Aries and Scorpio Moons score 11.5 to 24 out of 36 in this app's Ashtakoot engine with Aries first (10.5 to 23 with Scorpio first). Both signs belong to Mars, so Graha Maitri is full, but the 6/8 distance takes all of Bhakoot. Koota by koota, with a worked example.

In short

An Aries Moon with a Scorpio Moon scores between 11.5 and 24 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, median 18, with Aries entered first; Scorpio first lowers each pairing by one Varna point. Both signs are ruled by Mars, so Graha Maitri is a full 5, but they sit 6 and 8 apart, so Bhakoot is 0.

Aries and Scorpio are the two signs Mars rules. That shared lord should, one might think, make for an easy match, and in one koota it does: Graha Maitri cannot be higher. But Guna Milan also counts the distance between the Moon signs, and Scorpio is the 8th sign from Aries. Under the engine's Bhakoot rule that distance costs the full 7 points, more than the shared lord gains. The pair is a clear illustration of how the kootas can pull against each other.

The signs are described on Aries, Mesha rashi and Scorpio, Vrishchika rashi. For the koota system as a whole, use the nakshatra matching hub; for a real score from two charts, the Kundli matching calculator.

Two Mars signs in BPHS

BPHS Ch. 4 gives Mars two very different homes. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is a movable, fiery quadruped that resides in the East, wanders in hills and is "related to kings". Vrischik, described in an unnumbered passage after Sl. 16.5, is a fixed sign with "a slender physique", a centipede sign that "resides in holes", faces North, resorts to water and land, and "denotes Brahmins". Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 makes Mesh the sign of Mars's moolatrikona. Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 makes Vrischik the Moon's debilitation, being the seventh from its exaltation in Vrishabh. That fact concerns a planet's placement, not a matching rule, and the engine does not use it.

A Scorpio Moon falls in Vishakha pada 4, Anuradha (four padas) or Jyeshtha (four padas). The Aries Moon falls in Ashwini, Bharani or Krittika pada 1. That gives the 81 pairings.

The signs give 6.5 of 15 with Aries first and 5.5 with Scorpio first. Across the 81 pairings the total is 11.5 to 24 out of 36 (median 18) in the first order, 10.5 to 23 (median 17) in the second. Compare two Aries Moons, which also share Mars as lord: they keep Bhakoot, start with 15 sign points, and never fall below 26.5. Same planet, same Graha Maitri, very different totals, and the whole difference lies in the count of signs between the Moons and in Vashya.

Graha Maitri: a shared lord

When both Moon signs belong to the same planet, the engine's Graha Maitri function returns 5 at once, without looking at the BPHS friendship lists. This is the only cross-sign Aries pair where that happens, since Mars rules no other sign.

Bhakoot: the 6/8 pair

Counting inclusively from Aries, Scorpio is 8th; from Scorpio, Aries is 6th. The engine's Bhakoot rule scores 0 for 6/8, as for 2/12 and 5/9, in every pairing. The rule is taken from two web references named in the engine's header; no book in this library states it. The usual name for that 0 is Bhakoot dosha, and that page explains what the term does and does not imply.

Varna and Vashya

The engine's Varna table puts Mesh at the Kshatriya value and Vrischik at the Brahmin value, following BPHS, and scores the point when the first entry is at least the second. With Aries first that holds (1); with Scorpio first it does not (0). The header records this asymmetry as unresolved. Varna is used only as the name of the koota. For Vashya, the engine groups Aries with Taurus and Sagittarius and Scorpio with Cancer and Pisces; those groups are two apart, which gives 0.5.

What the nakshatras contribute

Yoni is fixed at 2 for this pair. The Scorpio stars are a Tiger (Vishakha) and two Deer (Anuradha, Jyeshtha), and none of them is the same animal as, or a listed enemy of, the Horse, Elephant or Sheep of the Aries stars. Tara varies between 1.5 and 3. The real movement is in Gana and Nadi.

In the engine's Gana table Vishakha and Jyeshtha are Rakshasa and Anuradha is Deva. Ashwini (Deva) therefore scores 6 with Anuradha and 0 with the other two; Krittika (Rakshasa) reverses that. For Nadi, the three Scorpio stars run Antya, Madhya, Aadi, the mirror of Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, which run Aadi, Madhya, Antya. Each Aries star shares its Nadi with exactly one Scorpio star: Ashwini with Jyeshtha, Bharani with Anuradha, Krittika with Vishakha. Those three combinations lose 8.

Gana and Nadi labels are technical terms of the system, not descriptions of anyone. Which ones apply depends on the exact star, so the nakshatra calculator and Moon sign and nakshatra are worth reading before treating a sign-pair number as personal.

Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Scorpio 1 degree

At 1 degree of Aries the Moon is in Ashwini. At 1 degree of Scorpio it is in Vishakha, fourth pada, the only part of that star inside Scorpio. Aries entered first:

Total1836
ashtakoot() for Aries 1 deg with Scorpio 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Scorpio first, Varna is 0 and the total 17.

The example lands exactly on the median of 18. Its two zeros are Bhakoot and Gana, and its two full scores are Graha Maitri and Nadi. Notice that the shared lord and the 6/8 distance both come from the sign alone, so every Aries-Scorpio couple has that same pair of results; only Gana and Nadi, set by the stars, separate one couple's total from another's.

An 18 is not a verdict, and neither is a 24. The score reports how two Moon positions meet a traditional rule set. Many families also look at Mars placement in each chart, which is a separate matter and has nothing to do with both Moon signs being Mars's; Mangal dosha: what it is and is not explains it. Nadi dosha covers the Nadi 0 case.

The Vishakha boundary

Vishakha is split between two signs: its first three padas are in Libra and only its fourth is in Scorpio. A Moon a degree or two earlier than the example would still be in Vishakha but in Libra, and an Aries-Libra pair is 1/7 apart, which keeps Bhakoot's 7, while Graha Maitri would drop from 5 to 3 because Venus, not Mars, would then be the lord. For a Moon this close to a sign boundary, the birth time decides which page of this series applies at all.

What the classical texts say

BPHS describes both Mars signs and the dignities of the Moon, and it is the source of the sign classifications the engine uses. It does not describe Ashtakoot. Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology are silent on the system as well, and none comments on Aries and Scorpio Moons as a pair. The rules above are the engine's, with their web sources named in its code.

What do Aries and Scorpio Moons score in Guna Milan?
From 11.5 to 24 out of 36 with Aries entered first (median 18) and 10.5 to 23 with Scorpio first (median 17), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Both signs are ruled by Mars. Does that help?
For Graha Maitri, yes: a shared lord scores the full 5. But the signs are 6/8 apart, which costs all 7 Bhakoot points, so the net effect of the sign pair is lower than for many others.
Is Yoni the same for every Aries-Scorpio pairing?
Yes, 2 of 4 in all 81. No Aries star shares an animal with a Scorpio star, and none of the animals are listed as enemies.
How do I find our real score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool. Gana and Nadi, which carry most of the variation here, need the exact nakshatras.
Should a 6/8 Bhakoot stop a marriage?
This app does not make that judgement. The 6/8 rule comes from web references, not from the books in this library, and a score is not a verdict on two people.
