In short
An Aries Moon with a Virgo Moon scores between 8.5 and 21 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, median 13.5, with Aries entered first; Virgo first adds one point throughout. The signs fix only 2 of their 15 points, because the 6/8 distance zeroes Bhakoot and Mars counts Mercury as an enemy.
Of the twelve sign pairs that include an Aries Moon, Aries with Virgo has the lowest median in this app's Ashtakoot engine. That is worth stating plainly and then taking apart, because a low number from two Moon signs is easy to misread. Almost the whole gap is decided by two sign-level rules, one of them taken from web references rather than any book, and the score says nothing about two people beyond how their Moons meet those rules.
The signs are covered on Aries, Mesha rashi and Virgo, Kanya rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains each koota and links the other sign pairs, and the Kundli matching calculator gives the real figure for two charts.
Mesh and Kanya as BPHS describes them
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 6-7 calls Mesh a fiery quadruped of the hills, ruled by Mangal and linked with courage. Sl. 13-14 calls Kanya a biped hill-resorter, strong by day, with "grains and fire in its hands"; it "belongs to the business community", is Tamasic in the text's terms, and is ruled by Budh (Mercury). Sl. 5-5.5 makes Mesh movable and bilious, Kanya dual and windy. Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives Mercury its exaltation in the first 15 degrees of Kanya, so the Virgo Moon's lord is in its strongest sign there; the matching rules do not use this.
A Virgo Moon falls in Uttara Phalguni padas 2-4, Hasta (four padas) or Chitra padas 1-2. The Aries Moon falls in Ashwini, Bharani or Krittika pada 1.
Sign kootas: the score Aries and Virgo fix
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Aries first, Virgo second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 0 (1 if Virgo is first) | Kshatriya and Vaishya values, compared in entry order |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 1 | Adjacent Vashya groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 1 | Mars counts Mercury an enemy; Mercury is neutral |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 0 | Virgo is 6th from Aries, Aries 8th from Virgo |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 0 or 2 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
The four sign kootas yield 2 of 15 with Aries entered first, 3 with Virgo first. The 81 pairings then range from 8.5 to 21 out of 36 (median 13.5) in the first order and 9.5 to 22 (median 14.5) in the second. The pair's best result, 21, is only two points above the lowest Aries-Cancer pairing, which shows how much ground the sign half gives away before any star is considered.
Bhakoot at the 6/8 distance
Counting inclusively from Aries, Virgo is 6th; from Virgo, Aries is 8th. A 6/8 pair is one of the three distances the engine scores 0 for Bhakoot, and it does so in every pairing. The rule is from two published web references named in the engine's header; no book in this library contains it. It is also the largest single loss: 7 points of the 13 the signs give up. Bhakoot dosha explains how the tradition speaks of this, and why the label is less alarming than it sounds.
Graha Maitri: Mars and Mercury
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, in the engine's lists, gives Mars exactly one natural enemy, Mercury. Mercury's own lists name the Sun and Venus as friends and the Moon as an enemy, and say nothing of Mars, so Mercury is neutral toward it. The Graha Maitri value for neutral-enemy is disputed among the engine's sources (0.5 in one, 1 in another), so the engine keeps its older 1. It is the same result Aries gets with Gemini, the other Mercury sign.
Varna and Vashya
BPHS gives Kanya the business community, and the engine's Varna table turns that into the Vaishya value; Mesh, "related to kings", is Kshatriya. The engine scores the point only when the first entry's value is at least the second's, so the order matters and its header says so. These are the koota's technical terms only. Vashya puts the two signs in neighbouring groups, so it gives the middle value, 1 of 2, in every pairing.
The nakshatra kootas for this pair
With the sign half so low, the nakshatras decide whether a pairing lands near 9 or near 21. Yoni is the one place this pair can lose a further 2: Hasta is a Buffalo in the engine's table, and Buffalo is listed as the enemy of Horse, the animal of Ashwini. So an Ashwini Moon with a Hasta Moon scores 0 for Yoni, where every other combination here scores 2.
Gana and Nadi carry the rest. On the Virgo side Uttara Phalguni is Manushya, Hasta Deva and Chitra Rakshasa; Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are both Aadi Nadi, Chitra Madhya. An Ashwini Moon (Deva, Aadi) therefore shares its Nadi with two of the three Virgo stars, which is why the example below loses 8 there. A Bharani Moon (Manushya, Madhya) shares Nadi only with Chitra. These group names are the system's vocabulary; Gana labels are not descriptions of character.
The nakshatra calculator gives the exact star for a birth time, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the star, not the sign, settles most of the score.
Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Virgo 1 degree
At 1 degree of Aries the Moon is in Ashwini; at 1 degree of Virgo it is in Uttara Phalguni, second pada. With Aries first, this example lands exactly on the pair's minimum:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Kshatriya first, Vaishya second |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Horse and Cow |
| Graha Maitri | 1 | 5 | Sign: Mars-Mercury, enemy and neutral |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Deva and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 6/8 distance |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Aadi |
| Total | 8.5 | 36 |
Reading it koota by koota: Bhakoot and Nadi together take 15 points, and neither has anything to do with how two people behave; one is a count of signs, the other a three-way grouping of stars. The 8.5 is an honest result of the rules as coded. It is also a reminder of how much a single input moves things. Move the Virgo Moon to 25 degrees, into Chitra, and Nadi flips to 8 while Gana falls from 3 to 0 (Chitra is Rakshasa against Ashwini's Deva); the engine then returns 13.5, exactly the pair's median. One star changed, two kootas moved in opposite directions, and the sign half did not move at all.
A low Guna Milan score is not a forecast and is not a reason, on this site, to reach any conclusion about a relationship. The tradition treats several of these zeros as subject to exceptions and discussion, and this app does not offer remedies. Mars placement is a different check, covered in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not; Nadi dosha covers the Nadi result.
What the texts say about Aries with Virgo
The books here describe Mesh and Kanya and the Mars-Mercury enmity. None of them contains Ashtakoot: a search of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology for koota, kuta, bhakoot, nadi, gana and yoni finds no matching rule and no comment on this sign pair as partners. The 6/8 Bhakoot rule that does most of the work here comes from the web references named in the engine.
For contrast see Aries and Cancer and Aries and Libra, and Virgo and Virgo. The love compatibility calculator offers a comparison outside the koota system.
- What do Aries and Virgo Moons score in Guna Milan?
- From 8.5 to 21 out of 36 with Aries entered first (median 13.5) and 9.5 to 22 with Virgo first (median 14.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why is the score so low for this pair?
- Two sign rules: Bhakoot is 0 at the 6/8 distance, and Graha Maitri is 1 because Mars counts Mercury as an enemy. The signs give only 2 or 3 of their 15 points.
- Is the 6/8 Bhakoot rule from BPHS?
- No. None of the books in this library contains Bhakoot. The engine follows two published web references, which it names in its code.
- Can a particular pair of nakshatras raise the score much?
- Up to 21 or 22, depending on order, when Tara, Gana and Nadi all fall well. The match tool shows exactly where your two stars land.
- Does a low score mean we should not marry?
- This app does not give that verdict. The score applies one traditional rule set to two Moon positions. It does not describe either person.
