Foreign travel in a kundli: what the classical texts look at, and what they cannot date

A kundli does not date a trip abroad. What BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras read for journeys and foreign lands - the 3rd, 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th houses and the dasha lists - what one modern author adds, and how to check it in your own chart.

In short

A kundli does not date a journey abroad. BPHS gives "journey" to the 3rd house, "travel" to the 7th, pilgrimage to the 9th and "living in foreign lands" to the 10th; the 12th as the house of foreign life comes from a modern list. Its sub-period chapters name foreign journeys among many results, more often on adverse conditions than favourable ones, and no verse names a period in which a trip happens.

"Will I go abroad, and when?" is asked by students hoping to study overseas, by people weighing a job in another country, and by families with someone already away. A kundli does not hold a date for a journey. This page sets out what the classical texts read for travel and foreign lands, shows how to check the same factors in your own chart, and says plainly where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.

What the classical texts say about foreign travel

The houses: the 3rd, 7th, 9th and 10th, and what BPHS says of the 12th

BPHS Ch. 11 names travel under four houses. Sl. 4 lists "journey" in the 3rd house with valour, servants, siblings and initiatory instruction. Sl. 8 gives the 7th "Wife, travel, trade". Sl. 10 gives the 9th "visits to shrines", beside fortune and religion. Sl. 11 gives the 10th "living in foreign lands", beside authority, livelihood, honour and the father. BPHS's own list for the 12th house (Sl. 13) names expenses and the history of enemies among its matters, and no travel.

The 12th enters in its own chapter. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11 says one "will wander from country to country" if the 12th house and its lord are with malefics and the lord exchanges aspects with malefics; with benefics in the same positions one "will move in his own country" (Sl. 12). The 12th as the house of foreign life comes from the modern house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, which gives it "going to far away places" and "life in a foreign place", and gives the 9th "long journeys, voyage, air travel, higher education, foreign travel".

Saravali Ch. 32 reads the 9th, counted from the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon (Sl. 2): occupied or aspected by its own lord, the native "will make his fortunes in his own country"; joined or aspected by other planets, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere" (Sl. 4). It speaks of where fortune comes, not of a journey. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7 and 18 add Rajju Yoga, all seven grahas in movable signs, whose native is "fond of wandering" and "will earn in foreign countries". The Bhrigu Sutras give a journey "far away from his native land" in the 25th year for the Sun in the 7th (Sutras 69-74), "many travels" in the 15th year for the Moon in the 1st (Sutras 1-8) and travels in the 38th year for Jupiter in the 3rd (Sutras 13-18), each one line among many. BPHS names no significator (karaka) of travel.

Dasha: foreign journeys in a long list, mostly among adverse results

BPHS Ch. 48, which reads the Dasha of each house lord, names travel for none of them. Ch. 47 ties foreign gains in a Mahadasha to placement: in Rahu's Dasha, "recognition from Government of foreign countries" if Rahu is exalted and the like, and wealth "through a foreign Government" if Rahu, joined or aspected by benefics and in a benefic sign, is in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 10th or 11th (Sl. 34-39½); gain from foreign countries for a strong, well-placed Mars (Sl. 27-32) or Ketu (Sl. 72-77).

The sub-period chapters (Ch. 52-60) mention foreign lands or the homeland in 35 of their 288 slokas, for all nine sub-lords. Most list the journey among adverse results, when the sub-lord is 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord, debilitated, combust or with malefics: "going away from the homeland", "wanderings in foreign lands". A smaller group list journeys, recognition abroad or a safe return home among favourable results. Four examples:

A modern author on foreign travel

Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, a modern book among this site's sources, gives foreign travel a chapter (Ch. 3, from p. 85). He reads the 3rd for short journeys, the 9th for long-distance travel, the 7th for long inland journeys and travel for trade, and the 12th for expenses and separation from family (p. 86). He collects two placement rules: the 12th lord in the 9th gives many foreign journeys (credited to R. Santhanam), and Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th takes the native abroad (credited to Jataka Chintamani; p. 88). For timing he names "the dasa (vimsottari) of the 12th lord or Rahu", or sub-periods of planets associated with them, and warns that "adverse dasas and transit periods, even if indicative of foreign travel, indicate problems and frustrating results overseas" (p. 91). The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events. These are one modern author's rules, and the books he credits are not among this site's sources. His rules for living abroad are left to the settling abroad page.

No sloka or sutra in BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras puts foreign travel in the 12th house's own list, and none names a period in which a journey abroad happens.

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Open the birth chart calculator and note the 3rd, 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th houses with any graha in them, and the lords of the 9th and the 12th (house lord): sign, house, dignity. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can move every house (birth time unknown).
  2. Check the 12th and its lord against BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12. Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and a waning Moon as malefics, and Mercury when it joins one. A chart can match neither verse.
  3. Count the 9th from the Lagna and from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign): is it occupied or aspected by its own lord or by other planets (Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2-4)?
  4. The Yogas calculator shows Rajju Yoga if it is present. Note any of the three Bhrigu placements above.
  5. The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Read the Mahadasha's verse in Ch. 47, then the sub-period's slokas, and check each condition as the sloka counts it.
  6. The Gochar calculator labels each planet's transit from your Moon, in this app's table, which its code takes from S. Kannan. No verse here names a transit for travel; Chatterjee asks only that periods and transits not be adverse.
  7. Weigh the findings together: each verse is conditional, and the modern rules are one author's.

A sample run

Take 19 February 1993, 00:19, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha and Gochar calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Libra at 26.74 degrees. The 3rd, 7th and 10th are empty; the 9th, Gemini, holds Mars, unaspected; the 12th, Virgo, holds Jupiter, aspected by Mars and Venus. Mercury rules the 9th and the 12th and stands in Aquarius in the 5th house (see also the 9th lord in the 5th) with the Sun, in a friendly sign. Joined to the Sun, Mercury counts as a malefic (Ch. 3 Sl. 11), but the 12th holds a benefic and Mercury neither casts an aspect on a planet nor receives one, so neither Ch. 23 Sl. 11 nor Sl. 12 is met. Other planets, not Mercury, occupy the 9th from the Lagna (Mars) and the 9th from the Moon in Capricorn (Virgo, with Jupiter), so Saravali's Sl. 4 reads fortune as dawning "elsewhere" from both. The Yogas calculator shows no Rajju Yoga (its seven other yogas are not weighed here), the app flags no dosha, and none of the Bhrigu placements is present.

The dasha calculator shows Rahu's Mahadasha from 23 November 2011 to 22 November 2029, with the Sun's Antardasha from 11 June 2026 to 6 May 2027. Rahu stands in Scorpio in the 2nd, aspected only by Ketu, so the foreign lines of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½ do not apply. The Sun is 4th from Rahu, a Kendra, so Ch. 55 Sl. 66 is met: it lists well-being and "recognition from kings in foreign countries" (Sl. 60-61½, also met, lists cordial relations with the king and gains). The sloka that names journeys abroad in this sub-period, Sl. 62-63½, needs the Sun joined or aspected by the lord of the 1st, 2nd or 10th; only Mercury joins it, so that one is not met. Chatterjee's p. 91 rule picks out this period because it is Rahu's and the Sun is joined to the 12th lord; his two p. 88 rules do not apply. The Gochar calculator that day showed Saturn, then in Pisces, 3rd from the Moon, Jupiter, in Cancer, 7th, and Rahu, in Aquarius, 2nd, all labelled favourable; of the other six it labelled one testing (Ketu, 8th) and flagged Mars "intensified", which this page does not weigh. Recognition abroad is among the results one sloka lists for this period; nothing in the texts or the app says this person travels, or when.

Common misreadings

  • "The 12th house is the house of foreign travel." BPHS's list for the 12th has no travel; its 12th-house chapter gives wandering "from country to country" only under malefic influence, and "life in a foreign place" comes from the modern list.
  • "Rahu's Mahadasha takes you abroad." That is Chatterjee's modern rule. BPHS ties foreign recognition in Rahu's Dasha to Rahu's placement (Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½).
  • "A journey in the chart means settling abroad." BPHS keeps journeys and pilgrimage (the 3rd, 7th and 9th) apart from "living in foreign lands" (the 10th); settling abroad in a kundli looks at the second.
  • "A verse about foreign lands is good news." Most sub-period slokas that mention foreign lands list them among adverse results.

What astrology cannot tell you about travel abroad

No chart knows the visa rules of the country you want to go to, the state of your documents, an admission or a job offer, the cost, your family's needs or what is happening in the world. A favourable verse does not get a visa approved, and an adverse one does not cancel a sensible trip. For a visa, rely on the embassy or consulate of the country concerned; for a job or a course abroad, on the employer or institution, in writing; for travel health, on a doctor.

Settling abroad and career change timing look at related factors in the same way, and the timing feature page explains how the app computes dasha periods.

What to take care of

The texts do flag travel. Several sub-period slokas name dangers on the road when their conditions are met: "danger of thieves during travelling" in Saturn's sub-period of Ketu's Dasha when Saturn lacks strength and dignity (Ch. 59 Sl. 61-62½), attacks by thieves "during travels" in Mercury's sub-period of Mars's Dasha when Mercury is 6th, 8th or 12th from Mars or with malefics (Ch. 54 Sl. 44-45½), and "troubles in foreign journey" in the Sun's sub-period of the Moon's Dasha when the Sun is 8th or 12th from the Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 68-70). Chatterjee (p. 91) reads adverse periods as bringing problems overseas. The areas named are travel, money and safety on the way: reasons for ordinary care, not a forecast.

  • Before paying an agent, a recruiter or a college, check in writing that the offer or admission is genuine, and keep receipts.
  • Keep copies of your passport, visa and tickets apart from the originals, and leave your plans with someone at home.
  • Do not take large unsecured loans to pay for a move or a course abroad; write down the full cost first.
  • Get any health check you have been postponing before a long trip, and see a doctor for any symptom; this is not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kundli tell me when I will go abroad?
No. The texts name the houses tied to journeys and foreign residence and list sub-periods in which a foreign journey appears among many results, each on a condition. None dates a trip.
Which house shows foreign travel?
BPHS Ch. 11 gives "journey" to the 3rd, "travel" to the 7th, "visits to shrines" to the 9th and "living in foreign lands" to the 10th. Foreign life for the 12th is from the modern house list. See the 9th house and 12th house pages.
Does Rahu mean foreign travel?
Not by itself. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½ reads recognition from foreign governments in Rahu's Dasha only for a well-placed Rahu. The rules that Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th takes one abroad, and that Rahu's period brings journeys, are modern ones collected by Chatterjee (pp. 88 and 91).
Is the 12th lord's Dasha the time to go abroad?
That is Chatterjee's modern rule (p. 91). BPHS Ch. 48, which reads each house lord's Dasha, names no travel for the 12th lord or any other.
Should I cancel a trip because a period is called adverse?
No chart can make that decision. The adverse slokas name things like thieves on the road; the sensible response is ordinary care with documents, money and health. The decision rests on your purpose, the visa, the cost and your safety.
