People ask this after several moves, often with some tiredness or self-blame. A chart cannot say why you left each job: pay, a manager, the work, health, family, a layoff or a better offer are the usual reasons, and none of them is in a kundli. No verse describes repeated job changes. What the texts do hold is a reading of the 10th house and its lord, sub-period lists that name an employer on a condition, and a Dasha scheme whose sub-periods change lord often. This page sets those out, gives you a test to run on your own dates, and says where it stops. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about steadiness in work
The 10th house: permanency, and the lord's strength
The house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, the editor's modern material, gives the 10th house "permanency (in service), promotion, advancement, appointment, profession". BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives it "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour". Ch. 21 Sl. 3 says a 10th lord "devoid of strength" brings "obstructions in his work", and Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 says the effects of the 10th prosper if its lord has strength and otherwise decline. Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 3-6 adds that the occupant of the 10th, counted from the Moon or the Ascendant, influences the livelihood by its nature, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 118 reads the 10th lord in the 10th as "skilful in all jobs". None of these speaks of leaving one job for another.
Sub-periods: an employer, on a condition
The word "change" occurs in none of the 288 Antardasha slokas of BPHS Ch. 52-60. The nearest are the slokas that name an employer. For Jupiter in Jupiter's own Dasha, Ch. 56 Sl. 1-3½ lists "extraordinary profits from the employer" if Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign or in a Kendra or Trikona, and Sl. 4-5½ lists "wrath of the employer" if it is debilitated, in a debilitated Navamsa or in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Ch. 59 Sl. 61-62½ names "resignation from the existing post", beside fines and loss of wealth, among the results for Saturn's sub-period in Ketu's Dasha when Saturn is deprived of strength and dignity, and Sl. 63-65 lists "happiness from the employer" when it stands well. Each is one item in a longer list about an employer or a post, not a reading of a pattern of moves.
The nearest line about "many jobs"
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 7-8 says a person born with Mercury in Cancer will be "interested in many jobs", in a trait list that also calls the native fickle-minded, fond of arguments and of bad disposition. This page applies no trait list to anyone's work history, and the line is about Mercury in a sign, not about changing employers. The Bhrigu Sutras' lines for Rahu or Ketu in the 10th (Sutras 25-28), and the other authorities printed beside them, say nothing about work changing. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
Counting the boundaries
The nine Mahadasha periods add up to 120 years and each holds nine sub-periods, so the cycle has 81, about 17.8 months each on average (120 years x 12 months / 81, rounded). They run from 3 months 18 days (the Sun in the Sun's Mahadasha) to 3 years 4 months (Venus in Venus's). So a window of six months either side of every boundary covers at most about two thirds of the calendar (12 / 17.8). Dates of job moves will therefore often sit near some boundary, and a match is weak evidence; this is arithmetic on the cycle, not a statistic about people. Chatterjee (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 308) adds that events are created when the Lagna lord, the 10th lord or the Dasha and Bhukti lords combust, rise, retrograde or change sign, which widens the net again; this app does not apply that rule.
How to check this in your own chart
- List your jobs: the month each began and ended, and in one line what made you leave (pay, manager, the work, a move, health, a better offer).
- Open the Vimshottari dasha calculator and read off every Mahadasha and Antardasha boundary across those years. Mark which of your moves fall within six months of one and which do not, and set the result beside the two-thirds figure above.
- Open the birth chart calculator and note the 10th house, any graha in it (Rahu or Ketu included), and the 10th lord (house lord): sign, house and dignity. An uncertain birth time can move the 10th house (birth time unknown).
- Count the 10th from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign) and open the Dashamsa calculator for the D10 Lagna. Saravali asks for the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon; the app does not rank them, so read both.
- The Career and Money calculator gives a Job versus business read with every factor listed, and dated income windows (periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong). That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse. Its note calls the windows "timing for EFFORT - when to push, negotiate, launch or switch".
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: why you actually left each time.
A sample run
Take 26 July 1991, 22:22, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Pisces at 12.10 degrees, so the 10th is Sagittarius, and Rahu stands in it. Its lord, Jupiter, is in Cancer at 25.94 degrees in the 5th house, exalted, with a Shad Bala of 13.83 of 20, which the app labels Strong. The Moon is in Capricorn, so the 10th from it is Libra, empty, and the D10 Lagna is Pisces. The Rahu Mahadasha runs from 15 February 2009 to 15 February 2027. Its sub-periods since 2017 changed lord on these dates, in Indian time:
| Sub-period | From | To | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 27 January 2017 | 17 August 2019 | 2 years 7 months |
| Ketu | 17 August 2019 | 3 September 2020 | 1 year 1 month |
| Venus | 3 September 2020 | 4 September 2023 | 3 years |
| Sun | 4 September 2023 | 29 July 2024 | 11 months |
| Moon | 29 July 2024 | 27 January 2026 | 1 year 6 months |
| Mars | 27 January 2026 | 15 February 2027 | 1 year 1 month |
Five changes of sub-period lord fell between January 2019 and October 2026. Counting the boundary of 15 February 2027 as well, 1,856 of the 2,852 days from 1 January 2019 to 22 October 2026 (65 per cent) lie within six months of a boundary, so a move on almost any date in those years would sit near one. For the running pair, Ch. 55 Sl. 78-79½ lists "well-being of children and employer" if Mars stands in a Kendra or the 5th, 9th, 3rd or 11th from the Dasha lord; Mars is in the 9th from Rahu, so that is met, and the opposite Sl. 80-82 (the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord) is not. The Career and Money calculator names Jupiter first on the career axis (10th lord, D10 Lagna lord and strongest graha by Shad Bala), Rahu second (it occupies the 10th; with no Shad Bala it is scored on dignity alone) and Mars third (Amatya Karaka). Its Job versus business read is "Both viable" (1.97 for employment against 2.25 for independence); 1.25 of the independence points are Rahu in the 10th, which the app counts as a factor in a suitability tally and not as a reason for changing jobs. It lists the running Mars Antardasha to February 2027 and Jupiter's Mahadasha from then as income windows; its first loss-risk window, from December 2034, is not weighed here. No dosha is flagged and the app flags five yogas; this page weighs none of them. On these factors nothing in the texts explains a run of moves or says that one will follow: someone with this chart might move often or stay for years.
Common misreadings
- "Rahu in the 10th makes people change jobs." The Bhrigu Sutras and the authorities printed beside them say nothing of the kind, and the app counts Rahu there on the independent-work side of a suitability read.
- "My moves match my dasha dates, so the dasha caused them." Matches are expected from the arithmetic above, and no verse says a sub-period moves a person between employers.
- "A pattern of moves is a fault in my chart." Ch. 24 reads most placements of the 10th lord well (Sl. 110-113, 115, 117-119), and no verse describes a pattern of moves. The reasons for leaving a job are in the workplace and in a life, not in a house.
What astrology cannot tell you about changing jobs often
No chart knows why you left each job, whether each move was right, how much your industry churns, or what a layoff, a relocation, an illness or a better offer did. Many people change jobs often for reasons that were sound at the time, and many who stay do so for reasons that are not. A mentor or a careers adviser can look at the pattern with you; a chart cannot. Why is my career stuck and career change timing look at related factors in the same way, and the Career and Money feature page sets out the app's career reading.
What to take care of
The texts name the area plainly: standing with an employer, and money. Ch. 56 Sl. 12-14 lists "loss of cattle and employment" for Saturn's sub-period in Jupiter's Dasha when Saturn is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, combust or in an enemy's sign, and Ch. 60 Sl. 55-57 lists "losses in profession" for Saturn's sub-period in Venus's Dasha when it is debilitated or in the 8th, 11th or 12th. With Ch. 56 Sl. 4-5½ ("wrath of the employer") and Ch. 59 Sl. 61-62½ ("resignation from the existing post"), these are the texts' warnings about work and standing. Each has a counterpart on the opposite placement (Ch. 56 Sl. 1-3½ and 8-11½, Ch. 59 Sl. 63-65, Ch. 60 Sl. 52-54, which lists "conferment of authority by the king"). They are warnings about an area, not a forecast.
- For each job you left, write one line on what made you go (the pay, the manager, the work, the commute, your health, a move, an offer) and look for what repeats. A pattern in the reasons says more than a pattern in the dates.
- Before you resign, have the new offer in writing, and read the notice period, dues and any bond or non-compete clause in both contracts twice.
- Keep some savings for a gap between jobs, and keep a dated record of your results and your references.
- Talk to a mentor or a careers adviser about what the next role must keep and what it must change.
- If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli tell me why I keep changing jobs?
- No. No verse describes repeated job changes. The texts read the 10th house, the strength of its lord and sub-periods that name an employer on a condition, and none says why a particular person moves.
- Does Rahu in the 10th make people change jobs?
- Not in the texts here: the Bhrigu Sutras' lines for Rahu or Ketu in the 10th (Sutras 25-28) say nothing about work changing. The Career and Money calculator counts it on the independent-work side of its Job versus business read.
- Do my job changes match my dasha dates?
- They may. A sub-period changes lord about every 17.8 months on average, so six months either side of each boundary can cover about two thirds of the calendar. A match is weak evidence, and no verse says a sub-period causes a move.
- Is "switch" in the Career and Money calculator a reason to leave?
- No. Its income windows are dasha periods, and its note calls them timing for effort: when to push, negotiate, launch or switch. They begin on dasha boundaries whatever the chart.
- I am tired of starting over. Should I check my chart first?
- No. Talk to someone you trust, such as a mentor, a friend or a careers adviser, first, and if you feel low for more than two weeks call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India). The chart can wait; it cannot assess how you are.
- What if I do not know my birth time?
- The Moon-based steps work from the date alone, though dasha dates can move with the time of day. The Lagna, the 10th house, the Dashamsa and the Career and Money calculator need a reliable time and place.
