"Is there a government job in my kundli?" is asked by students, by people between jobs and by families. The honest first answer is that no text on this site's shelf names a combination for one as people mean it today, and none dates a recruitment. What the texts hold is older and wider: the 10th house as "royalty (authority)", the Sun and Moon as the royal grahas, Dasha lists in which the Government appears as a gain on one condition and as a strain on the opposite, and a few Bhrigu lines that name an age. This page sets those readings out, shows how to check them in your own chart, and says where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about a government post
The 10th house, the Sun and the royal court
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th house "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour". Ch. 21 Sl. 4 says that if the lord of the 10th is with a benefic or in an auspicious house one gains "through royal patronage and in business", and the opposite in a contrary situation. Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15 sets out a court of grahas: the Sun and Moon of royal status, Mars the Army chief, Mercury the prince, Jupiter and Venus the ministers, Saturn a servant. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 7 gives the same court, and Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 gives the Sun rule over "kings". These are images of an old kingdom; the verses do not say how to read them for a clerk, an engineer or a teacher in a modern department.
Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 66-80 lists occupations by the sign on the 10th, in archaic terms: "service" and an envoy's post for Aries, "serving the king" for Scorpio, "ministership under a king" for Sagittarius. Leo, the Sun's sign, gets gems, gold, stones, agriculture, cows and grains, and no king. The introduction printed with the Bhrigu Sutras says that in service "Sun shows the administrative head or Government", and the printed house list gives the 10th "Government, high position such as President, Prime Minister or Minister"; both are the editor's modern material, not sutras. Chatterjee (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 24) says the Sun "represents rulers, government and those in high authority".
| Placement | Where | What it reads |
|---|---|---|
| The lord of the 9th in the 10th | BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 106 | A king or one equal to him, a minister or an Army chief |
| The lord of the 11th in the 10th | BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 130 | Honoured by the king |
| The Sun, Moon and Mercury in one house | Saravali Ch. 16 Sl. 2 | "In royal service", among a longer list |
| Mercury in Aries or Scorpio, aspected by Venus | Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 25-30 | "In royal service", fortunate and trustworthy |
| Saturn in the 10th | Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 83 | A minister, a justice, or the leader of a group, city or village |
Royal results are scattered, not tied to one placement: Saravali Ch. 30 also gives a king or an Army chief to the Sun in the 6th (Sl. 7). The Sun in the 10th, often named as the sign of a government post, is not among them: Ch. 30 Sl. 11 reads it as "extremely intelligent, rich, strong" and mentions no king.
Dasha: where the word "Government" is
The word is most at home in the Dasha chapters. BPHS Ch. 47 reads each Mahadasha lord by where that graha stood at birth, and for seven of the nine a favourable line names the Government. For some, the same chapter sets an opposite beside it:
| Mahadasha lord, BPHS Ch. 47 | Favourable if, at birth, the lord is | It names | The opposite line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun, Sl. 7-11 | In its own or exaltation sign, in a Kendra or the 11th, or joined to the lord of the 9th or 10th | "Honours from the Government" | Sl. 12-15: debilitated, weak in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or with malefics: "punishment from Government" |
| Jupiter, Sl. 45-48 | Exalted, in its own sign, Moolatrikona, the 10th, 5th or 9th, or its own or exalted Navamsa | "Recognition by Government" | Sl. 49-51: debilitated, combust, with malefics or in the 6th or 8th: strain early, "recognition by Government" later |
| Saturn, Sl. 53-56 | Exalted, in its own, Moolatrikona or a friendly sign, its own or exalted Navamsa, and the 3rd or 11th | "Recognition by Government" | Sl. 57-60: in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or combust: "displeasure of Government" |
Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 names "recognition from and awards by the Government" in the Dasha of the lord of Karm, the 10th, and asks for the Dasha lord's place at the start of the Dasha as well as at birth; Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 reads it as favourable in the Lagna, in exaltation or in its own sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in debilitation or in an enemy's sign. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 adds that a result falls in the first, middle or last part of the Dasha by which third of its sign (a Dreshkan, Ch. 6 Sl. 7-8) the lord stands in; this app's dasha calculator does not apply that rule.
In Ch. 52-60 the word "government" occurs in 27 of the 288 Antardasha slokas, none of them the Moon's sub-period. Three name it as a gain on a condition about the sub-lord:
| Sub-period (Dasha) | BPHS | Favourable if the sub-lord is | It names |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mars (Moon's) | Ch. 53 Sl. 7-8½ | In a Kendra or Trikona (the sloka does not say counted from what) | "Recognition by the government" |
| Sun (Rahu's) | Ch. 55 Sl. 62-63½ | Joined to, or aspected by, the lord of the 1st, 2nd or 10th | "Assistance by government" |
| Ketu (Mars's) | Ch. 54 Sl. 48-49½ | In a Kendra, Trikona, the 3rd or 11th, or with or aspected by benefics | "Conferment of authority by government" |
Others run the other way: Ch. 59 Sl. 73-74½ names "antagonism with government officials" for Mercury in Ketu's Dasha when it is joined to Saturn, Mars or Rahu in the 6th, 8th or 12th. And three slokas put government duty or authority among the results of an adverse placement: Ch. 58 Sl. 1-3½ ("piety in discharging duties, as a government official", beside loss of wealth, for a debilitated or afflicted Mercury), Ch. 58 Sl. 52-53 ("pressure of hard work, as a government functionary", for Rahu with malefics in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord) and Ch. 55 Sl. 13-14½ ("entrustment of governmental authority", for a debilitated or afflicted Jupiter). In the English printed in the corpus, government work is not always a plain good. The remedies printed beside some slokas are not reproduced: the text prescribes propitiation, and this app does not. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
The nearest the texts come to a date
Only the Bhrigu Sutras name an age for royal favour. Sutras 24-31 say a Jupiter in the 5th makes the native, in his 18th year, "commander of the army by the favour of the king", which the editor reads as an early appointment to "a respectable governmental post". Sutras 9-14 say the same of a Moon in the 2nd, and the editor calls that "difficult to swallow" and "quite impracticable now-a-days". Sutras 41-47 give a Mercury in the 6th, the house the editor's list ties to service, "great favour by the king (Government)" in the 30th year; the bracketed word is the editor's. Sutras 88-95 say a Sun in the 10th, aspected by three planets, makes the native "liked by the king (Government)", and the editor sees "no logic" in that and leaves readers to test it. Each is one line for one placement. No verse in BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras names a recruitment, an examination or a department; mapping royal favour onto a modern department is the reader's step, not the text's.
How to check this in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator and note the 10th house, any graha in it, and the 10th lord (house lord): sign, house and dignity. An uncertain birth time can move the 10th house (birth time unknown).
- Count the 10th from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign) and open the Dashamsa calculator for the D10 Lagna. Saravali asks for the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon; the app does not rank them, so read both.
- The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Read the Mahadasha lord's place at birth against Ch. 47, and the sub-lord's place against its sloka in Ch. 52-60, counted from the Lagna or from the Dasha lord as the sloka says.
- The Career and Money calculator ranks the grahas on your career axis and lists, for each, the fields this app's own table gives it (the Sun's include government and public administration; no verse lists fields). It also gives a Job versus business read and dated income windows: periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong. That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse.
- The Gochar calculator shows Saturn's and Jupiter's house from your Moon with the label from this app's table, which its code takes from S. Kannan; the Sade Sati calculator shows whether Sade Sati is running.
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: the notification, the vacancies, the syllabus, your preparation and the result.
A sample run
Take 7 April 2003, 22:38, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Scorpio at 14.99 degrees, so the 10th is Leo, empty. Its lord, the Sun, stands in Pisces at 23.57 degrees in the 5th house, labelled neutral. The Moon is in Taurus, so the 10th from it is Aquarius, which holds Venus. The Jupiter Mahadasha runs from 5 December 2025 to 5 December 2041, with Jupiter's own Antardasha to 24 January 2028. Jupiter stands in Cancer at 14.19 degrees, exalted, in the 9th house. Of the conditions Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 lists for "recognition by Government", two are met, exaltation and the 9th house; its Navamsa is Scorpio, neither its own nor its exaltation Navamsa. None of the opposite conditions of Sl. 49-51 holds. For the sub-period, Ch. 56 Sl. 1-3½ asks for exaltation or a Kendra or Trikona and is met, and the opposite Sl. 4-5½ is not; it lists "revered by the king" and "extraordinary profits from the employer" among many results, and says nothing of a post or a date. Saturn, then in Pisces, was in the 11th from the Moon, labelled favourable; Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani were not running, and of the other eight transits one was labelled testing and two carried the app's "intensified" mark. The app flags Kendradhipathya Dosha and Mangal Dosha, both Mild, and seven yogas; this page weighs none of these. The Career and Money calculator names the Moon first on the career axis, the Sun second and Mars third; under the Sun it lists "Government and public administration" among six fields. Its Job versus business read is "Both viable" (2.61 for employment against 1.25), which does not separate a government employer from a private one. Jupiter's Mahadasha and Antardasha are strong income windows; its first loss-risk window, Mercury's Antardasha from August 2030 to November 2032, is not weighed here. On these factors the favourable conditions are met and the adverse ones are not; none of that dates a post or says that one is held.
Common misreadings
- "The Sun in the 10th means a government job." Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 11 does not say it, and the one Bhrigu line linking the Sun in the 10th to the king asks for three aspecting planets and is doubted by its own editor.
- "Saturn is service, so Saturn is government." The court verse calls Saturn a servant, not an officer, and the Career and Money calculator's field list for Saturn does not include government.
- "The Dasha of my 10th lord is when the post comes." Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads recognition and awards in that Dasha, not an appointment, and makes the result depend on where the lord stands.
What astrology cannot tell you about a government job
No chart knows the notification, the number of vacancies, the syllabus, the cut-off, the age limit or the reservation rules, your preparation, or the result. A recruitment is decided by an examination, a merit list and a calendar that a kundli does not contain. For the examination itself see exam success in a kundli. What Chatterjee writes about Sade Sati at the start of a career is set out on why is my career stuck. If waiting for a result is wearing on you, speak to someone you trust. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India). The Career and Money feature page sets out the app's career reading.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli show a government job?
- No text on this site's shelf names a combination for one as people mean it today. BPHS and Saravali read the 10th house, the Sun and the royal court, and the Dasha lists name "Government" on conditions about the Dasha lord or sub-lord; only a few Bhrigu lines name an age, and the editor doubts one.
- Which graha stands for the government?
- The Sun and Moon have royal status (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15), and the Sun rules "kings" (Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13). Mars is the Army chief, Jupiter and Venus the ministers, Saturn a servant. None is a post.
- Does the Career and Money calculator say I will get a government job?
- No. For each graha on your career axis it lists fields from this app's own table, and its windows are, in its own words, timing for effort.
- Is the Sun's Dasha the time for a government job?
- Not in the text. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 names honours from the Government in the Sun's Dasha only if the Sun stood well at birth, and Sl. 12-15 names the opposite if it did not.
- What if I do not know my birth time?
- The Moon-based steps work from the date alone. The Lagna, the 10th house, the Dashamsa and the Career and Money calculator need a reliable time and place.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
