An Aries Moon and a Libra Moon score 14.5 to 28.5 out of 36 in this app's Ashtakoot engine with Aries first (15.5 to 29.5 with Libra first). Why the 1/7 opposition keeps Bhakoot, what Mars and Venus give Graha Maitri, and a worked example.

In short

An Aries Moon with a Libra Moon scores between 14.5 and 28.5 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, with a median of 25.5 when Aries is entered first; Libra first adds a Varna point to each. The opposite signs keep the full 7 for Bhakoot, and Mars and Venus, neutral to each other, give 3 of 5 for Graha Maitri.

Aries and Libra face each other across the zodiac. In much popular writing an opposition between two Moons is treated as a tension; in the arithmetic of Ashtakoot matching it is simply a count of seven, and seven is one of the distances that keeps Bhakoot whole. That is why, despite modest scores from the other sign kootas, this pair's median sits among the higher ones for an Aries Moon. The nakshatras then spread the total across 14 points.

See Aries, Mesha rashi and Libra, Tula rashi for the signs, the nakshatra matching hub for all eight kootas and the other pairs, and the Kundli matching calculator for an actual score from two charts.

East and West: Mesh and Tula in BPHS

BPHS Ch. 4 sets the two signs at opposite points in more than position. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) "resides in the East", rises with its back, is fiery and ruled by Mangal. Tula (Sl. 15-16.5) "relates to the western direction", rises with its head, is strong by day, is a biped and is ruled by Shukr (Venus). Both are movable signs (Sl. 5-5.5). Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 adds a neat symmetry: the Sun is exalted in Mesh and therefore debilitated in Tula, the seventh from it, while Saturn is exalted in Tula and debilitated in Mesh. Those dignities describe planets in signs; Ashtakoot does not use them.

The Libra Moon's nine quarters are Chitra padas 3-4, Swati (four padas) and Vishakha padas 1-3. On the Aries side they are Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika pada 1.

The signs lock in 11 of 15 with Aries first and 12 with Libra first. Across the 81 pairings the total runs from 14.5 to 28.5 (median 25.5) in the first order and 15.5 to 29.5 (median 26.5) in the second. The median sits close to the top of the range, which means most pairings do well and a minority, where Gana and Nadi both fail, pull the minimum down.

Bhakoot: the opposition scores full

Counting inclusively, Libra is the 7th sign from Aries and Aries the 7th from Libra. The engine's Bhakoot rule zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so a 1/7 pair keeps all 7 in every pairing. This list is taken from two published web references the engine names; BPHS and the other books in this library have no Bhakoot rule at all.

Graha Maitri: Mars and Venus, neither friend nor enemy

In the engine's version of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Mars befriends the Sun, Moon and Jupiter and opposes Mercury; Venus befriends Mercury and Saturn and opposes the Sun and Moon. Mars and Venus do not appear on each other's lists, so both are neutral. The Graha Maitri value for a neutral pair rose from 1 to 3 in October 2026, when the engine's four references were found to agree on 3. Before that change this pair would have scored two points lower in every combination.

Varna and Vashya

BPHS says Tula "represents Sudras, or the 4th Varna", and the engine's Varna table follows it; Mesh is Kshatriya. The engine gives the point when the first entry's class value is at least the second's, so Aries first scores 0 and Libra first 1, an order dependence its header leaves open. The term names a koota and a textual sign classification and says nothing about people. Vashya places Aries and Libra in neighbouring groups: 1 of 2.

Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi for Aries with Libra

Tara does not move for this pair: 1.5 in all 81 pairings, favourable in one direction of the star count and not the other. Yoni almost never moves either. Chitra and Vishakha are Tigers in the engine's table and score 2 against any Aries animal. Swati, however, is a Buffalo, and Buffalo is listed as the enemy of Horse, the animal of Ashwini; an Ashwini Moon with a Swati Moon therefore scores 0 for Yoni.

The real spread comes from Gana and Nadi. Two of the three Libra stars, Chitra and Vishakha, are Rakshasa in the engine's table, and Swati is Deva. Ashwini (Deva) against Chitra or Vishakha scores 0 for Gana; Krittika (Rakshasa) against the same two scores 6. For Nadi, Chitra is Madhya and Swati and Vishakha are Antya, so Bharani (Madhya) shares a Nadi with Chitra, and Krittika (Antya) with Swati and Vishakha. Gana and Nadi labels are the system's technical vocabulary.

Two of the Libra stars also straddle sign boundaries. Chitra begins in Virgo and Vishakha ends in Scorpio, so a Moon early or late in Libra can be a few hours from being a different sign altogether, which would change the Bhakoot and Graha Maitri rows as well as the nakshatra ones. Near those edges a rounded or guessed birth time is a real source of error, and it is worth checking before reading anything into the result. All of this depends on knowing the star, which needs a birth time. The nakshatra calculator finds it, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains the relationship between the two layers.

Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Libra 1 degree

The first Moon at 1 degree of Aries is in Ashwini; the second at 1 degree of Libra is in Chitra, third pada. With Aries entered first:

Total22.536
ashtakoot() for Aries 1 deg with Libra 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Libra first, Varna becomes 1 and the total 23.5.

The example is three points under the 25.5 median, and the reason is Gana: a Deva star meeting a Rakshasa one costs the full 6 under the engine's table. That table is itself one of the open questions in the engine's header, which notes that references disagree on every cross-Gana value and that the current 6/3/0 scale is kept until a choice is made. A different reference would have given this example a different total.

What a score like this does not do is describe two people or predict a marriage. The Nadi dosha and Mangal dosha pages cover the two checks most often raised alongside Guna Milan, and the love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison outside the koota system.

What the classical books here say

BPHS supplies the descriptions of Mesh and Tula and the planetary relationships behind Graha Maitri. It, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology contain no Ashtakoot rules and say nothing about Aries and Libra Moons as partners. The scoring on this page is the engine's, and where it relies on web references, as with Bhakoot and the Graha Maitri point values, the engine names them.

What is the Guna Milan score for Aries and Libra Moons?
From 14.5 to 28.5 out of 36 with Aries entered first (median 25.5) and 15.5 to 29.5 with Libra first (median 26.5), over all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Do opposite Moon signs get Bhakoot dosha?
Not in this engine. A 1/7 distance is not one of the 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 distances it scores 0, so Bhakoot is a full 7.
Why is Graha Maitri 3 and not higher?
Mars and Venus are neutral to each other in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 as the engine reads it. A neutral pair scores 3 of 5; only friendship or a shared lord gives more.
Why does the score change if we swap the order?
Varna compares the first entry with the second, and Kshatriya and Shudra give different results each way. The match tool lists every koota so the difference is visible.
Is a high score a recommendation to marry?
No. It is a traditional score from two Moon positions. This app makes no recommendation about whether two people should marry.
