Leo and Capricorn produce the lowest sign-level score of any pair on the Gemini, Cancer and Leo pages in this app's Ashtakoot engine: half a point out of 15 with Leo entered first. That needs explaining carefully, because a number that low invites a reading it cannot bear. It is the sum of three separate table lookups, each of which can be traced, and none of which is a statement about two people.

Simh and Makar in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 sets the two signs on opposite footings. Simh (Sl. 12) is Sattvic, four-footed, "a royal Rasi", strong during the day and residing in the east, ruled by Surya. Makar (Sl. 19-20) is Tamasic, earthy, strong at night and representing the south, quadruped in its first half and "footless, moving in water" in its second, lorded by Sani. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Simh fixed and bilious, Makar movable and windy. The engine takes only Varna classes from this chapter.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. A Capricorn Moon is in the last three quarters of Uttara Ashadha, in Shravana, or in the first half of Dhanishta.

Bhakoot (the koota): counting inclusively, Capricorn is the 6th sign from Leo and Leo the 8th from Capricorn. 6/8 is one of the engine's three zero distances, along with 2/12 and 5/9, a rule taken from two web references in its header because the library's classical books do not state it. A 0 here is commonly labelled Bhakoot dosha.
Graha Maitri (the koota): in the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, the Sun lists Saturn as an enemy, and Saturn lists the Sun as one. Mutual enmity scores 0. The engine gave 1 for this case until October 2026; it changed to 0 because all four of its references agree.
Varna (the koota): the engine passes it when the first Moon's class is at the same place in its list as the second's or later. Leo's class comes before Capricorn's, so Leo entered first gives 0 and Capricorn entered first gives 1. The header lists this as an open point. Vashya (the koota) gives 0.5. Varna is a sign classification in a text, not a ranking of people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is 0 in 36 pairings and 8 in 45. Magha is Antya, like Uttara Ashadha and Shravana; Purva Phalguni is Madhya, like Dhanishta.
- Gana is 6 in 23, 3 in 42, 0 in 16. Magha (Rakshasa) meets Shravana (Deva) in the 16 zeros, and scores full against Dhanishta (Rakshasa).
- Tara is 3 in 19 and 1.5 in 62.
- Yoni is 2 in all 81: Rat and Cow against Mongoose, Monkey and Lion, no shared animal and no enemy pair.
With the signs contributing almost nothing, the total is effectively the nakshatra score. A scratch run of every star combination shows a clean split. Magha against Shravana (16 pairings) loses both Gana and Nadi and totals 4, the minimum. Magha against Uttara Ashadha and Purva Phalguni against Dhanishta each lose Nadi and total 7. At the other end, Purva Phalguni against Uttara Ashadha (12 pairings) keeps full Gana, a different Nadi and full Tara, reaching 19.5, the maximum; the single Leo quarter of Uttara Phalguni does the same against Uttara Ashadha.
Magha is the most exposed Leo star here. Its Antya nadi matches two of Capricorn's three stars, and its Rakshasa gana clashes with Deva Shravana. Only against Dhanishta does it do well, scoring 18. Purva Phalguni is steadier: Manushya, so Gana never falls to 0, and Madhya, so it shares a Nadi only with Dhanishta.
Shravana, Capricorn's four-quarter middle star, is the pivot on the other side. It is the only Deva star involved, so it is the one that can produce a Gana of 0, and only against Magha. Against Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni it scores a middling 15 to 16.5. A Capricorn Moon in Shravana is therefore close to neutral for this pair unless the Leo Moon is in Magha.
The range of totals
Leo first, the 81 totals run from 4 to 19.5 out of 36, median 15. Capricorn first, 5 to 20.5, median 16. Even the best combination stays under 21, because the four sign kootas, which carry 15 points between them, contribute at most 1.5.
For comparison in the same engine, Leo with Aquarius - also ruled by Saturn, also mutual enemies - runs 14 to 25 because it sits at a safe 7/7 distance and keeps Bhakoot. Cancer with Capricorn, with a merely hostile Saturn and a full Bhakoot, runs 12.5 to 26.5. The low figures on this page come mainly from the combination of the 6/8 rule with the Sun-Saturn enmity, both of which are table entries.

Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Capricorn 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Leo is in Magha; a Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn is in the second quarter of Uttara Ashadha. Leo entered first:

Four kootas are 0 and the other four are partial. The shared Antya nadi is the largest single loss here among the nakshatra kootas. If the Leo Moon had been a few degrees further on, in Purva Phalguni, the same Capricorn Moon would have produced 19.5: Gana full (Manushya with Manushya), Nadi 8 (Madhya against Antya), and Tara full. That one shift of the Leo Moon moves the total from near the bottom of the range to its top.
What the classical texts say
BPHS provides the two engine inputs that matter here: the sign classes of Ch. 4 and the Sun-Saturn enmity of Ch. 3 Sl. 55. It does not provide the Ashtakoot points or the 6/8 rule, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of these books says anything about a Leo Moon matched with a Capricorn Moon, so there is no classical verdict on this pair to report.
What a score does not tell you
A 4 or a 19.5 is the arithmetic of one traditional rule set, several of whose cells its own sources dispute, applied to two Moon positions. It does not describe a relationship and does not decide one; this app gives no verdict on whether anyone should marry, and it does not prescribe remedies for a low score.
