Aries and Aquarius Moons score 13.5 to 26.5 out of 36 in this app's Ashtakoot engine with Aries first (14.5 to 27.5 with Aquarius first). The 11/3 distance keeps Bhakoot, Saturn holds Graha Maitri to 1, and a shared Horse yoni is possible. Worked example included.

In short

An Aries Moon with an Aquarius Moon scores between 13.5 and 26.5 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, median 20.5, with Aries entered first; Aquarius first adds one Varna point to each. Bhakoot is a full 7 at the 11/3 distance, Graha Maitri is 1 because Saturn counts Mars an enemy, and Tara is 1.5 in every pairing.

Aquarius is the second sign Saturn rules, and with an Aries Moon it repeats some of what Capricorn does: the same weak planetary friendship, the same full Bhakoot. The differences are in the details. The distance is 11/3 rather than 10/4, the Vashya groups sit closer, and the Aquarius nakshatras include one star that shares Ashwini's animal. In Ashtakoot terms, those details shift the range down a little and change which koota does the most work.

For the signs, see Aries, Mesha rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching hub covers the eight kootas and links every sign pair; the Kundli matching calculator computes the full score for two charts.

Mesh and Kumbh in BPHS

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 21-21.5 pictures Kumbh as "a man holding a pot": a deep-brown, medium-built biped, airy, very strong by day, resorting to deep water, rising with its head, Tamasic in the text's scheme, and ruled by Shani, whom the text calls the Sun's offspring. It "rules Sudras, the 4th Varna and the West". Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is the movable, fiery, quadruped sign of Mangal, linked with kings and the East. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Kumbh fixed and of mixed humour where Mesh is movable and bilious. Fire and air, East and West, movable and fixed: on almost every axis the text uses, the two signs differ.

An Aquarius Moon falls in Dhanishta padas 3-4, Shatabhisha (four padas) or Purva Bhadrapada padas 1-3. With the nine Aries quarters, that gives the 81 pairings.

Koota values seen across all 81 pada pairings (engine-facts.mjs aries-and-aquarius-moon-sign-compatibility, run 2026-10-14).

The signs fix 9 of 15 points with Aries first and 10 with Aquarius first. Over the 81 pairings the total runs from 13.5 to 26.5 (median 20.5) in the first order, and 14.5 to 27.5 (median 21.5) in the second. Compared with Aries and Capricorn, the sign half is half a point better here (thanks to Vashya), but the median is two and a half points lower, so the difference lies in the stars.

Bhakoot at the 11/3 distance

Aquarius is 11th from Aries counted inclusively, and Aries is 3rd from Aquarius. Neither count falls on 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8, the only distances the engine's Bhakoot rule scores 0, so all 81 pairings keep 7. The engine takes this rule from two web references; none of this library's books has it.

Graha Maitri: Mars and Saturn again

Saturn's natural enemies in the engine's version of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 are Mars, the Sun and the Moon; Mars is neutral toward Saturn. A neutral-enemy pair scores 1 for Graha Maitri, a value the engine kept because its sources disagree. The same 1 applies to every Aries pair with a Saturn sign. If the engine adopted the reference that gives 0.5 instead, every pairing on this page would lose half a point, with nothing else changing in any of the other seven kootas.

Varna and Vashya

BPHS says Kumbh "rules Sudras", and the engine's Varna table follows the text, giving Aquarius the Shudra value and Aries the Kshatriya value. Because the engine compares the first entry with the second, Aries first scores 0 and Aquarius first scores 1. Its header leaves that asymmetry open. Varna is only the koota's name. For Vashya, Aquarius sits in the group next to Aries's, so the score is 1.

The nakshatra kootas: a narrow Gana, a shared animal

Tara is fixed at 1.5 in all 81 pairings: one direction of the star count is always favourable and the other never is. That leaves Yoni, Gana and Nadi to supply the 13-point spread.

The Gana picture is lopsided. In the engine's table Dhanishta and Shatabhisha are Rakshasa and Purva Bhadrapada is Manushya; no Aquarius star is Deva. An Ashwini Moon (Deva) therefore never scores 6 for Gana in this pair: it gets 0 against the two Rakshasa stars and 3 against Purva Bhadrapada. A Krittika Moon (Rakshasa) gets the full 6 against those same two stars. These are technical labels and not judgements of anyone.

The Yoni koota has its full range here. Shatabhisha is a Horse in the engine's table, the same animal as Ashwini, so that pairing scores 4. Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada are Lions, and the Lion is listed as the enemy of the Elephant, which is Bharani's animal; Bharani with either scores 0. For Nadi, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada are Aadi and Dhanishta Madhya, so Ashwini loses Nadi against two of the three stars and Krittika (Antya) never does.

One consequence is worth spelling out. Ashwini with Shatabhisha gets the best Yoni in the pair, 4, but in the same pairing Nadi is 0 and Gana is 0. Kootas that look independent can move against each other for a single star pair. Run directly, the engine scores an Aries Moon at 1 degree against an Aquarius Moon at 12 degrees (Shatabhisha) at 14.5: Yoni 4, Gana 0, Nadi 0, with the sign rows unchanged at 9. That is six points below the worked example further down, even though the "matching animal" might sound like the better pairing. A total only makes sense when you can see which rows produced it. The nakshatra calculator gives the exact star, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains why it matters.

Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree

At 1 degree of Aries the Moon is in Ashwini; at 1 degree of Aquarius it is in Dhanishta, third pada. With Aries first:

KootaScoreOut ofWhat decided it

Yoni24Nakshatra: Horse and Lion
Graha Maitri15Sign: Mars neutral, Saturn hostile

Total20.536
ashtakoot() for Aries 1 deg with Aquarius 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Aquarius first, Varna becomes 1 and the total 21.5.

The total equals the pair's median. Bhakoot and Nadi bring 15 points; Gana brings none. The Gana zero is the most contested number in the table: the engine's header records that its sources disagree on every cross-Gana value, and one published table gives a Deva-Rakshasa pair 1 rather than 0. The engine's 6/3/0 scale stays until a choice is made, so this example's Gana row is the one most likely to read differently on another site.

A score like 20.5 is a measure of two Moon placements under one rule set, not a description of two people, and this page offers no verdict on marriage. For checks often discussed with Guna Milan, see Nadi dosha and Mangal dosha: what it is and is not.

What the texts say

BPHS describes Mesh and Kumbh and supplies the Mars-Saturn relationship. Neither it nor Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology contains Ashtakoot, and none of them treats Aries with Aquarius as a marriage question. The scoring here is the engine's, with its web sources named in the code.

What do Aries and Aquarius Moons score in Guna Milan?
From 13.5 to 26.5 out of 36 with Aries entered first (median 20.5), and from 14.5 to 27.5 with Aquarius first (median 21.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Why is Tara always 1.5 for this pair?
For every Aries star paired with every Aquarius star, the count of nakshatras is favourable in one direction and unfavourable in the other, which the engine scores 1.5.
Can Yoni be full for Aries and Aquarius?
Yes: Ashwini and Shatabhisha are both Horse in the engine's table and score 4. In that same pairing, though, Gana and Nadi both score 0.
How do I get our real result?
The match tool computes both nakshatras from birth details and shows all eight kootas.
Is a middling score a warning?
No. A Guna Milan score is one traditional rule set applied to two Moon positions. This app does not treat it as a verdict on a relationship.
