, 0.5, because the signs sit two groups apart in its table. Varna gives its point only when the first-entered class value is not lower than the second - here that means Sagittarius first. With Scorpio first it is 0. The engine's header flags this order dependence as unresolved; the name is the koota's technical term only.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
Yoni is the distinctive feature of this pair. Anuradha and Jyeshtha are both the Deer in the engine's table, and Mula is the Dog, which the engine lists as the Deer's natural enemy. Any Anuradha or Jyeshtha Moon facing a Mula Moon scores 0 on Yoni - 32 of the 81 pairings. The rest score 2.
Nadi is 0 in 33 pairings and 8 in 48. Each Scorpio star has a Sagittarius partner with the same Nadi: Jyeshtha and Mula are both Aadi, Anuradha and Purva Ashadha both Madhya, Vishakha and Uttara Ashadha both Antya. Gana gives 6 in 20 pairings (Rakshasa with Rakshasa, a Vishakha or Jyeshtha Moon with Mula), 0 in 16 (Anuradha, which is Deva, with Mula) and 3 in 45. Tara gives 1.5 in 65 pairings and 3 in 16.
The range of totals
With Scorpio first, the engine's 81 totals run from 12 to 23 out of 36, median 15. With Sagittarius first: 13 to 24, median 16. The sign kootas fix 5.5 (or 6.5), so the rest of each total is nakshatra points.
Mula is the star that shapes the distribution. Against Mula, Jyeshtha wins Gana (both Rakshasa) but loses Nadi and Yoni; Anuradha keeps Nadi but loses Gana and Yoni; only Vishakha, with its single pada, avoids the Yoni enmity and takes Gana and Nadi too. Purva Ashadha is milder - a Manushya star with the Monkey as its animal - but it shares Anuradha's Madhya Nadi.
The floor of 12, with Scorpio first, is an Anuradha Moon with a Purva Ashadha Moon: same Nadi (0), Deva with Manushya (3), Deer with Monkey (2), and Tara 1.5. The ceiling of 23 is the worked example below. The median of 15 sits close to the floor because so many pairings lose either Yoni or Nadi, and a sizeable share lose both.
Which case applies to a couple turns on their stars, so a birth time matters here. The nakshatra calculator gives the star; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the two layers.
Worked example: Scorpio 1 degree with Sagittarius 1 degree
At 1 degree, the Scorpio Moon is in Vishakha and the Sagittarius Moon in Mula. Scorpio entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: first value lower |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups two apart |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: one direction favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Tiger and Dog |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Mars and Jupiter, mutual friends |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa and Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 2/12 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya and Aadi |
| Total | 23 | 36 |
The standard example happens to be the best pairing this sign pair offers, which makes it a misleading guide to the typical case: the median is eight points lower. Vishakha escapes the Deer-Dog enmity because its animal is the Tiger, and it shares neither Nadi nor a Deva-Rakshasa split with Mula.
On Tara, the engine counts from one star to the other inclusively, both ways, and a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9 is unfavourable. Vishakha to Mula is 4, which passes; Mula back to Vishakha is 25, remainder 7, which fails. One direction gives 1.5.
Move the Scorpio Moon into Jyeshtha, a little later in the sign, and the same Mula Moon now shares its Aadi Nadi and is its Yoni enemy. Gana stays at 6 and Tara actually improves to 3 (Jyeshtha and Mula are consecutive stars, counts of 2 and 27, both favourable), but Nadi and Yoni together cost ten points and the total falls from 23 to 14.5. The signs have not changed; the stars have.
What the classical texts say
BPHS describes Vrischik and Dhanu and gives the friendship lists the engine uses for Graha Maitri. It contains no Ashtakoot rule, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology, each searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni. Nothing in the corpus addresses Scorpio with Sagittarius as a match.
What a score does not tell you
A Yoni of 0 is a line in a table of animals; it says nothing about two people. This app does not give verdicts on marriage. Mars, the lord of Scorpio, is also the planet of Mangal dosha, but that check is separate and looks at where Mars sits in each chart - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha explains the same-Nadi rule, and the love compatibility calculator offers a different comparison.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Scorpio Moon and a Sagittarius Moon?
- From 12 to 23 out of 36 with Scorpio entered first (median 15), and 13 to 24 with Sagittarius first (median 16), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Mars and Jupiter are friends - why is the score low?
- Graha Maitri is full at 5, but Bhakoot is 0 at the 2/12 distance, Vashya is 0.5, and Yoni is 0 whenever a Deer star (Anuradha, Jyeshtha) meets Mula (the Dog).
- Why does entering Sagittarius first add a point?
- The engine's Varna koota compares the first person's class value with the second's. It scores 1 with Sagittarius first and 0 with Scorpio first. The header lists this as unresolved.
- What is the Deer-Dog rule in Yoni?
- The engine assigns each nakshatra an animal and lists seven pairs of natural enemies (Cat and Rat, Lion and Elephant, Cow and Tiger, Horse and Buffalo, Dog and Deer, Monkey and Sheep, Serpent and Mongoose). Anuradha and Jyeshtha are the Deer and Mula is the Dog, so those pairings score 0 of 4 on Yoni. The animal labels are technical, not descriptions of people.
- Which star pairing scores best?
- Vishakha with Mula, at 23 with Scorpio first: same Gana, different Nadi, no Yoni enmity.
- How do we get our actual score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool. The two stars decide most of the total for this pair.
