In short
A Taurus Moon with a Gemini Moon scores between 17.5 and 24 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, median 20.5, with Taurus entered first; Gemini first adds one Varna point to each. Venus and Mercury are mutual friends, so Graha Maitri is a full 5, but the signs are adjacent, so Bhakoot is 0.
Taurus and Gemini are next-door signs whose lords get on well. In Ashtakoot matching the first fact costs seven points and the second earns five, which leaves the pair's sign half in the middle. What makes this pair stand out is something else: its range is unusually tight. From the worst pairing to the best there are only 6.5 points, because the nakshatra kootas that swing hardest elsewhere barely move here.
The two signs are described on Taurus, Vrishabha rashi and Gemini, Mithuna rashi. For all eight kootas and the full list of pairs, see the nakshatra matching hub; for an actual score from birth details, the Kundli matching calculator.
Vrishabh and Mithun as BPHS draws them
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 8 makes Vrishabh an earthy, fixed quadruped of the South, ruled by Shukr (Venus), associated with "villages and businessmen". Sl. 9-9.5 makes Mithun an airy, dual, biped sign of the West that "represents a male and a female, holding a mace and lute", lives in villages and is ruled by Budh (Mercury). Both are villagers in the text's geography, and both, unusually, are given windy qualities: Vrishabh is listed among the windy signs in Sl. 5-5.5, and Mithun is called "windy in temperament" in its own description though Sl. 5-5.5 classes it as mixed.
BPHS gives Vrishabh a social class and Mithun none. The engine's header explains that Mithun takes its element's value, air, which the table makes Shudra; Vrishabh is Vaishya.
A Taurus Moon falls in Krittika padas 2-4, Rohini or Mrigashira padas 1-2. A Gemini Moon falls in Mrigashira padas 3-4, Ardra, or Punarvasu padas 1-3. Mrigashira straddles the boundary, so a pairing can put both Moons in the same star while they sit in different signs.
Sign kootas: what Taurus and Gemini fix
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Taurus first, Gemini second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 0 (1 if Gemini is first) | Vaishya and Shudra values compared in entry order |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 1 | Adjacent Vashya groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 5 | Venus and Mercury are mutual friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 0 | Gemini 2nd from Taurus, Taurus 12th from Gemini |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 or 4 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
The signs fix 6 of 15 points with Taurus first, 7 with Gemini first. Across the 81 pairings the total runs 17.5 to 24 out of 36 (median 20.5) in the first order and 18.5 to 25 (median 21.5) in the second. The bottom of this range is higher than for many pairs, and the top lower: few combinations here are either very good or very poor by the engine's rules.
Bhakoot: the 2/12 loss
Gemini is the 2nd sign from Taurus counted inclusively, and Taurus the 12th from Gemini. The engine's Bhakoot rule scores 2/12 as 0, alongside 5/9 and 6/8, so all 81 pairings lose 7. The rule comes from two web references cited in the engine's header; none of the books in this library contains it. The common name for this 0 is Bhakoot dosha, and that page explains it without alarm.
Graha Maitri: Venus and Mercury
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, as the engine reads it, gives Venus two friends, Mercury and Saturn, and gives Mercury two, the Sun and Venus. Each names the other, so Graha Maitri scores the full 5, a value every reference the engine consulted agrees on.
Varna and Vashya
The engine's Varna koota compares the first entry's class value with the second's and awards the point when the first is at least as high. Vaishya first against Shudra second fails; the reverse passes. The engine's header lists this asymmetry as an open question. Varna is the koota's technical name only. Vashya sits Taurus and Gemini in neighbouring groups for 1 of 2.
Why the nakshatras barely move this pair
The key is Nadi. On the Taurus side Krittika and Rohini are Antya and Mrigashira Madhya. On the Gemini side Mrigashira is Madhya and Ardra and Punarvasu are Aadi. The only way two Moons here can share a Nadi is for both to be in Mrigashira, one at the end of Taurus and one at the start of Gemini. Every other pairing keeps the full 8. Nadi, the koota that usually produces the biggest jumps, is almost a constant for this pair.
The Gana koota does vary. Krittika is Rakshasa in the engine's table, and two of the three Gemini stars, Mrigashira and Punarvasu, are Deva; that combination scores 0. Rohini (Manushya) and Ardra (Manushya) score 6 together. Yoni reaches 4 when both Moons are Serpents, which happens when a Rohini or Mrigashira Moon in Taurus meets a Mrigashira Moon in Gemini. These are the system's categories, not descriptions of people.
Even so, the exact star matters for the details. The nakshatra calculator finds it from a birth time, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how sign and star relate.
Both Moons in Mrigashira
The one Nadi-0 case is worth seeing whole. Run directly, a Taurus Moon at 28 degrees and a Gemini Moon at 2 degrees, both in Mrigashira, score 19 with Taurus first. Tara is 3, Yoni 4 (Serpent with Serpent) and Gana 6 (Deva with Deva), all full, while Nadi is 0 and Bhakoot 0. The total lands a point and a half under the median despite the three full nakshatra rows. Two Moons four degrees apart, in the same star, can still be in different signs, and that alone fixes the 2/12 Bhakoot loss. It is the clearest case in this pair of the system rewarding closeness in some kootas and penalising it in others.
Worked example: Taurus 1 degree with Gemini 1 degree
At 1 degree of Taurus the Moon is in Krittika, second pada. At 1 degree of Gemini it is in Mrigashira, third pada. Entered Taurus first, this example is the pair's minimum:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Vaishya first, Shudra second |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Sheep and Serpent |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Venus and Mercury, mutual friends |
| Gana | 0 | 6 | Nakshatra: Krittika Rakshasa, Mrigashira Deva |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 2/12 distance |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya and Madhya |
| Total | 17.5 | 36 |
Even at its minimum this pair keeps Nadi and Graha Maitri, 13 points between them. What it loses is Bhakoot, Gana and half of Tara. At the other end, a Taurus Moon at about 21 degrees (Rohini) with a Gemini Moon at about 5 degrees (Mrigashira) gives the maximum of 24 in the engine's sample of pada midpoints: Tara 3, Yoni 4, Gana 3, Nadi 8. The difference between the two ends is almost all Gana, Tara and Yoni, the three smallest nakshatra kootas.
A narrow range does not make the number more meaningful as a verdict. It is still a description of how two Moon positions meet a rule set. The separate Mars check is explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not, and Nadi dosha covers the one Mrigashira-Mrigashira case.
What the classical texts say
BPHS describes Vrishabh and Mithun and the friendship between Venus and Mercury. Neither BPHS nor Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology contains Ashtakoot, and none of them treats Taurus and Gemini Moons as a marriage pairing. The scoring here is the engine's, with its web sources named in the code.

- What do Taurus and Gemini Moons score in Guna Milan?
- From 17.5 to 24 out of 36 with Taurus entered first (median 20.5), and from 18.5 to 25 with Gemini first (median 21.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why is the range so narrow?
- Nadi, worth 8, is full in every pairing except when both Moons are in Mrigashira. With the largest nakshatra koota nearly constant, totals cluster together.
- Are Venus and Mercury friends?
- Yes, mutually, in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 as the engine uses it. Graha Maitri is therefore the full 5.
- Why does the result change when we swap names?
- Varna compares the first entry with the second: Vaishya then Shudra scores 0, Shudra then Vaishya scores 1. The match tool shows each koota.
- Is the score a verdict on us?
- No. It applies one traditional rule set to two Moon positions. This app does not decide whether two people should marry.
