In short
A Taurus Moon with a Scorpio Moon scores between 18 and 29 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, median 26, with Taurus entered first; Scorpio first lowers each pairing by one Varna point. The opposite signs keep the full 7 for Bhakoot, and Venus and Mars, neutral to each other, give 3 of 5 for Graha Maitri.
Taurus and Scorpio sit opposite each other, and they are the two ends of the Moon's own dignity axis in BPHS: the Moon is exalted in one and debilitated in the other. A reader might expect that to matter in a Moon-based match. In Ashtakoot it does not, because the system never looks at dignity. What it does see is a 1/7 sign distance, which keeps Bhakoot, and that is a large part of why this pair has the highest median of any Taurus cross-sign pair except Aquarius.
The sign pages are Taurus, Vrishabha rashi and Scorpio, Vrishchika rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains all eight kootas and links every pair, and the Kundli matching calculator gives the real score for two birth charts.
Vrishabh and Vrischik in BPHS
Both signs are fixed (BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5). Vrishabh (Sl. 8) is earthy, white, a quadruped of the South, ruled by Shukr and associated with villages and businessmen. Vrischik, described in an unnumbered passage after Sl. 16.5, is slender, a centipede sign that "resides in holes", faces North, resorts to water and land, "denotes Brahmins", and is ruled by Mangal. Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 places the Moon's exaltation in Vrishabh and its debilitation in the seventh sign from there, Vrischik. That is the classical meaning of this axis for the Moon; for Ashtakoot it is simply a pair of signs seven apart.
A Taurus Moon falls in Krittika padas 2-4, Rohini or Mrigashira padas 1-2. A Scorpio Moon falls in Vishakha pada 4, Anuradha or Jyeshtha. That gives 81 pairings.
The sign kootas and their score
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Taurus first, Scorpio second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 1 (0 if Scorpio is first) | Vaishya and Brahmin values compared in entry order |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 0.5 | Vashya groups two steps apart |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 3 | Venus and Mars are neutral to each other |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 7 | Distance 7 both ways |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 | The same in all 81 pairings |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 | The same in all 81 pairings |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
The signs fix 11.5 of 15 points with Taurus first and 10.5 with Scorpio first. Across the 81 pairings the total runs 18 to 29 out of 36 (median 26) in the first order and 17 to 28 (median 25) in the second. Two nakshatra kootas, Tara and Yoni, never move for this pair, so the whole 11-point spread comes from Gana and Nadi.
The pattern mirrors the other Venus-Mars opposition in the zodiac, Aries with Libra. There too the lords are neutral to each other and the signs are 1/7 apart, and the engine gives a median of 25.5 with Aries first. The two oppositions differ mainly in Varna, which passes here with Taurus first but fails with Aries first, and in Vashya, which is 0.5 here against 1 there. The sign halves end up within a point of each other, and so do the medians.
Bhakoot: opposition keeps all seven
Counting inclusively, Scorpio is the 7th sign from Taurus and Taurus the 7th from Scorpio. The engine's Bhakoot rule zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so this 1/7 pair keeps the full 7 in every pairing. The rule comes from two web references named in the engine's header; this library's books do not contain it.
Graha Maitri: neutral lords, and a recent change
In the engine's reading of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Venus's friends are Mercury and Saturn and its enemies the Sun and Moon; Mars's friends are the Sun, Moon and Jupiter and its enemy Mercury. Neither appears on the other's lists, so both are neutral. The Graha Maitri value for a neutral pair was raised from 1 to 3 in October 2026, when the engine's four references were found to agree. Every pairing on this page gained two points from that change.
Varna and Vashya
The engine's Varna table gives Vrishabh the Vaishya value and Vrischik, which BPHS says "denotes Brahmins", the Brahmin value. The engine's comparison passes when the first entry's value is at least the second's: Taurus first, 1; Scorpio first, 0. Its header leaves the order question open. Varna is used only as a koota name. Vashya groups Taurus with Aries and Sagittarius and Scorpio with Cancer and Pisces, two apart, for 0.5.
The nakshatras: Gana and Nadi do all the work
Tara is 1.5 for every pairing: the star count is favourable in one direction only. Yoni is 2 for every pairing: the Scorpio stars are a Tiger and two Deer, none of which matches or opposes the Sheep and Serpents of Taurus. That leaves two kootas to decide where a couple lands in the range.
On the Nadi side, Vishakha is Antya, Anuradha Madhya and Jyeshtha Aadi. Krittika and Rohini (both Antya) clash only with Vishakha, which covers just one pada of Scorpio, and Mrigashira (Madhya) clashes only with Anuradha. So most pairings keep Nadi's 8, which is the main reason the median sits as high as 26. For Gana, Vishakha and Jyeshtha are Rakshasa and Anuradha Deva; Krittika (Rakshasa) scores 6 with the first two and 0 with Anuradha. These are technical categories for stars, not judgements on anyone.
At pada midpoints, the engine's lowest pairing is a Taurus Moon in Rohini (about 11 degrees) with a Scorpio Moon in Vishakha (about 1.5 degrees): Gana 3, Nadi 0, total 18. The highest is a Taurus Moon in Krittika (about 8 degrees) with a Scorpio Moon in Jyeshtha (about 28 degrees): Gana 6, Nadi 8, total 29. Because Vishakha is only one pada of Scorpio, the low end of the range is uncommon among the 81 combinations.
All of this depends on the exact star, so the nakshatra calculator is the place to start; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the relationship.
Worked example: Taurus 1 degree with Scorpio 1 degree
At 1 degree of Taurus the Moon is in Krittika, second pada. At 1 degree of Scorpio it is in Vishakha, fourth pada, the only quarter of Vishakha in Scorpio. Taurus entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Vaishya first, Brahmin second |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups two apart |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Sheep and Tiger |
| Graha Maitri | 3 | 5 | Sign: Venus and Mars, neutral both ways |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: both Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 1/7 distance |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Antya |
| Total | 21 | 36 |
The example happens to fall in the one Scorpio pada that clashes with Krittika's Nadi, so it sits five points under the median. Move the Scorpio Moon a few degrees on, into Anuradha, and Nadi would recover its 8, though Gana would then fall to 0 for Rakshasa against Deva. It is an illustration of how often, in this system, one star change moves two kootas in opposite directions.
A total of 21 or 29 describes two Moon placements under one rule set and does not describe two people. Nadi dosha explains the Nadi 0 without alarm, and Mangal dosha: what it is and is not covers the separate Mars check, which has nothing to do with Scorpio being a Mars sign.
What the texts in this library say
BPHS supplies the sign descriptions, the Moon's exaltation and debilitation, and the Venus-Mars relationship. It does not contain Ashtakoot, and nor do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of these books comments on Taurus and Scorpio Moons as partners. The scoring on this page is the engine's.

- What do Taurus and Scorpio Moons score in Guna Milan?
- From 18 to 29 out of 36 with Taurus entered first (median 26), and from 17 to 28 with Scorpio first (median 25), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- The Moon is debilitated in Scorpio. Does that lower the score?
- No. Ashtakoot does not use dignity. It uses the two Moon signs, their lords and the nakshatras.
- Do opposite Moon signs lose Bhakoot?
- Not in this engine. A 1/7 distance is not one of the 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 distances it scores 0.
- Which koota decides most Taurus-Scorpio results?
- Nadi and Gana, since Tara and Yoni never vary for this pair. The match tool shows both from birth details.
- Is a high score a promise?
- No. It is a traditional rule set applied to two Moon positions. This app gives no verdict on whether two people should marry.
