"Why is my career stuck?" is usually asked after months or years without progress, and often at a low moment. A chart cannot say why: it does not know your employer, your results or your market. The classical texts offer something narrower: what they read for the 10th house, its lord and the running period, each on a condition. This page sets those readings out, including the ones the texts treat as testing, and says where they stop. If the wait is wearing on you, you do not have to read the chart first: talk to a person you trust. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about a career that is not moving
The 10th house, its lord and its strength
BPHS Ch. 21, the chapter on the 10th house, reads the lord of Karm by its strength and place. Sl. 2: a strong lord, exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa, brings paternal happiness, fame and good deeds. Sl. 3: a lord "devoid of strength" brings "obstructions in his work". Sl. 4: a lord with a benefic, or in an auspicious house, brings gain "through royal patronage and in business", and in a contrary situation "only opposite results". Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 says the same of the 10th counted from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon. Neither text puts strength in numbers; this app's Shad Bala bands (Strong from 13 of 20, Weak at 7 or below, Medium between) are its own choice. Ch. 24 Sl. 109-120 reads the 10th lord house by house, and the placements in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th read well: wealth, honour, happiness or skill (Sl. 110-113, 115, 117-119). The others are in the caution section below.
The running period
BPHS reads a Mahadasha by where its lord stood at birth and at the start (Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6; Ch. 48 Sl. 1 for the lord of Karm). Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 calls the Dashas of the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th, and of grahas placed in or joined with them, unfavourable, and adds that a Dasha is judged by the graha's place and relations; Sl. 14-17½ makes the Dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord favourable when it is joined to the lord of a trine. Chatterjee's list of inauspicious periods (pp. 122-123, item 1) opens with the same lords and adds that such a planet gives auspicious results when aspected by its dispositor or the Lagna lord, and his list of good periods (p. 121, item 7) quotes R. Santhanam that it is wrong to decide from a planet's rulership alone: position, age and the major transits must be weighed.
In Ch. 52-60 the word "position" is used for rank or office in 29 of the 288 Antardasha slokas, 11 times as a gain and 18 as a loss, each on its own condition. A pair shows the shape. For the Moon's sub-period in Saturn's Dasha, Ch. 57 Sl. 49-50½ lists happiness from kinsmen, parents, wife and employer if the Moon is in a Kendra, Trikona or the 11th from the Dasha lord; Sl. 51-52 lists "loss of position", lethargy and more enemies if the Moon is weak and in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord. Both count from the Dasha lord, not the Lagna.
Saturn, and what no text says
BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 gives Saturn "source of maintenance" among its significations, and the sub-period lists give it both gains and losses of position, each on a placement. No verse names a stuck career, counts years without progress, or says that Saturn's Dasha holds work back. Chatterjee rates Saturn's transit good from the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon (p. 311) and calls the 10th a period of gain. This app's Gochar table, which its code takes from S. Kannan, labels Saturn favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th, testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th, and neutral elsewhere, the 10th included.
How to check this in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator and note the 10th house, any graha in it, and the 10th lord (house lord): sign, house and dignity, and whether it stands in the 6th, 8th or 12th. An uncertain birth time can move the 10th house (birth time unknown).
- Count the 10th from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign) and open the Dashamsa calculator for the D10 Lagna. Saravali asks for the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon; the app does not rank them, so read both.
- The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Is the Mahadasha lord the lord of the 3rd, 6th or 11th? Does the sub-lord stand where its sloka in Ch. 52-60 asks, counted from the Lagna or the Dasha lord as the sloka says?
- The Career and Money calculator ranks the grahas on your career axis and lists dated income windows (periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong) and loss-risk windows, which it calls "windows to be deliberate in, not windows to fear". That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse.
- The Gochar calculator shows Saturn's house from your Moon with the app's label, and the Sade Sati calculator shows whether Sade Sati is running.
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: your workplace, your results, your field and your own wishes.
A sample run
Take 18 June 1992, 20:47, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Sagittarius at 25.46 degrees, so the 10th is Virgo, empty. Its lord, Mercury, stands in Gemini at 23.01 degrees in the 7th house, its own sign, with the Sun, Venus and Ketu in the same sign; its Shad Bala is 9.88 of 20, which the app labels Medium. The 10th from the Moon, in Capricorn, is Libra, also empty, and the D10 Lagna is Leo. The Jupiter Mahadasha runs from 28 October 2025 to 28 October 2041, with Jupiter's own Antardasha to 17 December 2027. Jupiter stands in Leo in the 9th house; it does not rule the 3rd, 6th or 11th and nothing is joined with it, so Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 does not apply. Ch. 21 Sl. 4 is met by the 10th lord's auspicious house (a Kendra, Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37), and for the sub-period Ch. 56 Sl. 1-3½ asks for exaltation or a Kendra or Trikona and is met, while the opposite Sl. 4-5½ is not. Saturn, then in Pisces, was in the 3rd from the Moon, labelled favourable; Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani were not running, and of the other eight transits one was labelled testing and one carried the app's "intensified" mark. The app flags no dosha and six yogas, among them a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga; this page weighs none of them. The Career and Money calculator names Mercury first (10th lord and Amatya Karaka), Mars second and the Sun third (D10 Lagna lord, Weak at 4.38 of 20), and reads "Job-leaning" (3 against 1.25). It lists no income window before 17 December 2027, when Saturn's Antardasha begins; Jupiter's periods are not windows because the test asks for a lord that touches the 2nd, 10th or 11th, and Jupiter rules the 1st and 4th, stands in the 9th and aspects the 1st, 3rd and 5th. That says nothing about why anyone's work is or is not moving. Its one loss-risk window, from February 2037, is not weighed here. On the factors this page looks at, no adverse condition is met. None of this says whether the person's work is moving: someone with this chart can feel stuck, and someone with a harder chart can be moving.
Common misreadings
- "My 10th lord is weak, so I will stay stuck." Ch. 21 Sl. 3 and Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 tie obstruction or decline to a lord that lacks strength, but neither defines the word or dates the result, and Ch. 21 Sl. 4 reads a lord with a benefic or in an auspicious house the other way.
- "Saturn is holding my career back." The lists give Saturn favourable and adverse lines by placement, and the Gochar calculator labels its transit favourable, neutral or testing by house from your Moon.
- "Retrograde means stuck." BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 says only that a retrograde Dasha lord's effects come in the reverse order. Chatterjee calls the Dasha and Antar Dasha of retrograde planets "never good" (p. 124, item 18), and on p. 325 describes one kind of chart, with the 6th lord retrograde in the Lagna, whose work troubles ease when that planet turns direct in transit; it is not a rule for every retrograde. This app marks retrograde grahas, gives a retrograde Mars, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus Chesta Bala in Shad Bala, and its dasha calculator applies no retrograde rule.
What astrology cannot tell you about a stuck career
No chart knows your employer's structure, the openings above you, your manager, your results, the state of your industry, your health or your family's needs. Many stalls have ordinary causes a chart cannot see: a flat organisation, a skills gap, a market that has not grown, a role that never had a next step. A conversation with your manager, a mentor or a careers adviser tests those faster than a chart does. When will I get promoted and career change timing look at related factors in the same way, and the Career and Money feature page sets out the app's career reading.
What to take care of
The texts name the area plainly: work, standing and money. BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 10th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th less kindly than elsewhere: a skilful native "bereft of wealth" and troubled by enemies (Sl. 114), "devoid of acts" (Sl. 116), or worried "in spite of being skilful" (Sl. 120). Ch. 21 Sl. 18 speaks of obstructions to a person's acts when the 10th lord is debilitated and the 10th and the 7th both hold malefics. Of the 29 sub-period slokas that use "position" for rank or office, 18 name a loss, usually for a sub-lord that is weak, afflicted or in the 6th, 8th or 12th. These are warnings about an area, each beside readings that go the other way, not a forecast.
Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are later traditions: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention them. This app takes Sade Sati from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 311-313). Chatterjee (p. 311) writes that its effect depends on the stage of life at which it falls, and that at the beginning of a career it "will spoil the career or profession", "may delay or deny chances of promotion", and may bring a transfer to a place one may not like, financial loss and quarrels with superiors or subordinates; he does not apply it where Saturn is a yogakaraka for the chart, well placed, with benefic association or aspect. On p. 123 (item 9) he reports R. Santhanam naming six Dasha and sub-period pairs, listed as Saturn-Rahu, Rahu-Saturn, Jupiter-Rahu, Rahu-Mercury, Mercury-Rahu and Rahu-Mars, that bring "severe set backs in professional spheres", and adds two of his own, Rahu-Jupiter and Mars-Rahu: one modern author's list, taken from a magazine. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
- Write down what has changed in your work over the last year - scope, pay, title, people - so that "stuck" becomes something you can describe to a manager or a mentor.
- Ask your manager in writing what the next step needs and by when, and keep a dated record of your results.
- Talk to someone a step or two ahead of you in your field before you decide anything; an outside view sees what a chart cannot.
- Keep some savings aside for a slow patch, and read any new offer, contract or notice-period clause twice before you sign.
- Update your CV and keep one sample of your work ready, so that an opening does not find you unprepared.
- If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli tell me why my career is stuck?
- No. The texts read the 10th house, the strength of its lord and the running period, each on a condition, and a modern book adds Saturn's transit. None counts years without progress or says why a particular person has not moved.
- Which planet is to blame for a stuck career?
- None. The texts give each graha favourable and adverse readings by placement, and this page reports what they read, not who is at fault.
- Do Saturn's Mahadasha or Sade Sati stop a career?
- No verse says so, and Sade Sati is a later tradition. Chatterjee writes that at the start of a career it may delay or deny promotion, with an exception for a chart where Saturn is a yogakaraka, well placed, with benefic association or aspect. The calculators say only whether it is running.
- I have felt stuck for a long time. Should I check my chart first?
- No. Talk to someone you trust, such as a mentor, a friend or a careers adviser, first, and if you feel low for more than two weeks call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India). The chart can wait; it cannot assess how you are.
- What if I do not know my birth time?
- The Moon-based steps work from the date alone. The Lagna, the 10th house, the Dashamsa and the Career and Money calculator need a reliable time and place.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
