Life questions: what a kundli looks at for 38 common questions, and what it cannot answer

The index of the life questions this site answers - marriage, work, money, home, studies, travel, hard periods and feelings - and the one method behind all of them: the house, its lord, the karaka, the dasha and the transit, with what each can and cannot tell you.

In short

A kundli does not answer a life question with a date or a cause. For any question the classical texts read a house, its lord and a fixed significator (karaka), from the Lagna and from the Moon, and look to dasha and transit for when a theme is active, each reading on stated conditions. The 38 pages indexed here apply that method one question at a time and say plainly where it stops.

People bring a chart their real worries: when they will marry, why work has stalled, why they feel low. A kundli cannot answer any of these with a date or a cause. What the classical texts offer is a method: each matter belongs to a house, the house has a lord and a fixed significator, and time is read through dasha periods and transits. This page sets out that method, indexes the 38 questions this site answers with it, and says where it stops.

What the classical texts look at for any life question

The house, its lord and the karaka

BPHS Ch. 11 (Sl. 2-13) lists what each house (bhava) stands for. A house is read through its lord (the house lord) and a fixed significator, its bhava karaka: Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 names them in order from the 1st house as the Sun, Jupiter, Mars, the Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn, and Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 adds what each graha stands for. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 gives the general test: a house prospers when a benefic joins or aspects it, or when its lord is in the 10th or in certain states (avasthas); the verse then lists the opposite cases, such as a house its lord does not aspect, or a lord placed with a malefic or with the lord of a house the translation glosses as evil (the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th and 12th).

Question areaHouse, and what BPHS Ch. 11 listsKaraka (Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34) and other significators
Marriage and partner7th, Sl. 8: "wife, travel, trade"Venus; Ch. 70: "marriage"
Work and position10th, Sl. 11: "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour"Mercury; Ch. 70 gives Saturn "source of maintenance"
Home and property4th, Sl. 5: "conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings"The Moon; Ch. 70 gives Mars "land"
Studies and children5th, Sl. 6: "learning, knowledge, sons"Jupiter; Ch. 70: "learning, son (children)"
Money2nd, Sl. 3: "wealth, grains (food etc.), family"; 11th, Sl. 12: "income, prosperity"; 12th, Sl. 13: "expenses"Jupiter (2nd and 11th); Ch. 70: "wealth and property"
Enemies and disputes6th, Sl. 7: "enemies"Mars
Travel and living abroad3rd, Sl. 4: "journey"; 7th: "travel"; 10th: "living in foreign lands"None for travel itself
Mind and feelings1st, Sl. 2: "happiness, grief and innate nature"; 4th: "happiness"The Moon the mind, Saturn grief (Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13)
Quoted from the English translation; other items in the same verses are left out. The texts were written for a male native and speak of "the wife"; this page reads the 7th as spouse or partner, as the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras does ("partner in life (wife or husband)"), and BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 2 applies the same rules to women. The 6th as "service" or "litigation" and the 12th as "life in a foreign place" come from that list, the editor's modern material, not from BPHS.

The same reading is made twice. Ch. 12 Sl. 11 tells the astrologer to base the effects on the Moon as on the Lagna, and Ch. 66 Sl. 13-15 repeats that the houses are judged from both. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 also gives some matters a divisional chart: the spouse the Navamsa, "power (and position)" the Dashamsa, "sons and grandsons" the Saptamsa and learning the Chaturvimshamsa (D24).

Timing: dasha and transit

The texts time a theme by the Mahadasha and its sub-periods, and every reading is conditional. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 2 separates a Dasha's general effects, from the graha's nature, from its distinctive effects, from its placement. Ch. 48 gives the Dasha of each house lord one line (Sl. 2-8): the 4th lord's brings "acquisition of house and land", the 5th lord's "progress in educational sphere", the 10th lord's "recognition from and awards by the Government", and several others strain or loss. Sl. 1 makes the 10th lord's Dasha depend on where that lord stands; Sl. 5-8 add that a graha's placement at birth and when its Dasha begins both count; Sl. 14-17½ turn the Dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord favourable when it is associated with a trikona lord.

The sub-period chapters (Ch. 52-60) hold most of the specific results, as items in long lists, each on a condition about where the sub-lord stands, counted from the Lagna or from the Dasha lord, and the same sub-period can read either way. In the Moon's Dasha, Venus's sub-period lists "construction of a new house" among other results if Venus is in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, or exalted or in its own sign (Ch. 53 Sl. 53-55), and "loss of landed property" among other losses if Venus is debilitated, combust, or joined or aspected by malefics (Sl. 57-57½). Some slokas add a remedy: the text prescribes propitiation; this app does not.

Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, a modern book among this site's sources, calls dasha and transit the "two limbs" of prediction (p. 307) and writes that results are "modified by transits" (p. 308). The Gochar calculator labels each planet favourable, neutral or testing by its house from your Moon, in this app's table, which its code takes from S. Kannan. Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are later traditions: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention them. This app takes Sade Sati from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 311-313).

None of these readings is a date, and some modern questions have no verse at all: nothing in BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras separates a love marriage from an arranged one, names a government job in the modern sense or gives a rule for when an exam is passed, and BPHS names "debts" only once, under the 10th house (Ch. 11 Sl. 11). The question pages say so rather than fill the gap.

The 38 questions, by kind

When will it happen? Timing questions

These ask for a date; the pages show which periods the texts tie to the matter, and on what conditions.

What does my kundli show about one area of life?

Why is this happening? "Why" questions

These ask for a cause; the texts name factors and periods, never the reason a life went one way.

Feelings

These pages begin with the person, not the chart. They report what the texts say about the Moon (the mind), Saturn (grief) and the 4th house (happiness), and say plainly that a chart cannot tell you why you feel the way you do.

  • Why do I feel low?
  • Why do I feel restless?
  • Why do I feel lonely?
  • Why do I feel angry?
  • Why do I feel confused?
  • Why do I feel detached?
  • Why do I overthink?
  • Why do I feel insecure about money?

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Find the house your question belongs to (the table above, or the question's page). Open the birth chart calculator and note your Lagna; every house is counted from it. The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so it needs a reliable birth time (the Lagna calculator finds it).
  2. Note the house lord's sign, house and the dignity label the calculator gives, and whether it sits in a kendra or trikona, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th, which BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 calls Dusthana.
  3. Note what occupies the house and what joins its lord, benefic or malefic (Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16), then look at the karaka the same way.
  4. Repeat from the Moon: the Moon sign calculator gives its sign from the date alone.
  5. Where the texts assign a divisional chart, open it (linked above); it needs a more exact birth time than the Lagna.
  6. Open the Vimshottari dasha calculator for the running Mahadasha and Antardasha. Is the Mahadasha lord your house's lord? Where did it stand at birth, and when its Dasha began (enter that date in the birth chart calculator and count its sign from your own Lagna)? The question pages quote the sub-period slokas: check whether the condition holds in your chart.
  7. Open the Gochar calculator for Saturn and Jupiter from your Moon, and the Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani calculators for Saturn's named phases.
  8. Weigh it all together, beside what no chart holds: your circumstances, the other people involved and your own choices.

A sample run

Take 13 November 1992, 18:50, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026, and the question "what does my chart say about work?" (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Taurus at 20.76 degrees, so the house is the 10th, Aquarius, which is empty. Its lord, Saturn, is in its own sign, Capricorn, at 18.68 degrees in the 9th house, a trikona. Mercury, the karaka, is in Scorpio in the 7th, in an enemy sign and retrograde. From the Moon, in Gemini, the 10th is Pisces, also empty. The Dashamsa Lagna is Cancer, but Leo for a birth at 18:51, so this sample does not read it. The Saturn Mahadasha runs from 4 September 2026 to 3 September 2045, with Saturn's own sub-period first, to 6 September 2029. Ch. 48 Sl. 1 reads the 10th lord's Dasha as favourable when the lord is in an auspicious house in exaltation or the like, as here (own sign, in a trikona), and when this one began Saturn was in Pisces, the 11th from this Lagna, not the 6th, 8th or 12th that Sl. 5-8 read as adverse. Ch. 57 Sl. 1-3, the sloka for this sub-period, lists royal favour, land and "the position of a Commander of the Army" if Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign, in a kendra or trikona, or a Yog Karak; all three hold, since ruling both the 9th and the 10th makes Saturn a Yog Karak here (Ch. 34 Sl. 13), and the counterpart, Sl. 4-5½, needs Saturn in the 8th or 12th. On 22 October 2026 Saturn, then in Pisces, was in the 10th from the Moon, labelled neutral by the Gochar calculator and "a period of gain" by Chatterjee (p. 311); Jupiter, then in Cancer, was in the 2nd, labelled favourable. No transit was labelled testing that day; the Sun and Rahu were flagged "intensified", none of Saturn's three named phases was running, the app flags no dosha, and the yogas calculator lists nine yogas, Dharma-Karmadhipati among them, none of which this page weighs. The Career and Money calculator names Saturn first on the career axis, reads the chart as "Job-leaning", and lists the Saturn Mahadasha and sub-period as income windows (periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong), with the notes "timing for EFFORT - when to push, negotiate, launch or switch" and "No amount, no percentage and no guarantee of income"; it shows no loss-risk window in this sub-period or the following one. That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse. So the verses read this Dasha favourably for work, and still name no job, promotion or date: the sloka lists the royal favours of another age among many results.

Common misreadings

  • "One factor decides." Every verse cited here is conditional, and the sub-period chapters pair many favourable readings with an adverse one on the opposite placement.
  • "A planet is the cause." Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 and Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 say what each graha stands for; a signification is not a cause.
  • "A Mahadasha is one kind of time." Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 place a graha's effects at the start, middle or end of its Dasha, and the sub-periods, from a few months to about three years long, change the reading within it.

What astrology cannot tell you

No chart can say what another person will decide, whether you will be hired, how a court will rule or what a doctor would find: those depend on people, law, money, health and chance. The question pages never predict death, lifespan, accidents, divorce, infertility, disease, job loss or money loss: where a verse names a loss they report it as the text's reading, and they leave out its lines on death.

Birth data limits everything above: the Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours and a divisional chart far faster, as the sample shows (birth time unknown).

When a question is about health, law, money or how you feel, the useful first step is a person who can act on it: a doctor, a lawyer, a financial adviser, a counsellor or someone you trust. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India). If anyone is hurting or threatening you, call 112.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kundli tell me when something will happen?
No. The classical texts read a house, its lord and its karaka for how well a matter is supported, and list dasha periods in which a result may appear, each on a stated condition. None of them turns that into a date, and this app does not either.
Which house should I look at for my question?
Start from the table above: the 7th for marriage, the 10th for work, the 4th for home and property, the 5th for studies and children, and the 2nd and 11th for money.
Is a hard period caused by a planet?
No. The texts say what a graha stands for and read its periods by where it stands, and they qualify hard readings: Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17½ make a 6th, 8th or 12th lord's Dasha favourable when it is associated with a trikona lord. A period is a range of dates, not a cause. See when will my bad time end.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon-based steps work from the date alone: the chart is cast at local noon and the result says whether the Moon changed sign during the day. The Lagna, every house counted from it and the divisional charts need a reliable time.
Does this app suggest remedies?
No. Some BPHS sub-period slokas add a remedy: the text prescribes propitiation; this app does not. It recommends no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations.
