Gemini ascendant (Mithuna Lagna): the twelve houses, their lords, and what the texts say

With Gemini rising, Mercury is the lagna lord and Jupiter rules two angles. This page sets out the house map from Gemini, how BPHS Ch. 34 reads the lordships and names no yogakaraka, where each graha is exalted and debilitated, and one chart worked through.

In short

With Gemini rising, Mercury is the lagna lord and also rules the 4th house. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 calls Venus the only auspicious graha and Mars, Jupiter and the Sun malefic, and names no yogakaraka, so this app shows none. An exact birth time is needed to know the ascendant.

In plain words

  • You come across as curious, quick and easy to talk to.
  • People see you as witty and friendly. You pick up new things fast and connect with many kinds of people.
  • You keep your options open. You are drawn to work with words, ideas, people and learning.
  • In a meeting, you explain ideas clearly and connect people.
  • Your mind races and you scatter your attention. It helps to write your worries down and pick one thing.
  • Why: Gemini is ruled by Mercury (thinking, communication, learning). It is an air sign, so you live in ideas, and a mutable sign, so you adapt easily.
  • Pick one main task each morning and finish it first.
  • Gemini rising does not mean shallow. Your curiosity can go very deep when something matters to you.

Gemini is the ascendant, or lagna, when the sign Mithuna is rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. That depends on the clock, not the calendar, so it needs a birth time (see when the birth time is unknown) and a place; the Lagna calculator takes both. This app counts whole-sign houses, so with Gemini rising Gemini is the 1st house, Cancer the 2nd, and so on to Taurus as the 12th. Mithuna belongs to Mercury, which makes Mercury the lagna lord.

The sign itself, with its nakshatras and what each graha does in it, is on the Gemini rashi page, whose rising section also sets out the Ch. 34 verdict house by house. This page adds how BPHS groups the twelve houses, how the verse's rules read against this lagna's lordships, the grahas' strong and weak houses, what Mercury does as lagna lord, and one chart worked through. It sets out rules, not a portrait of Gemini-rising people.

The twelve houses from Gemini and the lords that rule them

Each house takes the lord of its sign. Rahu and Ketu own no sign in this engine, so seven grahas share twelve houses: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn rule two each, the Sun and Moon one each. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the houses into angles (kendras), trines, succedents (panapharas), cadents (apoklimas), dusthanas and upachayas; the Lagna counts as both angle and trine (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7).

Signs and lords: a check script gemini. Groups: BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36.

Three features organise what follows. Jupiter rules two angles, the 7th and 10th, and no trine. Saturn rules the 8th, a dusthana, and the 9th, a trine; Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says an 8th lord who also owns a trine bestows auspicious effects. And the Sun and Mars between them own all three houses whose lords Sl. 2-7 says give evil effects (the 3rd, 6th and 11th). Apart from the lagna lord, no graha owns both an angle and a trine.

The engine's yoga tests draw on these lists: Raj yoga for the Gemini ascendant and Dhana yoga for the Gemini ascendant take them lord by lord. The same facts colour each period; the Mahadasha pages for this ascendant are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

What the texts say: BPHS Ch. 34 for Mithun Lagn

BPHS Ch. 34 is the chapter on yoga karakas. Its Sl. 25-26 is the verdict for Mithun Lagn, laid out house by house on the Gemini rashi page; the rules behind it are Sl. 2-14, and Sl. 8-10 names the natural benefics and malefics. Read against the lordships above, they give this.

Graha (rules)Natural nature, Sl. 8-10What Sl. 2-7, 13 and 14 point toSl. 25-26 for Mithun
Mercury (1st, 4th)neutral: benefic or malefic by companyLagna lord, "specially auspicious"; also an angle lordnot classed
Venus (5th, 12th)beneficTrine lord, so auspicious results; a 12th lord's effects depend on association"the only auspicious" graha
Saturn (8th, 9th)maleficAn 8th lord who also owns a trine bestows auspicious effectsnot classed
Jupiter (7th, 10th)beneficA benefic owning an angle gives no benefic effects; Jupiter owns two, and Sl. 8-10 ranks it above Mercury and the Moon for showing thismalefic
Mars (6th, 11th)maleficOwns two houses that give evil effectsmalefic
Sun (3rd)maleficOwns the 3rd, which gives evil effectsmalefic
Moon (2nd)mediocre beneficOwns the 2nd, which none of Sl. 2-7's lists namesneither auspicious nor malefic
The third column is this page's cross-reading of Sl. 2-7, 8-10, 13 and 14, not a sloka.

The engine's table holds the same lists, with no yogakaraka. Sl. 25-26 treats the conjunction of Jupiter with Saturn as it does for Mesh Lagn; the engine's yoga tests apply no per-lagna exception, and the rashi page covers that pair. Where the engine and the verse differ, this page reports both.

Is Venus the yogakaraka for Gemini rising?

No. Sl. 13 makes a graha that owns an angle and a trine a Yog Karak. Counting the 4th, 7th and 10th against the 5th and 9th, no graha of this lagna owns one of each; Venus holds a trine (the 5th) and a dusthana (the 12th), and the lagna lord is always both angle and trine, which Sl. 2-7 treats separately. Sl. 25-26 names none, and "the only auspicious Grah" is a class, not the Sl. 13 role. The engine agrees, and the Kundali's full reading prints "No planet plays this specific role for Gemini Lagna."

The Bhrigu Sutras translator's comments on Gemini rising

The comments printed after the sutras are the translator's, not Bhrigu's. At least ten name Gemini as the ascendant; the table gives four, and those on Mercury in the 9th and 10th, Jupiter in the 7th and 10th and Saturn in the 9th (pp. 70-71, 81, 83, 106) are on the Gemini rashi page.

Bhrigu Sutras, translator's comments, paraphrased. Each applies only when the graha sits in that house.

The verse calls Jupiter and Mars malefic for Gemini rising, and the comments rate these placements of both highly. The verse classes a graha and the comments judge a placement, but where they pull apart the sources disagree, this page does not choose, and the engine follows BPHS. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 37-38 files Gemini among the four signs of medium ascension, between the quickest and the slowest to rise.

Exalted and debilitated signs, counted as houses from Gemini

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives the exaltation signs of the Sun to Saturn as Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces and Libra, each with debilitation in the seventh sign from it; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 35-36 agrees. Counting from Gemini turns that into a house map.

VenusPisces, the 10thVirgo, the 4th
SaturnLibra, the 5thAries, the 11th
Houses counted from Gemini as the 1st. Signs from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50.

The lagna lord is exalted in the 4th and weak in the 10th, both angles, with Venus the reverse. Mars and Jupiter swap the 2nd and 8th, and the Sun and Saturn the 5th and 11th. Mercury is exalted in the first 15 degrees of Virgo, Moolatrikona in the next 5 and in its own sign for the last 10 (Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54); Gemini, the 1st, is its other own sign. The app's "Friendly sign" and "Enemy sign" labels depend on the chart and cannot be tabulated by house. See exaltation and debilitation.

Mercury as lagna lord: BPHS Ch. 12 and Ch. 24

BPHS ties bodily comfort to the lagna lord: Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 says it lessens when the lagna lord is joined to a malefic or sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and holds in an angle or trine. There "malefic" is the natural class of Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 (the Sun, Saturn, Mars, a weak Moon), not the Sl. 25-26 list; by the same verses Mercury itself turns benefic or malefic with its company. Ch. 24 Sl. 1-12 reads the lagna lord in each house: in the 2nd it names gain, scholarship and honour (Sl. 2); in the 3rd valour and wealth (Sl. 3); in the 9th fortune, skill, eloquence and wealth (Sl. 9); in the 10th, where Mercury is debilitated, royal honour, fame and self-earned wealth (Sl. 10); in the 11th gains, good qualities and fame (Sl. 11). In the 6th the verse turns the result on malefic company and a benefic's aspect (Sl. 6).

House and dignity are separate facts, as the 10th shows. Mercury in each house has a page, from Mercury in the 1st house to Mercury in the 12th house; the Shad Bala calculator shows its strength in a given chart.

Rules read from the app's code detect yogas; lords from a check script gemini. The Jupiter and Saturn pair for Dharma-Karmadhipati is on the rashi page.

The five Kendra-Kona pairs are Mercury with Venus, Mercury with Saturn, Mercury with Jupiter, Jupiter with Venus and Jupiter with Saturn. The test follows BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 28 (any relationship). Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 counts lords joined together only in an angle or trine, and Sl. 15 sets the yoga aside for a lord who also owns a dusthana; Venus (the 12th) and Saturn (the 8th) both do, which would leave only Mercury with Jupiter. Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga gives the general rule.

Worked example: Gemini rising at 14.92 degrees, New Delhi, 11 April 1985

This is not a real person's chart. It is a birth moment, 10:47 IST on 11 April 1985 in New Delhi, that the helper found by a deterministic search because it rises in Gemini; re-enter it in the Birth Chart calculator. The engine puts the ascendant at 14.92 degrees. Each nakshatra takes 13 degrees 20 minutes (four padas of 3 degrees 20): the last two padas of Mrigashira fill the first 6.67 degrees of Gemini and Ardra the next 13.33, so 14.92 falls in Ardra, pada 3 (13.33 to 16.67). The next sign is 15.08 degrees away.

  • The lagna lord. Mercury, lord of the 1st and 4th, is in Pisces, the 10th, an angle, which Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 counts in its favour; the sign is its fall, and the engine marks it retrograde. Venus, the verse's one auspicious graha, shares the sign, exalted and 1.47 degrees on (16.11 minus 14.64), and the engine lists Malavya Yoga for it. The Bhrigu Sutras translator's comment on Mercury in the 10th (p. 71) counts this placement, for Gemini rising, among powerful Dhan yogas; it does not discuss the sign.
  • Mercury with Venus. The 10th is an angle, so Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12's location condition is met for this pair, and the engine lists Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) by Ch. 41 Sl. 28. Read literally, Sl. 15 bars it, because Venus, the trine lord, also owns the 12th, a dusthana.
  • Saturn, lord of the 8th, sits in the 6th, in an enemy sign: one dusthana lord in another, which the engine lists as Sarala Yoga. Jupiter, lord of the 7th and 10th, is debilitated in Capricorn, the 8th. The two are in different houses, so no Dharma-Karmadhipati row appears.

The yoga list also carries Durudhura Yoga (Jupiter in the 2nd sign from the Moon and Saturn in the 12th), Vesi Yoga, Pasa Yoga and Argala Raj Yoga; those come from placement patterns, not lordship. The Kundali's yogakaraka line reads "No planet plays this specific role for Gemini Lagna". The dosha list shows Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild: Jupiter owns the 7th and 10th but not the 1st) and Kaal Sarp Dosha; they have their own pages. Nothing here is a verdict on a person. Carry three questions to your own chart: where Mercury is and who joins it, where Saturn and Jupiter fall, and which Raj Yoga links hold under Sl. 11-12.

Who is the lagna lord for a Gemini ascendant?
Mercury, because Mithuna is Mercury's sign. It also rules the 4th, so it holds the Lagna and a second angle. BPHS Ch. 12 and Ch. 24 read the lagna lord's house and company, so Mercury is the first graha to check.
Mercury is debilitated in the 10th for Gemini rising. Is that a good house for the lagna lord?
By house, BPHS favours it: Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 counts an angle in the lagna lord's favour, and Ch. 24 Sl. 10 reads the lagna lord in the 10th as royal honour, fame and self-earned wealth. By sign it is weak: Pisces is Mercury's debilitation (Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50), and the engine labels it Debilitated. The two are separate facts, and the worked chart above has both.
My birth time is only approximate. Is my ascendant still Gemini?
It may not be. Compute the chart at both ends of your time range with the Lagna calculator and see whether the sign changes; if it does, read when the birth time is unknown.
Where are Mercury and Jupiter exalted and debilitated in a Gemini-rising chart?
Counted from Gemini: Mercury is exalted in the 4th (Virgo) and debilitated in the 10th (Pisces); Jupiter is exalted in the 2nd (Cancer) and debilitated in the 8th (Capricorn) (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50).
How many Kendra-Kona pairs can a Gemini ascendant form, and would BPHS count them?
Five. The engine lists the yoga when an angle lord and a trine lord are together or in mutual aspect (Ch. 41 Sl. 28). A literal Sl. 15 would set aside the four that include Venus or Saturn, leaving Mercury with Jupiter.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
