In short
This app scores a Libra Moon with an Aquarius Moon from 19 to 27 out of 36, median 24, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, the same in either order. Venus and Saturn are mutual friends and Vashya is full, but the 5/9 trine between the signs sets Bhakoot to 0 under the rule the engine adopted in October 2026.
Libra and Aquarius are both air signs, the 7th and 11th of the zodiac, in trine to each other. Their lords are mutual friends. By the standards of Ashtakoot matching most of that is good news, with one large exception: the engine treats a 5/9 trine between the Moons as a failing Bhakoot distance. What remains is a pair with a narrow, fairly even spread of totals, where the floor and the ceiling are only eight points apart and the order of entry makes no difference at all.
The signs are covered at Libra, Tula rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching guide is the hub for the eight kootas and every pair; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Tula and Kumbh in BPHS Ch. 4
The text groups these two signs directly. Sl. 5-5.5 names Mithun, Tula and Kumbh as the mixed signs. Tula (Sl. 15-16.5) rises with its head, is strong in daytime, a biped of medium build, of Rajo-Gun, ruled by Shukr. Kumbh (Sl. 21-21.5) "represents a man holding a pot", is a biped of medium build, "very strong in daytime", rises with its head, is airy and Tamasic, and its lord is Shani. Apart from their quality - Rajas against Tamas - and their lords, BPHS describes them in very similar terms.
A Libra Moon is in Chitra (two padas), Swati (four) or Vishakha (three). An Aquarius Moon is in Dhanishta (two), Shatabhisha (four) or Purva Bhadrapada (three). The signs share no star, and the 81 combinations of their padas are scored below.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Libra with Aquarius | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Same class value, so order cannot matter |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Venus and Saturn, mutual friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | Aquarius is 5th from Libra; Libra is 9th from Aquarius |
Three of the four are full. Graha Maitri gives 5 because, in the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Venus counts Saturn a friend and Saturn counts Venus a friend. Vashya gives 2 because the engine places both signs in one group. Varna, the koota that can depend on who is entered first, gives 1 either way here because both signs carry the same value in the engine's table. Varna is used purely as the koota's name.
Bhakoot: the trine that scores zero
Counting inclusively, Aquarius is the 5th sign from Libra and Libra the 9th from Aquarius. Until October 2026 the engine scored that 7. Its header records the change: two published references ([A] and [B]) agree that 5/9 belongs with 2/12 and 6/8 as a zero-scoring Bhakoot distance, and the engine adopted it. The header is also candid that no book in this library contains the rule, and practice varies; some readers treat a trine between Moons favourably. Bhakoot dosha explains the term and its limits.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
Nadi is nearly always full here, at 8 in 77 pairings. Swati and Vishakha are Antya in the engine's table; Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada are Aadi. The only overlap is Chitra with Dhanishta, both Madhya - four pairings. That is a striking difference from the Libra-Capricorn pair next door, where most stars share a Nadi.
Gana is the main variable. Dhanishta and Shatabhisha are Rakshasa and Purva Bhadrapada is Manushya; on the Libra side Chitra and Vishakha are Rakshasa and Swati Deva. Rakshasa with Rakshasa gives 6 (30 pairings); Swati against either Rakshasa star of Aquarius gives 0 (24); the Manushya crossings give 3 (27).
Yoni has one enemy pair in play. Swati is the Buffalo and Shatabhisha the Horse, and the engine counts those as natural enemies, so 16 pairings score 0. All others score 2. Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in 12.
The range of totals
The engine's 81 totals run from 19 to 27 out of 36, median 24, identical in both orders. The fixed sign contribution is 8. The eight-point spread above the floor comes from Gana, Yoni, the rare Nadi zero and Tara.
The floor of 19 is reached in two quite different ways, which says something about how the kootas trade off. A Chitra Moon with a Dhanishta Moon loses Nadi (both Madhya) but scores 6 on Gana and 3 on Tara. A Swati Moon with a Shatabhisha Moon keeps Nadi but loses both Gana (Deva against Rakshasa) and Yoni (Buffalo against Horse), with Tara at 3. Eight points lost one way, eight points lost the other - the same 19.
The ceiling of 27 needs every variable koota at its best except Yoni, which cannot exceed 2 here because no Libra animal matches an Aquarius one: Rakshasa with Rakshasa, different Nadi, Tara 3. A Vishakha Moon with a Shatabhisha Moon is one such pairing.
Purva Bhadrapada, the Aquarius star that continues into Pisces, is the moderating case. It is Manushya, so its Gana against any Libra star is 3 rather than 6 or 0; it is Aadi, so it keeps Nadi against every Libra star; and its animal, the Lion, has no enemy on the Libra side. An Aquarius Moon in Purva Bhadrapada therefore avoids every zero the nakshatras can produce for this pair, but it also cannot reach the ceiling, since its Gana is capped at 3. Its pairings sit in the middle of the distribution, around the median of 24.
For a real couple, which of these applies depends on the stars, and the stars depend on birth times. The nakshatra calculator finds yours; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how a sign holds parts of three stars.
Worked example: Libra 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree
A Libra Moon at 1 degree is in Chitra; an Aquarius Moon at 1 degree is in Dhanishta. ashtakoot() returns, in either order:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: same value |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same group |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable both ways |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Tiger and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Venus and Saturn, mutual friends |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa and Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 5/9 |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Madhya |
| Total | 19 | 36 |
By chance the standard example lands on one of the only four same-Nadi pairings, and so at the floor of the range. It shows the two big zeroes side by side: Bhakoot from the signs, Nadi from the stars, fifteen points between them. Everything else is at or near its maximum. The engine's note for the Nadi result reads "traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly", which is as far as it goes.
Tara by hand: from Chitra to Dhanishta the inclusive count is 10, remainder 1 after dividing by 9; back from Dhanishta to Chitra it is 19, remainder 1 again. Neither is 3, 5 or 7, the engine's unfavourable remainders, so both directions pass and Tara is 3. Move the Aquarius Moon a few degrees into Shatabhisha and Nadi turns to 8, lifting the same Chitra Moon to the upper part of the range.
What the classical texts say
BPHS gives the sign descriptions and the friendship lists behind Graha Maitri. The library has no Ashtakoot text: BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology were searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni with no matching rule found. None addresses Libra with Aquarius as a pair. The 5/9 Bhakoot rule that shapes this page comes from web references, as the engine states.
What a score does not tell you
A score that depends on a 2026 rule revision is plainly a property of the rule set, not of two people. This app does not give a verdict on marriage. Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not; Nadi dosha covers the same-Nadi rule; the love compatibility calculator compares without Ashtakoot.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Libra Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
- From 19 to 27 out of 36, median 24, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, in either order of entry.
- Two air signs in trine - why is Bhakoot 0?
- The engine scores 5/9 distances as 0, alongside 2/12 and 6/8, following two published references; before October 2026 it scored 5/9 as 7. The classical books in this library do not contain the rule.
- Is Nadi dosha common for this pair?
- No. Nadi is 0 in only 4 of 81 pairings, all of them a Chitra Moon with a Dhanishta Moon.
- Which koota varies most?
- Gana: 6 in 30 pairings, 3 in 27 and 0 in 24. A Swati Moon facing Dhanishta or Shatabhisha gives the zeroes.
- How do we find our actual score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool to get all eight kootas from your real stars.
