In short
A Leo Moon and a Pisces Moon score 11.5 to 26 out of 36 in this app, median 21, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Leo entered first; Pisces first lowers each by 1. The Sun and Jupiter are mutual friends (Graha Maitri 5), but Pisces is the 8th sign from Leo, so Bhakoot is 0 and the sign kootas give 6.5 of 15.
Leo and Pisces are ruled by the Sun and Jupiter, two grahas that count each other as friends, and that gives the pair a full Graha Maitri in Guna Milan. The signs, though, sit at a 6/8 distance, which the engine treats as a zero for Bhakoot, and their birth stars include one combination that drags the total right down. Both effects are traced below.
Background on the signs: Leo, Simha rashi and Pisces, Meena rashi. The system: the nakshatra matching hub. Two real charts: the Kundli matching calculator.
Simh and Meen in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 makes both signs Sattvic and has little else in common between them. Simh (Sl. 12) is four-footed, royal, forest-dwelling, eastern, rising with its head and strong by day, ruled by Surya. Meen (Sl. 22-24) is footless, "a pair of fish, one tailed with the head of the other", watery, northern, strong at night, rising with both head and back, "denotes resoluteness", and is ruled by Guru. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Simh fixed and bilious, Meen dual and phlegmatic. Simh receives a Varna in the text; Meen takes its water element's class in the engine's table.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. A Pisces Moon is in the last quarter of Purva Bhadrapada, in Uttara Bhadrapada or in Revati. Notice the near-symmetry: each sign has a "Purva" star and an "Uttara" star of the same family name.
The kootas this sign pair fixes: 6.5 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Leo first | Pisces first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Different classes; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | 0.5 | Groups more than one step apart |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | 5 | The Sun and Jupiter list each other as friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | Pisces is 8th from Leo; Leo 6th from Pisces |
| Sign total | 15 | 6.5 | 5.5 |
Graha Maitri (the koota) is full. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, the Sun and Jupiter each count the other a friend; mutual friendship scores 5. This is the same relationship that gives Leo and Sagittarius their full Graha Maitri.
Bhakoot (the koota) is lost. Counting inclusively, Pisces is the 8th sign from Leo and Leo the 6th from Pisces. 6/8 is one of the engine's three zero distances (with 2/12 and 5/9), adopted from two web references because the library's classical books do not contain the rule. The 0 is usually called Bhakoot dosha.
Varna (the koota) depends on order: the engine gives 1 when the first Moon's class is at the same position in its list as the second's or later. Leo's class comes after Pisces's, so Leo first scores 1 and Pisces first 0. The header records this as unresolved. Vashya (the koota) gives 0.5. Varna names a sign classification and nothing about people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is 8 in 48 pairings and 0 in 33. Magha shares the Antya nadi with Revati, Purva Phalguni the Madhya with Uttara Bhadrapada, and Uttara Phalguni the Aadi with Purva Bhadrapada.
- Gana is 6 in 25, 3 in 40, 0 in 16. The zeros are Magha (Rakshasa) against Revati (Deva). The Phalgunis and Bhadrapadas are all Manushya and score 6 with each other.
- Yoni is 4 in 4 pairings and 2 in 77. Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada both carry the Cow, so the single Leo quarter of Uttara Phalguni meets the same animal across all four quarters of Uttara Bhadrapada.
- Tara is 3 in 16 and 1.5 in 65.
A scratch run of every star combination puts the extremes in sharp relief. Magha against Revati (16 pairings) is the minimum, 11.5: Gana 0 and a shared Antya nadi at once, despite a full Tara. Uttara Phalguni against Uttara Bhadrapada (4 pairings) is the maximum, 26: matching Cow animals, matching Manushya ganas and different nadis. Between them, Magha scores 21 against either Bhadrapada; Purva Phalguni scores 24 against Purva Bhadrapada but only 16 against Uttara Bhadrapada, where the Madhya nadi is shared.
Revati is the pivotal Pisces star. Against Magha it produces the pair's lowest result; against either Phalguni it gives a steady 21. A Pisces Moon late in the sign, in Revati, is therefore either a neutral or a poor partner for a Leo Moon here, depending almost entirely on whether that Leo Moon is in Magha.
The "Purva" and "Uttara" families make a tidy pattern on the Leo side too. Purva Phalguni does best with Purva Bhadrapada and worst with Uttara Bhadrapada; the single quarter of Uttara Phalguni does best with Uttara Bhadrapada and worst with Purva Bhadrapada. In each case the result turns on Nadi, because the like-named stars here sit in different nadis while the cross-named ones share. The shared names are a coincidence of the nakshatra list, but they make the scoring easy to follow.
The range of totals
Leo first, the 81 totals run from 11.5 to 26 out of 36, median 21. Pisces first, 10.5 to 25, median 20. The full Graha Maitri gives the pair a floor that the 6/8 loss alone cannot push into single figures; the nakshatras add between 5 and 19.5 on top of the 6.5 sign points.
In the same engine, Leo with Sagittarius - the Sun and Jupiter again, but at a 5/9 distance - runs 13.5 to 26, and Gemini with Pisces, which keeps Bhakoot but has a hostile Jupiter, runs 16.5 to 27.5. Leo with Scorpio, friendly lords at a safe 4/10, reaches 32.5. Most of the gap between those pages and this one comes from the Bhakoot rule. These are statements about tables, not people.
Where an actual couple lands depends on the two stars. The nakshatra calculator finds them; Moon sign and nakshatra explains why a birth time matters.
Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Pisces 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Leo is in Magha; a Moon at 1 degree of Pisces is in the last quarter of Purva Bhadrapada. Leo entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Leo entered first |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups not adjacent |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 16 unfavourable, 13 favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Rat and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Sun and Jupiter, mutual friends |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa with Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 8/6 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya with Aadi |
| Total | 21 | 36 |
The total equals the median. Graha Maitri and Nadi together supply 13 of the 21 points; Bhakoot supplies none. If the Pisces Moon were later in the sign, in Revati, the same Magha Moon would lose both Gana and Nadi and fall to the 11.5 minimum - a 9.5-point drop within one Moon sign, and a reminder of how much the nakshatras decide.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign classes (Ch. 4) and the Sun-Jupiter friendship (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) behind two of the sign kootas. The Ashtakoot points and the 6/8 rule are not in BPHS, nor in Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of them comments on a Leo Moon matched with a Pisces Moon, so this page reports no classical verdict.
What a score does not tell you
An 11.5 or a 26 is how two Moon positions meet one tradition's rules. It is not a description of a couple, and this app gives no advice on whether anyone should marry. Mars placement is a separate check - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha explains the shared-Nadi result. The love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Leo and Sagittarius, Leo and Aquarius and Cancer and Pisces.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Leo Moon and a Pisces Moon?
- 11.5 to 26 out of 36 in this app with Leo entered first (median 21); 10.5 to 25 with Pisces first.
- If the Sun and Jupiter are friends, why is the score moderate?
- Their friendship gives the full 5 for Graha Maitri, but Pisces is the 8th sign from Leo, and the engine scores 6/8 distances 0 for the 7-point Bhakoot.
- Which star pairing scores lowest?
- A Leo Moon in Magha with a Pisces Moon in Revati: Rakshasa against Deva gives Gana 0, and both are Antya nadi, so Nadi is 0. The total is 11.5.
- Why does entering Pisces first lower the total?
- Varna compares the first Moon with the second. Leo first passes; Pisces first does not.
- How do we find our actual score?
- Enter both births in the match tool, which reads both nakshatras.
