Exam success in a kundli: what the classical texts read for learning, and what no chart can predict

A kundli does not hold an exam result or its date. What BPHS, Saravali and one modern book actually read for learning: the 5th house, its lord, Jupiter, the D24 chart, the dasha lists, and how to check each in your own chart.

In short

A kundli does not hold an exam result or a date for one. The classical texts read learning from the 5th house, its lord and Jupiter, name the Chaturvimshamsa (D24) for it, and BPHS lists progress in education among the results of the 5th and 9th lords' Dashas and of a few sub-periods, each weighed by placement. Nothing in this site's sources dates an exam.

"Will I pass?" is a fair question before a board exam, an entrance test or a semester paper, and a kundli cannot answer it: it holds no result and no date. The classical texts read learning from the 5th house, its lord and Jupiter, name a divisional chart for it, and list Dasha periods in which progress in education appears among many other results. This page sets those readings out, shows how to check them in your own chart, and says where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.

What the classical texts say about learning and exams

The house, the significator and the D24

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 gives the 5th house "learning, knowledge", with sons, sacred spells and authority beside them. No other house in that chapter lists learning: the 4th (Sl. 5) has none, and the 1st (Sl. 2) has "intellect" among body and temperament. The 4th as "academic education" and the 9th as "higher education" appear in the modern house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, not in BPHS. The verses that work out the 5th house's effects (BPHS Ch. 16, Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 onward) turn to children, not study.

The fixed significator, or karaka, of the 5th is Jupiter (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34). Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 says Jupiter "confers Knowledge and happiness", Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 gives it "learning", and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 1-2 "intelligence", adding that a strong significator gives a strong result and a weak one a meagre result. Mercury is different. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 calls it the "speech-giver" and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 1-2 gives it "speech (voice)", in the same lists that give Jupiter knowledge and intelligence. Saravali's longer list of rulerships (Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13) gives Mercury "Veda, writing" and "expertise" among many things, and puts "education" under Venus. Mercury as "the chief governor for education" comes from the editor's introduction printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, modern material. Its own sub-period does list learning (below).

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "learning" to the Chaturvimshamsa (D24), one clause in its list of sixteen divisions, and gives no method for reading that chart. Ch. 33 Sl. 85-92½ reads the kind of learning (a grammarian, a mathematician, a poet) from grahas in the Karakamsa and the 5th from it. Ch. 24 Sl. 49-60 reads the 5th lord in each of the twelve houses, mostly for children; a few name learning, such as Sl. 59, where a 5th lord in the 11th makes the native "learned" and "an author of treatises".

Timing: the Dashas of the 5th and 9th lords, and a few sub-periods

BPHS Ch. 48 gives the Dasha of each house lord a one-line reading. Sl. 2-4 read "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children" in the Dasha of the 5th lord, and Sl. 5-8 "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth" in the Dasha of the 9th lord. Sl. 5-8 add that a graha in the 6th, 8th or 12th when its Dasha begins "yields only adverse results", and that its placement at birth and at the start both count; this app shows only the birth placement. A lord of two houses carries both lines. Neither verse names an exam, a pass or a year.

The sub-period chapters (Ch. 52-60) mention learning or study in a few slokas, as one item in long lists and on a condition about where the sub-lord stands. Three examples:

Sub-period lord (Dasha lord)BPHSThe sloka asks the sub-lord to beWhat it lists, among much else
Mercury (Mercury)Ch. 58 Sl. 1-3½Exalted, or otherwise well placed"Learning", "success in the educational sphere", fame
Moon (Mercury)Ch. 58 Sl. 26-29½In a Kendra or Trikona from the Lagna; or exalted or in own sign, joined or aspected by Jupiter; or a yogakaraka"Study of Shastras", beside marriage and a new house
Venus (Saturn)Ch. 57 Sl. 30-31½In the 9th, the 11th or a Kendra from the Dasha lord"Creation of interest in the study of Shastras", poetry
Three of the slokas that name learning or study; Ch. 58 Sl. 6-8½ (Ketu in Mercury's Dasha) is another. None mentions an examination.

Counterparts read other placements the other way: Ch. 58 Sl. 1-3½ for a debilitated Mercury, or one in the 6th, 8th or 12th or with malefics, and Ch. 57 Sl. 32-34 for Venus 6th, 8th or 12th from Saturn list losses, friction and ailments; neither is a diagnosis. Some conditions count from the Dasha lord, not the Lagna. The remedies printed beside some slokas are not reproduced: the text prescribes propitiation, and this app does not.

Modern authors, and what no source gives

Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, a modern book among this site's sources, carries Dasha reading into the divisional charts (pp. 126-127): the period of a planet debilitated in the D24 brings "dislocation or obstacles in education", a planet in the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th from a divisional Lagna gives bad results in its period, and one in an angle, a trine or the 11th good ones. He also writes (pp. 30-31) that planets with directional strength (Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st house, the Moon and Venus in the 4th, Saturn in the 7th, the Sun and Mars in the 10th) "grant the students easy success in their examinations". These are one modern author's rules, not verses. The Bhrigu Sutras tie learning to an age once: the Sun in the 10th brings educational achievement "by his 18th year" (Sutras 88-95). No source here dates an exam or says how a paper will go.

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Open the birth chart calculator and note your Lagna, the 5th house and any graha in it, then the 5th lord (house lord): its sign, house and dignity, and what Ch. 24 Sl. 49-60 says of its house. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can move the 5th house (birth time unknown).
  2. Note Jupiter and Mercury: sign, house and dignity. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5): does it aspect your 5th?
  3. Count the 5th from the Moon as well (BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11); the Moon sign calculator gives the sign.
  4. Open the Chaturvimshamsa calculator. It needs a birth time, as the D24 Lagna changes about every five minutes. Note the D24 Lagna, the houses of the running Dasha lords from it, and any graha in its debilitation sign (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50: Sun Libra, Moon Scorpio, Mars Cancer, Mercury Pisces, Jupiter Capricorn, Venus Virgo, Saturn Aries). Chatterjee's rules use these; BPHS gives none.
  5. Open the Vimshottari dasha calculator for the running Mahadasha and Antardasha. Is the Mahadasha lord the 5th or 9th lord, and what else does it rule? Is the sub-lord in the table above, standing where its sloka asks?
  6. The yogas calculator lists your chart's named combinations. A few have verses naming learning: BPHS Ch. 38 Sl. 2-3 gives Vasi Yoga "fame, learning and strength" when benefics form it (Sl. 4). None is an exam yoga.
  7. The Sade Sati calculator shows whether Saturn is passing over your Moon, and the Gochar calculator shows Saturn's house from the Moon with the app's label.
  8. Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: the syllabus, your preparation, the paper and the marking.

A sample run

Take 5 April 2006, 19:46, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Sade Sati calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Libra at 6.65 degrees, so the 5th is Aquarius, holding Mercury, in an enemy sign, and Venus, neutral. Its lord, Saturn, which also rules the 4th, stands in Cancer in the 10th house, labelled neutral; Ch. 24 Sl. 58 gives that placement a Raj Yoga and fame, not learning. Jupiter, retrograde in the Lagna in an enemy sign, aspects the 5th and the Moon, and the Moon, in Gemini, has Jupiter in the 5th sign from it. The Saturn Mahadasha runs from 6 December 2018 to 5 December 2037, with Venus's Antardasha from 26 September 2025 to 26 November 2028. As 5th lord, Saturn has a Dasha Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 reads as progress in education, and as 4th lord one of house and land. The "study of Shastras" sloka for Venus in Saturn's Dasha (Ch. 57 Sl. 30-31½) needs Venus 9th, 11th or in a Kendra from Saturn; it is 8th, for which Sl. 32-34 lists ailments, while Sl. 24-27½, counted from the Lagna (Venus in a trine, with Mercury, aspected by Jupiter), lists wealth, honours and good health. The D24 Lagna is Capricorn only from 19:45 to 19:49. At 19:46 Saturn is in its 3rd and Venus in its 12th, which Chatterjee reads as adverse; at 19:44 the D24 Lagna is Sagittarius and both are in angles, which he reads as favourable. Mercury is in Pisces, its debilitation sign, in the D24; its periods are not running. Jupiter in the 1st is where Chatterjee places its directional strength. The yogas calculator lists Vasi Yoga, formed by Mercury and Venus, with Sunapha, Pasa and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga; no dosha is flagged. Saturn, then in Pisces, was 10th from the Moon, labelled neutral (Chatterjee, p. 311: "a period of gain"); Sade Sati was not running, and no transit was labelled testing that day. None of this says how this person's exams will go.

Common misreadings

  • "Mercury is the planet of exams." The texts' significator of learning is Jupiter; Mercury as the governor of education is from the modern material printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, and its own sub-period lists learning only when it is well placed.
  • "The 5th lord's Dasha guarantees good marks." Ch. 48 reads progress in education in that Dasha and weighs the lord's placement; no verse sets a mark or a pass.

What astrology cannot tell you about an exam

No chart knows the syllabus, how much you have prepared, the paper, the marking, the cut-off, the number of seats or how you will feel on the day. A favourable 5th house makes none of these easier, and a testing period makes none of them harder. The texts read learning as a quality and a trend; they do not grade a paper. This app gives no pass, rank or date.

Birth data limits the whole exercise: a time rounded to the nearest quarter-hour cannot settle a D24 reading, and an uncertain one can move the 5th house itself.

If exam pressure or a result is weighing on you, talk to a parent, a teacher, a friend or a counsellor. If you are thinking of harming yourself or are in danger right now, call 112 (emergency) or Tele-MANAS 14416 now, and tell someone near you. Why are my studies not progressing and when will I get a job look at neighbouring questions in the same way.

What to take care of

Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are later traditions: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention them. This app takes Sade Sati from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 311-313). Chatterjee (p. 311) writes that when Sade Sati falls during studies the native "will not be able to concentrate on studies", with "distraction, failure, discontinuation, loss of memory", unless Saturn is a yogakaraka for the chart, well placed, with association or aspect of benefic planets: one modern author's reading of a transit, not a medical statement. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events. He also reads the period of a planet debilitated in the D24 as one of obstacles in education (p. 126). The area named is study: concentration and continuity.

  • Plan revision backwards from the exam date, and start early.
  • Keep sleep, meals and some daily movement steady in exam season.
  • If you are falling behind, tell a teacher or a senior early and ask what to cover first.
  • Do not skip, postpone or choose an exam because of a transit or a Dasha; preparation is what the paper marks.
  • Keep a second option in view, such as another attempt, course or college, so that one paper does not carry everything.
  • If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).

Frequently asked questions

Can a kundli tell me if I will pass my exam?
No. The classical texts read learning from the 5th house, its lord, Jupiter and the D24, and list Dasha periods in which progress in education appears among other results, each on a condition. None of them dates an exam or predicts a result.
Which house shows education?
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 lists learning and knowledge under the 5th, and no other house in that chapter lists learning. The modern house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras adds the 4th ("academic education") and the 9th ("higher education").
Will Sade Sati make me fail?
BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention Sade Sati. Chatterjee, a modern author, reads Sade Sati during studies as a time of poor concentration, distraction, failure and discontinuation, unless Saturn is a yogakaraka for the chart, well placed, with benefic association or aspect. That is one author's reading of a transit, not a result; the paper marks what you write.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The dasha, Sade Sati and Gochar calculators run from the date alone, cast at local noon; the Moon, which sets the Dasha dates, moves about 13 degrees a day. The Lagna, the 5th house, the yogas and the D24 need a reliable time, the D24 to within a few minutes.
Does this app predict exam results?
No. It computes the factors on this page from your birth details and shows them with their sources. It gives no pass, rank, mark or date.
