A change of work is a decision, and a kundli does not make decisions or hold the date of one. What the texts hold is a way of reading the house of work, the period that is running and the transits of Saturn and Jupiter, and none of them says when to resign. This page sets those readings out, shows how to check them in your own chart, explains what this app's dated windows are, and says where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about timing a change of work
The house, the Dashamsa and the period
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th house "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour", and Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 reads "power (and position)" from the Dashamsa. Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 says the effects of the 10th, counted from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon, prosper if its lord has strength and otherwise decline, and Sl. 65 reads livelihood from the 10th from the Moon or the Ascendant, whichever is stronger. For timing, BPHS reads a Dasha by where its lord stood at birth and at the start of the Dasha (Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8). Ch. 48 Sl. 1 calls the Dasha of the lord of Karm, the 10th, favourable if that lord is in an auspicious house, exalted and the like, and adverse if it is debilitated in an inauspicious one. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 adds that a result falls in the first, middle or last part of the Dasha by which third of its sign (a Dreshkan, Ch. 6 Sl. 7-8) the lord stands in; this app's dasha calculator does not apply that rule. The Dasha changes lord on a date, but no verse says that work changes on it.
Sub-periods: an employer, and once a resignation
In the 288 Antardasha slokas of Ch. 52-60 the word "change" never occurs, and "profession" occurs three times. The nearest are the slokas that name an employer on a condition about the sub-lord. For Jupiter in Jupiter's own Dasha, Ch. 56 Sl. 1-3½ lists "extraordinary profits from the employer" if Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign or in a Kendra or Trikona, and Sl. 4-5½ lists "wrath of the employer" if it is debilitated, in a debilitated Navamsa or in the 6th, 8th or 12th. One sloka names resigning: Ch. 59 Sl. 61-62½ lists "resignation from the existing post", beside fines and loss of wealth, among the results for Saturn's sub-period in Ketu's Dasha when Saturn is deprived of strength and dignity; Sl. 63-65 lists "success in all ventures" and "happiness from the employer" when Saturn stands in Libra, in its own sign, in an auspicious Navamsa or with a benefic in a Kendra, Trikona or the 3rd, among other places. The remedies printed beside some slokas are not reproduced: the text prescribes propitiation, and this app does not.
Modern lists, and the transits
Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, a modern book, lists on p. 122 rules for good periods, several credited to articles in The Times of Astrology. Item 15 says the sub-period of a planet in the 6th house "will bring changes in professional condition good or bad", depending on its association, aspect and placement; item 14 says that if the 12th lord is in the 9th or 3rd house or aspects the 9th, the native will work abroad in that lord's Dasha. On p. 308 he writes that events manifest largely in Dasha and Bhukti periods but that "actual results are modified by transits", and that events are created when the Lagna lord, the 10th lord or the Dasha and Bhukti lords combust, rise, retrograde or change sign. On p. 310 he says that when Jupiter influences the natal Saturn, the natal Sun or the 10th house it should be a period of gain, and on p. 311 that Saturn arriving in the 10th from the Moon is a period of gain and good in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. The book does not define "influences", and none of this is a verse.
This app's Gochar table, which its code takes from S. Kannan, labels Jupiter favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th from the Moon (Chatterjee's list for Jupiter on p. 310 names the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th), and Saturn favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th, testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th, and neutral in the 10th.
Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are later traditions: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention them. This app takes Sade Sati from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 311-313). Chatterjee (p. 311) writes that its effect depends on the stage of life at which it falls, and that at the beginning of a career it "will spoil the career or profession", may delay or deny promotion, and may bring a transfer to a place one may not like, financial loss and quarrels with superiors or subordinates: one modern author's reading of a transit, which he does not apply where Saturn is a yogakaraka for the chart, well placed, with benefic association or aspect. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
How to check this in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator and note the 10th house, any graha in it, and the 10th lord (house lord): sign, house and dignity. Note also the 6th house and the 12th lord, which Chatterjee's items use. An uncertain birth time can move the 10th house (birth time unknown).
- Count the 10th from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign) and open the Dashamsa calculator for the D10 Lagna. Saravali asks for the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon; the app does not rank them, so read both.
- The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with the dates each ends and the lords that follow. Note where the running lords stood at birth.
- The Career and Money calculator gives a Job versus business read, "Job-leaning", "Business-leaning" or "Both viable", and lists dated income windows (periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong) and loss-risk windows. Its note calls the income windows "timing for EFFORT - when to push, negotiate, launch or switch". That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse. Windows are dasha periods, so each starts on a dasha boundary.
- The Gochar calculator shows Jupiter's and Saturn's house from your Moon with the app's labels, and the Sade Sati calculator shows whether Sade Sati is running.
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: your savings, the notice period, the offers on the table and the state of your field.
A sample run
Take 9 August 1989, 11:57, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Libra at 12.69 degrees, so the 10th is Cancer, and the Sun stands in it at 22.95 degrees, in a friendly sign. Its lord, the Moon, is in the Lagna, so the 10th from the Moon is the same Cancer. The D10 Lagna is Aquarius. The Saturn Mahadasha runs from 27 June 2008 to 28 June 2027, with Jupiter's Antardasha from 15 December 2024 to the same day; Mercury's Mahadasha follows, to 27 June 2044. Saturn is retrograde at birth, in an enemy sign in the 3rd house; the app marks this, and its dasha calculator applies no retrograde rule. Chatterjee's items 14 and 15 do not apply: no graha stands in the 6th, and the 12th lord, Mercury, is in the 11th and aspects the 5th. The Career and Money calculator names the Sun first on the career axis (it sits in the 10th, is the Amatya Karaka and is the strongest graha by Shad Bala), the Moon second and Saturn third. Its Job versus business read is "Business-leaning" (4.25 against 1.5): the Sun outweighs Saturn in Shad Bala, the Sun as 11th lord stands in the 10th, and Mars, the 7th lord, is weak and combust. It lists as income windows Mercury's Mahadasha from June 2027 (supportive), Mercury's own Antardasha from June 2027 to November 2029 and Ketu's from November 2029 to November 2030, and no loss-risk window. The first window begins on 28 June 2027, the day Saturn gives way to Mercury, because every window begins on a boundary; it is timing for effort, not a reason to resign that day. Jupiter, then in Cancer at 28.84 degrees, was in the 10th from the Moon, which the Gochar calculator labels favourable though Chatterjee's list for Jupiter omits the 10th; Saturn, in Pisces, was in the 6th, favourable in both. Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani were not running, no dosha is flagged, and of the other seven transits three were labelled testing (the Sun, Mercury and Venus, each in the Moon's sign). The app also flags four yogas. On these factors nothing dates a change of work; the one date in view is the arithmetic of the dasha.
Common misreadings
- "A new Mahadasha means a new career." The Dasha lord changes on a date, but BPHS reads the new lord by where it stood at birth (Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6) and gives no rule that work changes then.
- "An income window is the time to resign." The calculator's note calls windows timing for effort, and its disclaimer says no amount, percentage or guarantee of income is stated or implied. They are dasha periods, and each begins on a boundary whatever the chart.
- "Jupiter in the 10th from the Moon means move now." Chatterjee says a period of gain without defining "influences", and the app's table says favourable. Neither says to leave a job.
What astrology cannot tell you about changing careers
No chart knows your savings, your notice period, your health, the offers on the table, your family's needs, the hiring in the field you want, or whether the work you would leave is the thing that troubles you. The Job versus business read describes suitability, not whether a change will work out, and a window or a transit is no reason to resign on a given day. For a decision of this size, a written offer, the notice period and dues in your contract, and a talk with a mentor or a careers adviser tell you more than a chart can. If waiting or deciding is wearing on you, speak to someone you trust. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India). Why do I keep changing jobs and when will I get promoted look at related factors in the same way, and the Career and Money feature page sets out the app's career reading.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli tell me when to change my career?
- No. The texts read the 10th house, its lord and the running period, and a modern book adds transits. None dates a change of work, and the only sub-period sloka that names resigning sets it among adverse results for one placement.
- Does a new Mahadasha or Antardasha mean a change of work?
- Not in any verse. A period changes lord on a date, BPHS reads the new lord by where it stood at birth, and no sloka says that work changes then.
- What does "switch" mean in the Career and Money calculator?
- Its income windows are dasha periods in which the lord touches the 2nd, 10th or 11th house and scores supportive or strong. The note calls them timing for effort, when to push, negotiate, launch or switch.
- Is Jupiter or Saturn the planet to watch?
- Chatterjee (pp. 310-311) names Jupiter's influence on the 10th house and Saturn's arrival in the 10th from the Moon as periods of gain, and rates Saturn good in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. The Gochar calculator shows both with the app's labels. Neither says when to move.
- Can the app tell me whether to take a job or start a business?
- It gives a suitability read from a tally of named factors, with the label "Job-leaning", "Business-leaning" or "Both viable". It is not a forecast of how either would go, and it needs a birth time and place.
- What if I do not know my birth time?
- The Moon-based steps work from the date alone. The Lagna, the 10th house, the Dashamsa and the Career and Money calculator need a reliable time and place.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
