Aries and Capricorn Moons score 11.5 to 27.5 out of 36 in this app's Ashtakoot engine with Aries first (12.5 to 28.5 with Capricorn first). The 4/10 square keeps Bhakoot; Saturn's view of Mars holds Graha Maitri to 1. Every koota, with a worked example.

In short

An Aries Moon with a Capricorn Moon scores between 11.5 and 27.5 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, median 23, with Aries entered first; Capricorn first adds a Varna point throughout. Bhakoot is a full 7 at the 4/10 distance, but Graha Maitri is 1 because Saturn counts Mars as an enemy.

An Aries Moon and a Capricorn Moon have one thing in common in the classical texts: Mars. It rules the first sign and is exalted in the second. But Guna Milan does not look at exaltation; it looks at the sign lords, and Capricorn's lord is Saturn, which counts Mars as an enemy. So this pair scores poorly on planetary friendship and well on sign distance, and finishes with a median that is respectable for an Aries match. This page shows the arithmetic and where the uncertainty is.

The signs are covered on Aries, Mesha rashi and Capricorn, Makara rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains all eight kootas and links the rest of the series, and the Kundli matching calculator produces the real score for two charts.

Mesh and Makar in the texts

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5 makes both signs movable, the first and tenth of the zodiac, and sorts Mesh among the bilious signs and Makar among the windy. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is fiery, a quadruped of the hills, ruled by Mangal. Makar (Sl. 19-20) is earthy, lorded by Shani (Saturn), predominantly Tamasic in the text's scheme, faces south, and is a composite creature whose first half is quadruped and whose second half is "footless, moving in water". Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Mars its exaltation in Makar, deepest at 28 degrees. That is a statement about Mars as a placed planet; it plays no role in the koota arithmetic and does not make a Capricorn Moon partner "good for" an Aries Moon.

One more classical detail affects the engine. BPHS names a social class for nine signs, and Makar is one of the three it leaves out. The engine's header says Makar takes the value of its element, earth, which is Vaishya.

A Capricorn Moon falls in Uttara Ashadha padas 2-4, Shravana (four padas) or Dhanishta padas 1-2. With Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika pada 1 on the Aries side, that is 81 pairings.

The signs fix 8.5 of 15 points with Aries first, 9.5 with Capricorn first. Across the 81 pairings the total runs 11.5 to 27.5 out of 36 (median 23) in the first order and 12.5 to 28.5 (median 24) in the second. Bhakoot supplies 7 of those sign points by itself; the other three sign kootas together supply only 1.5 or 2.5.

That makes this one of the widest ranges among Aries pairs, 16 points from floor to ceiling. The reason is that both the heaviest nakshatra kootas move freely here: Gana takes all three of its possible values (0, 3 and 6), Nadi takes 0 or 8, and Yoni can drop to 0. A pairing where all three go well lands near the top; one where they all fail lands near the bottom; the median, at 23, is closer to the top, because complete failure is rarer.

Bhakoot: the square keeps all seven

Capricorn is the 10th sign from Aries, and Aries the 4th from Capricorn. The engine's Bhakoot rule zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so this 4/10 pair keeps the full 7 in every combination. The list comes from two web references named in the engine's header; this library's books do not contain Bhakoot.

Graha Maitri: Saturn's enmity

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, as the engine lists it, gives Saturn three natural enemies: Mars, the Sun and the Moon. Mars, for its part, neither befriends nor opposes Saturn, so it is neutral. A neutral-enemy pair is one where the engine's web references disagree (0.5 in one, 1 in another), and the engine keeps its earlier value of 1. That makes Graha Maitri the clearest weakness among the sign kootas for this pair, and the one figure on this page whose exact value is genuinely unsettled among sources.

Varna and Vashya

The engine scores Varna 1 when the first entry's class value is at least the second's. Kshatriya (Aries) first against Vaishya (Capricorn) fails; the reverse passes. The engine's header lists this order dependence as unresolved. The term is the koota's name and the sign classification only. Vashya puts Capricorn alone in its own group in the engine's table, far from Aries's group, so the score is 0.5.

What the nakshatras add

On the Capricorn side the engine's Gana table makes Uttara Ashadha Manushya, Shravana Deva and Dhanishta Rakshasa, so each of the three Gana types is present, as it is on the Aries side (Ashwini Deva, Bharani Manushya, Krittika Rakshasa). All three Gana scores therefore appear. Nadi groups on the Capricorn side are Antya for Uttara Ashadha and Shravana and Madhya for Dhanishta; no Capricorn star is Aadi, so an Ashwini Moon never loses Nadi in this pair, while Krittika shares Antya with two of the three stars.

Two Yoni combinations score 0: Krittika (Sheep) with Shravana (Monkey), and Bharani (Elephant) with Dhanishta (Lion), both listed as enemy pairs in the engine. All others score 2. These animal and Gana labels are categories for stars, not descriptions of people.

Since everything here depends on the star, start from the nakshatra calculator and the explanation in Moon sign and nakshatra.

Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Capricorn 1 degree

At 1 degree of Aries the Moon is in Ashwini. At 1 degree of Capricorn it is in Uttara Ashadha, second pada. Entered Aries first:

Total2336
ashtakoot() for Aries 1 deg with Capricorn 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Capricorn first, Varna becomes 1 and the total 24.

The example sits exactly on the median. Bhakoot and Nadi contribute 15 of its 23 points; Graha Maitri, Vashya and Varna contribute 1.5 between them. Put plainly, this pairing scores well because of a sign count and a star grouping, and poorly on the one koota that is about the sign lords' relationship. If the engine adopted the lower 0.5 that one reference gives for neutral-enemy, the example would drop by half a point, and so would every one of the 81 pairings.

A 23 does not describe two people, and this app does not translate it into advice. Many families also review Mars placement, which is unrelated to Mars ruling the Aries Moon; Mangal dosha: what it is and is not explains that check, and Nadi dosha covers the Nadi koota.

What the classical books here say

BPHS supplies the descriptions of Mesh and Makar, Mars's exaltation, and the friendships behind Graha Maitri. It contains no Ashtakoot rules, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of them discusses Aries and Capricorn Moons as partners. The scoring above belongs to the engine, which names its web sources for Bhakoot and Graha Maitri.

What is the Guna Milan score for Aries and Capricorn Moons?
Between 11.5 and 27.5 out of 36 with Aries entered first (median 23), and between 12.5 and 28.5 with Capricorn first (median 24), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings.
Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Does that raise the score?
No. Ashtakoot uses the lords of the two Moon signs, Mars and Saturn, and their natural relationship. Exaltation is not part of the calculation.
Why is Graha Maitri only 1?
Saturn lists Mars among its natural enemies in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, and Mars is neutral to Saturn. The engine scores that pair 1, a value its references disagree on.
Where can I see our exact koota scores?
The match tool takes both birth details and shows all eight kootas, including the order-dependent Varna.
Is the score a recommendation?
No. It is a traditional rule set applied to two Moon positions. This app does not advise whether two people should marry.
