In short
A Leo Moon and an Aquarius Moon score 14 to 25 out of 36 in this app, median 22, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Leo entered first; Aquarius first adds 1. The signs are opposite, a 7/7 distance that keeps Bhakoot at 7, but the Sun and Saturn are mutual enemies, so Graha Maitri is 0; neither sign has a Deva star, so Gana never drops to 0.
Leo and Aquarius face each other across the zodiac, and their lords, the Sun and Saturn, are a classical pair of opposites: BPHS calls Saturn "Surya's offspring" and the friendship tables make them mutual enemies. In Ashtakoot matching that enmity costs the full Graha Maitri, but the opposition itself is a safe distance, and the birth stars of these two signs turn out to be unusually compatible. The engine's working follows.
Sign pages: Leo, Simha rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching hub covers the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Simh and Kumbh in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5 makes both signs fixed, and both rise with the head and are strong by day. Simh (Sl. 12) is Sattvic, four-footed, royal, forest-dwelling and eastern; Kumbh (Sl. 21-21.5) is "a man holding a pot", airy, Tamasic, biped, resorting to deep water and ruling the west, its lord "Sani, Surya's offspring". Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 draws a direct parallel between them: "Sani's arrangements are same in Kumbh, as Surya has in Simh" - the first 20 degrees of each are the lord's moolatrikona. Ashtakoot uses none of this; it asks only who rules each Moon sign.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. An Aquarius Moon is in the second half of Dhanishta, in Shatabhisha, or in the first three quarters of Purva Bhadrapada.
The kootas the two signs fix: 7.5 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Leo first | Aquarius first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 0 | 1 | Different classes; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | 0.5 | Groups more than one step apart |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 0 | 0 | The Sun and Saturn list each other as enemies |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | Distance 7 both ways |
| Sign total | 15 | 7.5 | 8.5 |
Graha Maitri (the koota) is 0. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, the Sun lists Saturn as an enemy and Saturn lists the Sun as one. Mutual enmity scored 1 in this engine until October 2026 and scores 0 now, a value all four of its references agree on.
Bhakoot (the koota) keeps all 7. Aquarius is the 7th sign from Leo and Leo the 7th from Aquarius; the engine zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, a rule it takes from two web references because the library's classical books do not contain it.
Varna (the koota) is order-dependent: the engine gives 1 only when the first Moon's class sits at the same place in its list as the second's or later. Leo's class comes before Aquarius's, so Leo first scores 0 and Aquarius first 1. The header lists the point as open. Vashya (the koota) gives 0.5. Varna is a classification of signs, not of people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Gana is 6 in 39 pairings and 3 in 42, never 0. Neither sign has a Deva star: Magha, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha are Rakshasa; the Phalgunis and Purva Bhadrapada are Manushya.
- Nadi is 8 in 66 and 0 in 15. Magha is Antya and no Aquarius star is, so a Magha Moon never shares a Nadi here. The shared cases are Purva Phalguni with Dhanishta (Madhya) and Uttara Phalguni with Shatabhisha or Purva Bhadrapada (Aadi).
- Tara is 1.5 in every pairing.
- Yoni is 2 in every pairing: Rat and Cow against Lion and Horse, with no shared animal and no enemy pair.
This is a generous set of stars. Magha, which holds four of Leo's quarters, cannot lose Nadi and scores full Gana against both Rakshasa stars of Aquarius, giving 25 against Dhanishta and Shatabhisha alike. Purva Phalguni scores 25 against Purva Bhadrapada (both Manushya) and 22 against Shatabhisha, dropping to 14 only against Dhanishta, where the Madhya nadi is shared. The minimum of 14 is reached in just 12 of the 81 pairings.
Put differently, for most Leo-Aquarius couples the question is not whether the stars clash badly - with no Gana 0 and no Yoni enemies, they cannot - but whether they happen to share a Nadi. Twelve of the 81 pairings do, plus three more where Uttara Phalguni meets Purva Bhadrapada; the other 66 keep all 8 Nadi points. That is a smaller share of shared-Nadi pairings than in many sign pairs, which is why the median of 22 sits only three points below the maximum.
The single Leo quarter of Uttara Phalguni is the weak spot, as it often is on these pages. Being Aadi, it shares a Nadi with seven of Aquarius's nine quarters, so its results are mostly 14 or 17. Its counterpart on the other side, Dhanishta, is strong against Magha and Uttara Phalguni and weak only against Purva Phalguni.
The range of totals
Leo first, the 81 totals run from 14 to 25 out of 36, median 22. Aquarius first, 15 to 26, median 23. The band is fairly narrow and sits in the low twenties: no Gana 0 to drag a pairing down, a full Bhakoot to hold it up, and a Graha Maitri of 0 that caps it. Tara and Yoni, fixed at 1.5 and 2 in every pairing, add a constant 3.5, so the nakshatra share of any total runs from 6.5 to 17.5, and only Gana and Nadi move it within that band.
In the same engine, Leo with Capricorn, Saturn's other sign, runs only 4 to 19.5 because the 6/8 distance removes Bhakoot as well. Leo with Libra, another mutual-enemy pair at a safe distance, runs 11 to 25 - the same ceiling, but with a lower floor because Libra has a Deva star. These are properties of the tables, not of people.
Where a couple falls depends on both stars. The nakshatra calculator finds them from birth details; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how the star relates to the sign.
Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Leo is in Magha; a Moon at 1 degree of Aquarius is in the third quarter of Dhanishta. Leo entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Leo entered first |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups not adjacent |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 14 unfavourable, 15 favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Rat and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 0 | 5 | Sign: Sun and Saturn, mutual enemies |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa with Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 7/7 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya with Madhya |
| Total | 25 | 36 |
The example reaches the pair's maximum. Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi are all full and supply 21 of the 25 points; Varna and Graha Maitri supply nothing. As elsewhere, the Rakshasa labels are technical classifications of the two stars, which the engine scores as a full Gana match; they are not descriptions of anyone. Entering the Aquarius Moon first would give 26 through Varna alone.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the Varna classes (Ch. 4) and the Sun-Saturn enmity (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) behind two rows of the table; it also draws the Simh-Kumbh parallel quoted above. The Ashtakoot points are not in BPHS, nor in Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of these comments on a Leo Moon matched with an Aquarius Moon.
What a score does not tell you
A Graha Maitri of 0 is one cell of a friendship table; a total of 14 or 25 is the arithmetic of one tradition applied to two Moons. Neither describes two people, and this app does not say whether anyone should marry. Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the shared-Nadi result. The love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Leo and Capricorn, Leo and Pisces and Gemini and Aquarius.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Leo Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
- 14 to 25 out of 36 in this app with Leo entered first (median 22); 15 to 26 with Aquarius first.
- Why is Graha Maitri 0?
- In the BPHS relationships the engine uses, the Sun and Saturn list each other as enemies. Mutual enmity scores 0; the engine gave 1 before October 2026.
- Does the opposition cause Bhakoot dosha?
- No. A 7/7 distance keeps the full 7 points. Only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score 0.
- Can Gana be 0 for this pair?
- No. Neither sign contains a Deva star, so the Deva-Rakshasa combination never occurs. Gana is 6 in 39 pairings and 3 in 42.
- How do we see our real score?
- Enter both births in the match tool. Entering Aquarius first shows one point more than Leo first.
