In short
A Taurus Moon with a Virgo Moon scores between 12 and 26 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, with a median of 23, whichever person is entered first. Graha Maitri is a full 5 because Venus and Mercury are friends, but Bhakoot is 0 because Virgo is the 5th sign from Taurus.
Taurus and Virgo are earth signs, a trine apart, and the classical descriptions of them overlap more than most. In Ashtakoot matching that resemblance shows up as a shared Varna class and friendly sign lords. The trine itself, though, counts as 5/9, and under the Bhakoot rule this app adopted in October 2026 that distance scores nothing. The page below takes the numbers koota by koota and says where the rules come from.
The signs have their own pages: Taurus, Vrishabha rashi and Virgo, Kanya rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains the system and links every pair, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Vrishabh and Kanya: two signs of trade
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 8 says Vrishabh "represents villages and businessmen"; Sl. 13-14 says Kanya "belongs to the business community" and pictures it with grains and fire in its hands. Sl. 5-5.5 lists both among the windy signs, and both are earth. Their lords differ: Shukr (Venus) for Vrishabh, Budh (Mercury) for Kanya. So do their modes, Vrishabh fixed and Kanya dual. Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 adds that each sign is an exaltation: the Moon's in Vrishabh, Mercury's in the first 15 degrees of Kanya. These dignities are not part of the koota calculation.
A Taurus Moon falls in Krittika padas 2-4, Rohini or Mrigashira padas 1-2. A Virgo Moon falls in Uttara Phalguni padas 2-4, Hasta or Chitra padas 1-2. That gives 81 pairings.
The kootas the two signs fix, and their score
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Taurus with Virgo | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 1 | Both Vaishya in the engine's table, so either order scores |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 1 | Adjacent Vashya groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 5 | Venus and Mercury are mutual friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 0 | Virgo 5th from Taurus, Taurus 9th from Virgo |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 | The same in all 81 pairings |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
The signs fix 7 of 15 points, and the order of entry changes nothing. The 81 pairings range from 12 to 26 out of 36 with a median of 23. That median is close to the top: most pairings keep both Nadi and a good share of Gana, and only a few lose both together.
Bhakoot: the 5/9 rule and its history
Counting inclusively, Virgo is the 5th sign from Taurus and Taurus the 9th from Virgo. The engine's Bhakoot rule scores 0 for 5/9 as well as 2/12 and 6/8. Its header records that 5/9 scored the full 7 until October 2026 and was moved to 0 because two published web references agree on it, and that no book in this library contains the Bhakoot rule. Under the earlier rule every pairing on this page would have been 7 points higher, a range of 19 to 33. Descriptions of the trine case vary among practitioners; Bhakoot dosha explains how the term is used.
Graha Maitri: Venus and Mercury
In the engine's reading of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Venus's friends are Mercury and Saturn and Mercury's are the Sun and Venus. The friendship is mutual, so Graha Maitri scores the full 5, a value all the engine's references share.
Varna and Vashya
Since BPHS ties both signs to trade, the engine's Varna table gives both the Vaishya value. Equal values pass in either order, so this pair avoids the order dependence the engine's header flags for other pairs. Varna is a koota name here and nothing more. Vashya places Taurus and Virgo in neighbouring groups: 1 of 2.
What the nakshatras decide
The Yoni koota is 2 for every pairing: the Virgo stars are a Cow, a Buffalo and a Tiger, and none matches or is listed as an enemy of the Sheep and Serpents on the Taurus side. The spread of 14 points comes from Tara, Gana and Nadi.
For Nadi, Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are Aadi and Chitra Madhya; on the Taurus side Krittika and Rohini are Antya and Mrigashira Madhya. The only Nadi clash is Mrigashira with Chitra. For Gana, Uttara Phalguni is Manushya, Hasta Deva and Chitra Rakshasa, against Krittika Rakshasa, Rohini Manushya and Mrigashira Deva, so every Gana score is possible. These are labels for stars and not descriptions of people.
At pada midpoints the engine's lowest pairing is a Taurus Moon in Mrigashira (about 25 degrees) with a Virgo Moon in Chitra (about 25 degrees), 12: Gana 0 for Deva against Rakshasa and Nadi 0 for two Madhya stars. Move the Virgo Moon back into Hasta (about 21 degrees) and pair it with Mrigashira at about 28 degrees, and the total becomes 26, the maximum: Gana 6, Nadi 8, Tara 3. The same Taurus star sits at both ends.
A comparison with the other earth trine from Taurus shows how much the stars matter even between similar sign pairs. Taurus with Capricorn is also 5/9, also has friendly lords (Venus and Saturn), and also shares the Vaishya value, so its sign half is almost the same: 6.5 against 7 here, the half point being Vashya. Yet its engine median is 14.5, not 23. The difference is Nadi. Capricorn's stars include two Antya ones that clash with Krittika and Rohini, whereas Virgo's stars are Aadi and Madhya and clash only with Mrigashira. Two sign pairs that look alike from the sign half end up more than eight points apart at the median because of one star grouping.
That swing is why the star matters. The nakshatra calculator finds it from a birth time, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how it relates to the sign.
Worked example: Taurus 1 degree with Virgo 1 degree
At 1 degree of Taurus the Moon is in Krittika, second pada; at 1 degree of Virgo it is in Uttara Phalguni, second pada. In either order:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: both Vaishya |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable both ways |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Sheep and Cow |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Venus and Mercury, mutual friends |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 5/9 distance |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya and Aadi |
| Total | 23 | 36 |
The example equals the median. Its one empty row is Bhakoot, and the 7 points it loses are exactly the 7 the October 2026 change removed; under the earlier rule this pairing would have been 30. The Gana row is a middle value, Rakshasa against Manushya, on a scale the engine's header calls disputed among its references. Everything else is full or near it. Had the Virgo Moon been a few degrees further on, in Hasta, the Gana row would have read Rakshasa against Deva and the engine would have scored it 0, so the same Taurus Moon can sit either side of the median depending on a few hours of the other person's birth.
A 23 is a description of two Moon positions under a rule set, not a verdict on two people, and this app does not convert it into advice. The Mars check often discussed alongside Guna Milan is explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not; Nadi dosha covers the Mrigashira-Chitra case.
What the texts say
BPHS supplies the descriptions of Vrishabh and Kanya, the two exaltations and the Venus-Mercury friendship. It contains no Ashtakoot rules, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology. No book here comments on Taurus and Virgo Moons as a match, and the 5/9 Bhakoot rule that sets this pair's ceiling comes from web references the engine names.

- What do Taurus and Virgo Moons score in Guna Milan?
- From 12 to 26 out of 36, median 23, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app. The order of entry makes no difference.
- Why is Bhakoot 0 for an earth trine?
- The engine scores the 5/9 distance 0, following two web references it names. It scored 7 before October 2026; no book in this library contains the rule.
- Are Venus and Mercury friends?
- Yes, mutually, in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 as the engine uses it, which gives the full 5 for Graha Maitri.
- Which pairing scores lowest?
- Mrigashira (late Taurus) with Chitra (late Virgo), at 12, losing both Gana and Nadi. The match tool shows where your own stars fall.
- Is the score a recommendation?
- No. It is a traditional rule set applied to two Moon positions. This app does not say whether two people should marry.
