People ask this for many reasons: a job offer, studies, a partner overseas, a visa refused more than once, or a family that hopes for it. A kundli does not hold the answer. The classical texts list living in foreign lands under the 10th house, tie wandering between countries to the 12th on conditions, and name foreign journeys among some sub-periods' results. This page sets out what they say, how to check the same factors in your own chart, and where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about living abroad
The houses
BPHS Ch. 11 gives a house to each kind of going: the 3rd house "journey" (Sl. 4), the 7th "travel" (Sl. 8), the 9th "visits to shrines" (Sl. 10), and the 10th "living in foreign lands" (Sl. 11). Its list for the 12th house (Sl. 13) names expenses and the history of enemies, and no foreign land. The chapter on the 12th has one pair of verses on it: a person "will wander from country to country" when the 12th and its lord are with malefics and the lord aspects or is aspected by malefics, and "will move in his own country" when the same are with benefics (Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12).
Saravali Ch. 32 counts the 9th, the house of fortune, from the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon (Sl. 2): if its own lord occupies or aspects it, fortune is made in one's own country; if other planets do, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere" (Sl. 4). BPHS Ch. 24 says the 6th lord in the 2nd "will live in alien countries" (Sl. 62) and in the 10th "will be happy in foreign countries" (Sl. 70). The house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, the editor's modern material, is where the 12th gets "life in a foreign place".
No verse makes a graha the significator, or karaka, of living abroad: BPHS's house karakas (Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34) and its list of what each graha stands for (Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6) have none, and Rahu is in neither. The Bhrigu Sutras attach being away from one's native place to a few placements, usually beside hardships: the Sun in the 1st (Sutras 1-21) or the 12th (Sutras 103-110), and Mars in the 4th (Sutras 26-33).
Dasha and sub-periods
In BPHS's Dasha chapters, Rahu's own Dasha (Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½) brings "recognition from Government of foreign countries" with Rahu in its exaltation sign and the like, and wealth "through a foreign Government" with a benefic's company or aspect, in a benefic's sign and certain houses. In the sub-period chapters (Ch. 52-60), 35 of the 288 slokas mention foreign lands, a foreign ruler or the homeland. Most set it among losses, on a placement such as the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord; fewer set it among gains, where a return to the homeland counts as good. Three examples:
| Sub-lord (Dasha lord) | BPHS | The sloka asks the sub-lord to be | What it lists, among much else |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Rahu) | Ch. 55 Sl. 66 | In a Kendra, a Trikona, the 3rd or the 11th from Rahu | "Well-being in every way and recognition from kings in foreign countries" |
| Saturn (Saturn) | Ch. 57 Sl. 4-5½ | In the 8th or 12th, or with malefics in its debilitation sign | "Going away from the homeland" mid-period, among dangers; the last part beneficial |
| Rahu (Venus) | Ch. 60 Sl. 40-41½ | "In the above circumstances": well placed, as in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th | Foreign journeys "will bring success", and a safe return home |
BPHS uses the word "settling" once: Ch. 62 Sl. 35, "settling down in foreign lands", for the Sun's Sukshma Dasha within Rahu's Pratyantar Dasha; Sl. 67 gives "residence in foreign lands", beside quarrels, for the Sun's within Ketu's. The Sukshma is the fourth Vimshottari level, and this app computes none.
A modern author
Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II calls whether one "would settle down abroad professionally" the commonest question of ambitious Indians (p. 85). He calls a strong 12th lord essential, and records that other astrologers count malefic affliction of the 8th and 12th as a strong factor (p. 86). He gives rules of thumb (p. 88), some quoted from later books outside this site's corpus: for residence in a distant place, which he says covers even a move within India, a connection between the 4th and 12th lords with malefic influence on the 4th; for many foreign journeys, the 12th lord in the 9th; for living or going abroad, the Moon in the 12th or Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th. For permanent settlement he adds the Chaturthamsa (D4), which BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 reads for "fortunes". He also quotes advice to "look for green pastures in the native country itself" when the Lagna lord aspects the Lagna (p. 87), and for timing names the Dasha of the 12th lord or of Rahu (p. 91). These are one modern author's rules, and they point different ways. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
Not in the corpus: BPHS does not list foreign lands among the 12th house's significations, and no verse names a significator of living abroad or a period in which a person settles, beyond the Sukshma verse above.
How to check this in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator and note the 9th house: which grahas sit in it, and whether its own lord (house lord) occupies or aspects it. Count aspects by BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5: every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. An uncertain birth time can move every house (birth time unknown).
- Repeat from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives its sign). Saravali asks for the stronger of the two; the app does not rank them, so read both.
- Look at the 12th and its lord: what joins each, and what aspects the lord. The malefics are the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, a waning Moon and a Mercury joined to a malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11). Note the 10th, and whether the 4th lord is connected with the 12th lord.
- Note Rahu and the Moon: the rules Chatterjee quotes want Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th, the Moon in the 12th, or the 12th lord in the 9th.
- The yogas calculator shows Rajju Yoga if all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn are in movable signs (BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7; Sl. 18: "will earn in foreign countries"); its note speaks of "earning and living away from home".
- The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha. Find the sub-lord's slokas in BPHS Ch. 52-60 and check whether it stands where they ask.
- The Gochar calculator labels each transit from your Moon in this app's table, which its code takes from S. Kannan. No verse cited here ties a transit to moving abroad.
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside the visa rules, an offer, money, health and family.
A sample run
Take 31 January 1994, 13:10, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha and Gochar calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Taurus at 12.95 degrees. The 9th, Capricorn, holds the Sun (labelled neutral), Mars (exalted, combust) and Venus (friendly sign, combust); its lord, Saturn, is in the 10th, labelled Moolatrikona, with Mercury. The 12th, Aries, is empty; its lord is the same Mars, the 12th lord in the 9th, beside the Sun, the 4th lord. Rahu is in the 7th and the Moon, in Virgo (neutral), in the 5th. The app flags no dosha; the yogas calculator lists eight yogas, none of them Rajju, which this page does not weigh.
| What the rule asks | Source | This chart |
|---|---|---|
| The 9th held or aspected by its own lord (fortune at home), or by others (elsewhere) | Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 | Three others occupy it and Saturn does not aspect it: "elsewhere". From the Moon, the 9th (Taurus) holds Ketu: the same |
| The 12th and its lord with malefics, the lord aspecting or aspected by them; or all with benefics | BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12 | The 12th is empty; Mars, with a malefic and a benefic, has no aspect to or from a graha: neither is met |
| All seven grahas in movable signs | BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 7, 18 | No |
| The 4th lord connected with the 12th lord, with malefic influence on the 4th | Chatterjee p. 88 | The Sun is with Mars; Mars and Saturn aspect the 4th: yes |
| The 12th lord in the 9th; Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th; the Moon in the 12th | Chatterjee p. 88, quoting other books | Yes; yes; no |
The dasha calculator shows Rahu's Mahadasha from 20 March 2012 to 21 March 2030, and the Sun's Antardasha from 8 October 2026 to 1 September 2027. Chatterjee names Rahu's Dasha in his timing rule. Two verses for this sub-period are met: Ch. 55 Sl. 62-63½ lists "journeys to foreign countries" among gains when the Sun is with or aspected by the lord of the 1st, 2nd or 10th (Venus, the Lagna lord, is with it), and Sl. 66 lists recognition abroad, its condition met by the Sun in the 3rd from Rahu; the adverse Sl. 64-65 (the Sun debilitated, or 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu) is not. Rahu's own Dasha verse is not met: Scorpio is none of the signs it gives Rahu, it is a sign of Mars, and no benefic joins or aspects Rahu. The Gochar calculator that day labelled Rahu, then in Aquarius, favourable (6th from the Moon), Saturn neutral and Ketu testing; six of the nine were favourable. None of this, and no calculator on this page, says this person will move abroad, when, or whether it would go well: the verses name a journey and recognition, not a new home.
Common misreadings
- "The 12th house means I will settle abroad." BPHS's list for the 12th has no foreign land; its one rule on the matter is wandering under malefics, beside moving within one's own country under benefics (Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12). This app's own short label for the 12th, "expenses, foreign ties, release", follows the modern lists.
- "Rahu is the foreign planet." No significator list in BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras gives Rahu foreign lands; "Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th" comes from a later book, quoted by Chatterjee.
- "A journey in my dasha means I will settle." The sub-period verses speak of journeys, recognition abroad and the return home; settling appears only in the Sukshma verse above.
What astrology cannot tell you about settling abroad
No chart knows a country's visa rules, an employer's or a university's decision, your savings, your health, your family's needs or the law, and those decide whether and when you can move. A chart that meets every rule above changes none of them; one that meets none closes no door. None of the texts weighs whether a move would be right for you.
For a decision this large, ask people: someone who has made the move, an employer or university you can verify, the destination's official visa information, and your family. Foreign travel in a kundli reads shorter journeys in the same way, and career change timing looks at the work side.
What to take care of
The texts do flag this area. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11 ties wandering from country to country to malefic influence on the 12th; Ch. 57 Sl. 4-5½ reads "going away from the homeland" among dangers when Saturn is in the 8th or 12th in its own sub-period; most sub-period slokas that mention foreign lands set the journey among losses; and Chatterjee (p. 91) expects "problems and frustrating results overseas" in adverse dasha and transit periods. The area named is travel and life away from home: read it as a reason to prepare well, not as a forecast.
- Take visa, work-permit and admission rules from the destination government's official sources, and never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed visa or job.
- Read an offer or contract twice before you resign or pay fees, and leave copies of your passport, visa and contract with someone at home.
- Keep savings for the first months and a ticket home, and arrange health cover where you are going.
- If an employer or agent takes your passport or threatens you, contact the nearest Indian embassy or consulate.
- A new country can be lonely: plan regular contact with people at home. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli tell me whether I will settle abroad?
- No. The texts list living in foreign lands under the 10th (BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11), tie wandering between countries to the 12th on conditions (Ch. 23 Sl. 11) and name foreign journeys among sub-period results. None says whether, when or where a person settles.
- Is the 12th house the house of foreign settlement?
- Not in BPHS, whose list for the 12th has no foreign land; Ch. 23 Sl. 11 reads it for wandering under malefics. "Life in a foreign place" comes from the modern house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras.
- Does Rahu take people abroad?
- No verse here makes Rahu a significator of foreign lands. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39½ ties Rahu's Dasha to recognition or wealth from a foreign government only when Rahu is exalted or the like, or has a benefic's company or aspect in a benefic's sign and certain houses.
- My Rahu Mahadasha has begun. Will I go abroad now?
- The Mahadasha alone does not say so. Chatterjee (p. 91) names Rahu's Dasha as a modern timing factor; BPHS keys each sub-period's results to where the sub-lord stands, and its foreign results are mostly journeys.
- Should I decide whether to move from my chart?
- No. Decide on the offer, the visa, the money, your health and your family. A chart cannot weigh any of them, and no calculator on this page says whether you will settle abroad.
