Pisces ascendant (Meena Lagna): the twelve houses, their lords, and what the texts say

With Pisces rising, Jupiter rules both the Lagna and the 10th. This page sets out the house map from Pisces, how BPHS Ch. 34 says "Mangal and Guru will cause a Yog" while calling Mercury, lord of two angles, malefic, what the Bhrigu Sutras translator adds, and one chart worked through.

In short

With Pisces rising, Jupiter is the lagna lord and also rules the 10th house. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 calls Mars and the Moon auspicious and Saturn, Venus, the Sun and Mercury malefic, and says "Mangal and Guru will cause a Yog", Mars being the 9th lord; the Kundali's full reading lists both as yogakarakas. An exact birth time is needed.

In plain words

  • You seem gentle, imaginative and kind.
  • People see you as soft-hearted and dreamy. You soak up the mood around you.
  • You follow your heart and sense of purpose. You are drawn to art, healing, music, care work and spiritual study.
  • In a meeting, you sense the mood and speak gently.
  • You escape into daydreams or sleep. It helps to keep a small routine and talk to someone grounded.
  • Why: Pisces is ruled by Jupiter (growth, wisdom, guidance). It is a water sign, so feelings run deep, and a mutable sign, so you flow with others. As the 12th sign it is linked to endings, rest and the inner world.
  • Keep a simple daily routine for sleep and meals.
  • Pisces rising does not mean impractical. Your kindness and imagination are real gifts.

A chart has a Pisces ascendant, or lagna, when Meena is rising on the eastern horizon at the minute of birth, so finding it takes a birth time and a place (see when the birth time is unknown); the Lagna calculator takes both. With whole-sign houses, as this app counts them, Pisces is the 1st house, Aries the 2nd and Aquarius the 12th. Jupiter owns Meena and is the lagna lord.

The sign itself, its nakshatras and the Ch. 34 verdict lord by lord are on the Pisces rashi page. This page adds the house groups, the verse read against its rules, Jupiter as lagna lord, the engine's lordship yogas and one worked chart: rules about positions, not a portrait of people.

The house lords for Pisces rising, grouped by BPHS

A house takes the lord of its sign. Rahu and Ketu own no sign in this engine, so seven grahas share the twelve houses. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 groups them as angles (kendras), trines, succedents (panapharas), cadents (apoklimas), dusthanas and upachayas; Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 counts the Lagna as angle and trine at once.

Three patterns stand out. Jupiter holds the Lagna and the 10th. Mars holds the 9th, a trine, so Mars and Jupiter are the lords of the 9th and 10th. And the Sun, Venus and Saturn hold all three dusthanas and no angle or trine; the other houses of Venus and Saturn, the 3rd and the 11th, are two whose lords Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says give evil effects.

Raj yoga for the Pisces ascendant and Dhana yoga for the Pisces ascendant take these lords one by one, and each graha's Mahadasha for this lagna has a page: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

What the texts say: BPHS Ch. 34 for Meen rising

BPHS Ch. 34 is the chapter on yoga karakas. Its Sl. 43-44, headed "Grahas and Meen Bhava", is this lagna's verdict, set out lord by lord on the Pisces rashi page. The table reads it against the chapter's rules: Sl. 2-7 on lordship and Sl. 8-10 on each graha's natural nature.

Graha (rules)Natural nature, Sl. 8-10What Sl. 2-7 and 8-10 point toSl. 43-44 for Meen
Jupiter (1st, 10th)beneficLagna lord, "specially auspicious"; but it also owns the 10th, and a benefic owning an angle "will not give benefic effects"; Sl. 8-10 lists Guru for "revealing maleficence" through anglesnamed only for the Yog, with Mars
Mars (2nd, 9th)maleficOwns a trine: auspicious results. Sl. 2-7 does not class the 2ndauspicious; "Mangal and Guru will cause a Yog"
Venus (3rd, 8th)beneficThe 3rd lord gives evil effects; an 8th lord also owning the 3rd "will prove specifically harmful"malefic
Mercury (4th, 7th)neutralOwns two angles; Sl. 8-10 lists Budh for "revealing maleficence" through anglesmalefic
Moon (5th)mediocre beneficOwns a trine: auspicious resultsauspicious
Sun (6th)maleficThe 6th lord gives evil effectsmalefic
Saturn (11th, 12th)maleficThe 11th lord gives evil effects; a 12th lord's effects depend on associationmalefic
The third column is this page's cross-reading of Sl. 2-7 and 8-10, not a sloka. Sl. 14 touches no graha here, since no natural malefic owns an angle.

Only Jupiter's row pulls two ways, and the verse settles it by giving Jupiter no class: it names Jupiter only for the Yog, with Mars. The other six rows agree with the verse; the rashi page gives its own reasons for the malefic four.

The verse's pair: the 9th lord and the 10th lord

Sl. 43-44 says "Mangal and Guru will cause a Yog" without the words Yog Karak, so this page quotes it rather than naming a yogakaraka; Sl. 13's rule, one graha owning one of the 4th, 7th and 10th and one of the 5th and 9th, finds none for Pisces. Beyond the angle-and-trine reasoning on the rashi page, the two are the 9th and 10th lords, the very pair the engine's Dharma-Karmadhipati test looks for. The Kundali's full reading prints "Mars - special source of rise" and the same line for Jupiter, with each one's sign and house; the free Birth Chart tool shows only the yoga list.

The Bhrigu Sutras translator's comments on Pisces rising

The comments printed after the sutras are the translator's, not Bhrigu's. At least seventeen pages of them name Pisces as the ascendant; the table covers sixteen, and the seventeenth, p. 74 on Jupiter in the Lagna, is on the Pisces rashi page.

Bhrigu Sutras, translator's comments, paraphrased. Each applies only when the graha sits in that house.

The Moon, Mars and Jupiter rows fit the verse; the Mercury and Saturn rows praise grahas that Sl. 43-44 calls malefic. The verse classes a graha and the comments judge a placement: where they disagree, this page reports both without choosing, and the engine follows BPHS. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 37-38 lists Pisces among the four signs of short ascension, the quickest to rise.

Jupiter as lagna lord: BPHS Ch. 12 and Ch. 24

Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 ties bodily comfort to the lagna lord: it diminishes when that lord is joined to a malefic or stands in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and lasts in an angle or trine. "Malefic" there is the natural class of Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 (the Sun, Saturn, Mars, a weak Moon; Mercury by its company), so Mars counts, though Sl. 43-44 calls it auspicious for Pisces. Jupiter's exaltation and debilitation houses are in the rashi page's lordship table.

Ch. 24 follows the lagna lord through the houses. Jupiter is in its own sign in two of them, both angles: in the 1st Sl. 1 gives physical happiness and prowess, and in the 10th, Sagittarius (its Moolatrikona for the first third, BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54), Sl. 10 gives royal honour, fame and self-earned wealth. The 2nd gives gain and honour (Sl. 2), the 3rd valour and wealth (Sl. 3), the 9th fortune and skill (Sl. 9), the 11th gains and fame (Sl. 11). In the 6th the sloka turns on malefic company and a benefic's aspect (Sl. 6), in the 12th on a benefic's aspect or company (Sl. 12). The pages run from Jupiter in the 1st house to Jupiter in the 12th house; the Shad Bala calculator weighs its strength.

Which lordship yogas the engine can test for Pisces rising

Raja Yoga5th Moon, 9th Marsthey share one house
Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona)angle lords Jupiter, Mercury; trine lords Jupiter, Moon, Marsan angle lord and a trine lord are together or in mutual aspect; 5 pairs can form
Harsha, Sarala, Vimala6th Sun, 8th Venus, 12th Saturnthat lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th
Rules read from the app's code detect yogas. For Pisces the 9th and 10th lords are the verse's own pair.

The five pairs are Jupiter with the Moon and with Mars, and Mercury with Jupiter, the Moon and Mars. The engine counts any relationship between them, after BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 28; Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 wants joined lords in an angle or trine. Sl. 15 refuses the yoga to a lord who also owns an evil house, but no angle or trine lord of Pisces does, so all five survive it. Sl. 11-12 states its rule by lordship alone, so Mercury qualifies though the verse calls it malefic. Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga gives the general rule.

Worked example: Pisces rising at 23.04 degrees, New Delhi, 19 January 1985

No real person was born with this chart. It is 11:14 IST on 19 January 1985 in New Delhi, picked by a deterministic search (a check script pisces-ascendant) because Pisces rises in it; the Birth Chart calculator shows the same figures. The ascendant is at 23.04 degrees. Revati fills the last 13.33 degrees of Pisces (16.67 to 30.00) in four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes, so 23.04 is in pada 2 (20.00 to 23.33), 0.29 of a degree short of pada 3.

1985-01-19 11:14 IST, New Delhi, as the engine computes it. Degrees are within the sign.
  • The lagna lord. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, the 11th, with the Sun 3.37 degrees ahead (5.46 minus 2.09), so the engine flags it combust. The Sun is a natural malefic, so Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2's condition of a lagna lord joined to a malefic is met; Ch. 24 Sl. 11 reads the lagna lord in the 11th as gains, good qualities and fame.
  • The verse's pair. Mars (9th lord) is in Aquarius, the 12th, with Venus; Jupiter (10th lord) is in the 11th. Neither joined nor aspecting each other's house (the Kundali's full reading lists the houses each graha aspects), they form no Dharma-Karmadhipati or Kendra-Kona row, though the Yoga Karaka panel prints both: Mars in Aquarius (house 12), Jupiter in Capricorn (house 11).
  • The Kendra-Kona row. Mercury (4th and 7th lord) and the Moon (5th lord) are together in Sagittarius, the 10th, 3.96 degrees apart (16.62 minus 12.66). That is an angle, so Sl. 11-12 is met, and neither owns an evil house, so Sl. 15 does not bar them. The Bhrigu Sutras translator's comment on Mercury in the 10th (p. 71) counts this placement for Pisces rising among "powerful Dhan yogas", and names "Amia" yoga for a benefic Mercury in the 10th, which the engine lists as Amala Yoga; no other comment covers a placement in this chart.
  • The exchange and the evil houses. Mars in Saturn's Aquarius and Saturn in Mars's Scorpio, the 9th, give Parivarthana Yoga, marked mixed because Saturn rules the 12th and no angle or trine, which also keeps it outside Sl. 11-12. Venus, the 8th lord, in the 12th gives Sarala Yoga. The Sun (6th) and Saturn (12th) stand outside the evil houses, and the Moon and Mars are apart, so there is no Harsha, Vimala or Raja Yoga row.

The yoga list also shows Durudhura, Ubhayachari and Kedara, placement patterns rather than lordship, and Argala Raj Yoga. The dosha check returns Mangal Dosha (Mild; Mars in the 12th) and Kaal Sarp Dosha (Present; the nodes in the 3rd and 9th). Neither is a lordship fact, each has its own page, and nothing here is a verdict on a person.

My birth time is only approximate. Is my ascendant still Pisces?
Check first. Pisces rises quickly, so a small error can move the Lagna to Aquarius or Aries. Run the Lagna calculator at the earliest and latest times you think possible; if the sign differs, read when the birth time is unknown.
Do Mars and Jupiter need particular houses to cause the Yog the verse names?
Sl. 43-44 sets no condition, and the Kundali's Yoga Karaka panel lists both in every Pisces-rising chart. The engine's yoga rows do depend on houses: Dharma-Karmadhipati needs Mars and Jupiter, the 9th and 10th lords, together in an angle or trine; Kendra-Kona needs them together or in mutual aspect anywhere. An exchange (Mars in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Scorpio), which Sl. 11-12 also counts, shows only as Parivarthana Yoga.
How many Kendra-Kona pairs can a Pisces ascendant form, and would BPHS count them?
Five, counting an angle lord and a trine lord together or in mutual aspect, as the engine does after Ch. 41 Sl. 28. A literal Sl. 15 bars none of them, since no angle or trine lord of Pisces owns the 6th, 8th or 12th.
Which grahas rule the dusthanas for a Pisces ascendant?
By Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 the evil houses are the 6th, 8th and 12th: from Pisces, Leo (the Sun), Libra (Venus) and Aquarius (Saturn). If one of these lords stands in any of the three, the engine lists Harsha (the 6th lord), Sarala (the 8th) or Vimala (the 12th) Yoga.
Will this app flag Kendradhipathya Dosha for a Pisces ascendant?
No. The engine tests Kendradhipathya Dosha only for Jupiter and Venus, when one owns an angle without owning the 1st. Jupiter owns the 1st and the 10th, and Venus the 3rd and 8th, so the check cannot fire for Pisces rising; Mercury, the other angle lord, is left out of the test.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
