In short
An Aries Moon with a Sagittarius Moon scores between 13 and 27 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, with a median of 22.5, and the order of entry makes no difference. Varna, Vashya and Graha Maitri are all full, but Bhakoot is 0 because Sagittarius is the 9th sign from Aries.
Aries and Sagittarius are two of the three fire signs, a trine apart. Three of the four sign kootas in Ashtakoot matching come out at their maximum for this pair, which is unusual. The fourth, Bhakoot, comes out at zero, and that zero is the newest rule in this app's engine: until October 2026 it would have been a full 7. Read with that history in mind, the numbers below are less a fixed fact about the pair than a record of which published rule the engine currently follows.
The sign pages are Aries, Mesha rashi and Sagittarius, Dhanu rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains the system once and links all 78 pairs; the Kundli matching calculator scores two actual charts.
Mesh and Dhanu: two royal fire signs
BPHS Ch. 4 links these signs in several ways. Sl. 5-5.5 lists both among the bilious signs. Both are fiery, and both reside in the East. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is "related to kings"; Dhanu (Sl. 17-18.5) is called "A royal Rasi" outright. They differ in kind: Mesh is movable and a quadruped ruled by Mangal, while Dhanu is dual, ruled by Guru (Jupiter), and is "biped in first half" with a quadruped second half. That last detail lines up with the engine, which places Sagittarius in the same Vashya group as Aries.
A Sagittarius Moon falls in Mula (four padas), Purva Ashadha (four) or Uttara Ashadha pada 1. With the nine Aries quarters (Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika pada 1), that makes the 81 pairings.
The kootas the two signs fix: three full, one empty
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Aries with Sagittarius | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 1 | Both Kshatriya in the engine's table, so either order scores |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 2 | Same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 5 | Mars and Jupiter are each other's friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 0 | Sagittarius 9th from Aries, Aries 5th from Sagittarius |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 0 or 2 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
The sign kootas fix 8 of 15 points. The 81 pairings range from 13 to 27 out of 36, median 22.5, and because both signs share a Varna class, entering them in the other order changes nothing. Of the 7 points the signs give up, all 7 are Bhakoot.
It is instructive to set this beside the other fire trine from Aries. Aries with Leo is also a 5/9 pair and also has mutually friendly lords (Mars and the Sun), yet its engine range is 13.5 to 26 with a median of 23. The sign halves differ by one point: Leo sits in a neighbouring Vashya group and scores 1 there, where Sagittarius scores 2. The rest of the difference is in the stars. Leo's Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni pair differently with Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika than Mula and the two Ashadhas do, which widens this pair's range at both ends. Two sign pairs that look alike on paper can land in slightly different places once the nakshatras are counted.
Bhakoot: the trine counted as 9/5
Counting inclusively, Sagittarius is the 9th sign from Aries and Aries the 5th from Sagittarius. The engine's Bhakoot rule scores 0 for 5/9, as it does for 2/12 and 6/8. Its header comment explains that 5/9 scored 7 until October 2026 and was moved to 0 because two published web references ([A] and [B] in the code) agree on it; it also notes that no book in this library contains the Bhakoot rule at all. Some practitioners treat a trine between the Moons more leniently, and the engine does not hide that this is a choice. The 0 is usually called Bhakoot dosha.
Graha Maitri: a mutual friendship
In the engine's rendering of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Jupiter's friends are the Sun, the Moon and Mars, and Mars's friends are the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter. Each lists the other, so the Graha Maitri koota scores friend-friend, the full 5. All the engine's references agree on that value.
Varna and Vashya: no order effect
Both signs are fire, which the engine's Varna table makes Kshatriya, in line with BPHS calling both royal. Equal values score 1 whichever person is entered first, so this pair escapes the order dependence the engine's header flags for others. The Vashya koota gives 2 because both signs are in the same group. Varna here is a koota name only.
The nakshatras: where 13 and 27 come from
Fourteen points separate the best and worst pairings, and all of them come from the stars. On the Sagittarius side the engine's Gana table makes Mula Rakshasa and both Ashadhas Manushya. Ashwini (Deva) with Mula is therefore a 0, while Bharani (Manushya) with either Ashadha is a 6. The Nadi groups run Aadi (Mula), Madhya (Purva Ashadha), Antya (Uttara Ashadha) on the Sagittarius side, exactly parallel to Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika on the Aries side. So Ashwini meets its own Nadi in Mula, Bharani in Purva Ashadha, Krittika in Uttara Ashadha.
Yoni can also cost points here. Purva Ashadha is a Monkey in the engine's table and Krittika a Sheep, a listed enemy pair, so that combination scores 0 for Yoni. Everything else gives 2. None of these labels describes a person; they are the system's categories for stars.
Finding the star means knowing the birth time; the nakshatra calculator does it, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains the two layers.
Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Sagittarius 1 degree
At 1 degree of Aries the Moon is in Ashwini; at 1 degree of Sagittarius it is in Mula. Both are the opening stars of their signs, and this example happens to be the pair's lowest result:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: both Kshatriya |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same group |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable both ways |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Horse and Dog |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Mars and Jupiter, mutual friends |
| Gana | 0 | 6 | Nakshatra: Ashwini Deva, Mula Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 9/5 distance |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Aadi |
| Total | 13 | 36 |
Three zeros make the 13: Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, worth 21 points between them. Meanwhile Tara, Varna, Vashya and Graha Maitri are all full. The example is a good illustration of why a single total can mislead. The same 13 contains the strongest possible planetary friendship and the weakest possible star groupings, and someone reading only the number would see neither.
It also shows the size of the October 2026 Bhakoot change. Under the earlier rule the same two Moons would have scored 20, and the pair's whole range would have sat seven points higher. Nothing about the two Moons changed; the rule did. That is a good reason to read any published Guna Milan number together with the rule set that produced it.
None of this is a verdict on two people. Nadi dosha and Mangal dosha: what it is and is not cover the two checks most often raised alongside the score.
What the texts say about this pairing
BPHS provides the descriptions of Mesh and Dhanu and the Mars-Jupiter friendship. It does not contain Ashtakoot, and nor do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology in this app's library. None of them comments on Aries with Sagittarius as a marriage pairing. The 5/9 Bhakoot rule that sets this pair's ceiling is from web references, which the engine names.
Compare the other fire pair, Aries and Leo, which is also 5/9; Aries and Capricorn; and Sagittarius and Sagittarius. The love compatibility calculator gives a non-koota comparison.
- What is the Guna Milan range for Aries and Sagittarius Moons?
- From 13 to 27 out of 36, median 22.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app. The order of entry does not change it.
- Why is Bhakoot 0 for a trine?
- The engine scores the 5/9 distance 0, following two web references it names. Before October 2026 it scored 7; sources disagree, and no book in this library contains the rule.
- Are Mars and Jupiter friends?
- Yes, each lists the other as a friend in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 as the engine uses it, so Graha Maitri is the full 5.
- What would raise our score above the minimum?
- Different nakshatras: Gana and Nadi alone can add 14 points. The match tool computes your exact stars from birth details.
- Is the score a judgement on our relationship?
- No. It applies one traditional rule set to two Moon positions. This app gives no verdict on whether two people should marry.
