In plain words
- You come across as calm and private. You notice everything and feel things deeply.
- People often find you hard to read at first. You trust slowly, but once you are loyal, you are loyal for life.
- You are drawn to work and bonds that feel real and meaningful. Examples are research, finance, medicine, psychology and strategy. You avoid small talk and half-hearted ties.
- In a meeting, you listen first, then make one sharp point.
- You go quiet and try to handle everything alone. It helps to say what is bothering you before it builds up.
- Why: Scorpio is ruled by Mars (drive, courage, protection). It is a water sign, so emotions run deep, and a fixed sign, so you hold on to goals, people and sometimes hurt. As the 8th sign it is linked to hidden things and change, which is why you look beneath the surface.
- Before reacting to a hurt, wait a day and ask one direct question.
- Scorpio rising is not "dangerous" or "vindictive". It is intensity, and that can be your biggest strength.
Scorpio is the ascendant, or lagna, when the sign Vrishchika is rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. That depends on the clock, not the calendar, so it needs a birth time (see when the birth time is unknown) and a place; the Lagna calculator takes both. This app counts whole-sign houses, so with Scorpio rising Scorpio is the 1st house, Sagittarius the 2nd, and so on to Libra as the 12th. Vrishchika belongs to Mars, which makes Mars the lagna lord.
The sign, its nakshatras and what each graha does in it are on the Scorpio rashi page, whose rising section also sets out the Ch. 34 verdict house by house. This page adds the house groups, the verse read against this lagna's lordships, Mars as lagna lord, and one worked chart. It sets out rules, not a portrait of Scorpio-rising people.
The twelve houses from Scorpio and the lords that rule them
Each house takes the lord of its sign. Rahu and Ketu own none in this engine, so seven grahas share twelve houses, five of them ruling two each. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the houses into angles (kendras), trines, succedents (panapharas), cadents (apoklimas), dusthanas and upachayas; the Lagna counts as both angle and trine (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7).
| House, sign | Lord | Group | BPHS Ch. 11 lists |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st, Scorpio | Mars | angle, trine | physique, appearance, innate nature (Sl. 2) |
| 2nd, Sagittarius | Jupiter | succedent | wealth, food, family (Sl. 3) |
| 3rd, Capricorn | Saturn | cadent, upachaya | valour, servants, siblings, journeys (Sl. 4) |
| 4th, Aquarius | Saturn | angle | conveyances, mother, lands and buildings (Sl. 5) |
| 5th, Pisces | Jupiter | succedent, trine | learning, authority (Sl. 6) |
| 6th, Aries | Mars | cadent, dusthana, upachaya | enemies, maternal uncle (Sl. 7) |
| 7th, Taurus | Venus | angle | wife (the text's word), travel, trade (Sl. 8) |
| 8th, Gemini | Mercury | succedent, dusthana | battle, enemies, forts (Sl. 9) |
| 9th, Cancer | Moon | cadent, trine | fortune, religion, shrines (Sl. 10) |
| 10th, Leo | Sun | angle, upachaya | profession, honour, living abroad (Sl. 11) |
| 11th, Virgo | Mercury | succedent, upachaya | income, prosperity (Sl. 12) |
| 12th, Libra | Venus | cadent, dusthana | expenses (Sl. 13) |
Three features organise what follows. No graha owns both an angle (4th, 7th, 10th) and a trine (5th, 9th), so Ch. 34 Sl. 13's rule finds none; the Sun rules the 10th, an angle, and the Moon the 9th, a trine. Mars, the lagna lord, also rules the 6th, whose lord Sl. 2-7 says gives evil effects. And Mercury, lord of the 8th, also owns the 11th, the pairing Sl. 2-7 calls "specifically harmful".
These lists feed the engine's yoga tests; Raj yoga for the Scorpio ascendant and Dhana yoga for the Scorpio ascendant take them lord by lord. They colour each period too; the Mahadasha pages for this ascendant are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
What the texts say: BPHS Ch. 34 for Vrischik Lagn
BPHS Ch. 34 is the chapter on yoga karakas. Its Sl. 35-36 is the verdict for Vrischik Lagn, laid out house by house on the Scorpio rashi page; the rules behind it are Sl. 2-14, and Sl. 8-10 names the natural benefics and malefics.
| Graha (rules) | Natural nature, Sl. 8-10 | What Sl. 2-7, 13 and 14 point to | Sl. 35-36 for Vrischik |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mars (1st, 6th) | malefic | Lagna lord, "specially auspicious"; but the 6th lord gives evil effects | neutral |
| Jupiter (2nd, 5th) | benefic | Owns a trine, so auspicious results; the 5th is "specially for wealth" | auspicious |
| Saturn (3rd, 4th) | malefic | The 3rd lord gives evil effects; Sl. 14 lifts a malefic that owns an angle only if it also owns a trine | malefic |
| Venus (7th, 12th) | benefic | A benefic owning an angle "will not give benefic effects"; a 12th lord's effects depend on association | malefic |
| Mercury (8th, 11th) | neutral | An 8th lord who also owns the 11th is "specifically harmful" | malefic |
| Moon (9th) | mediocre benefic | Owns a trine, so auspicious results | auspicious; "Yog Karakas" |
| Sun (10th) | malefic | A malefic owning an angle "will not remain inauspicious", though Sl. 14 asks for a trine as well | "Yog Karakas" |
Two rows pull against the rules, and in both the verse settles the matter. Mars is lagna lord and 6th lord at once; Sl. 35-36 calls it neutral. The Sun owns an angle without a trine, which Sl. 14 would not lift, yet the verse names it a Yog Karak beside the Moon, the pair of Sl. 11-12. In every other row the rules and the verse agree.
Is there a yogakaraka for Scorpio rising?
Yes, by the verse: Sl. 35-36 says "Sūrya, as well as Candr are Yog Karakas". Sl. 13's rule, a graha owning an angle (4th, 7th, 10th) and a trine (5th, 9th), finds none, so the two names rest on the verse alone, and this page quotes it. The Kundali's full reading prints a line for each, "special source of rise" with the graha's sign and house. The rashi page covers the Moon, whose debilitation sign is the Lagna.
The Bhrigu Sutras translator's comments on Scorpio rising
The comments printed after the sutras are the translator's, not Bhrigu's. At least ten pages name Scorpio as the ascendant; the table gives five.
| Graha for Scorpio rising | Placement | What the comment says | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun, 10th lord | 5th house, Pisces | A functional benefic there: the native "wealthy, learned, respected and very intelligent" | p. 23 |
| Moon, 9th lord | 1st house, Scorpio | The translator feels it will also be good, as lord of the 9th | pp. 32-33 |
| Mars, lagna and 6th lord | 2nd house, Sagittarius | A note lists Scorpio among six ascendants for which Mars gives auspicious results | p. 48 |
| Jupiter, 2nd and 5th lord | 2nd, 5th or 9th house | Powerful Dhana yogas in the 2nd; "very powerful and beneficial" in the 5th; an "extremely powerful yoga for prosperity and fame" in the 9th | pp. 75, 78-79, 83 |
| Saturn, 3rd and 4th lord | 2nd house, Capricorn | Among placements where the native is well off financially, with "some blemish" from the 3rd lordship | p. 100 |
The Sun, Moon and Jupiter rows agree with the verse. The Mars note rates Mars higher than the verse's neutral, and the Saturn row rates Saturn well though the verse calls it malefic. The verse classes a graha and the comments judge a placement; where they pull apart, the sources disagree, this page does not choose, and the engine follows BPHS. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 37-38 files Scorpio among the four signs of long ascension, those that take longest to rise.
Mars as lagna lord: BPHS Ch. 12 and Ch. 24
BPHS ties bodily comfort to the lagna lord: Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 says it lessens when the lagna lord is joined to a malefic or sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and holds in an angle or trine. Its "malefic" is the natural class of Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 (the Sun, Saturn, Mars, a weak Moon; Mercury by its company), so for Scorpio rising the Sun and Saturn count as malefic company whatever Sl. 35-36 calls them. Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives Mars the first 12 degrees of Aries, the 6th house, as Moolatrikona; the rashi page's table lists every graha's strong and weak house from Scorpio.
Ch. 24 Sl. 1-12 reads the lagna lord in each house: in the 1st physical happiness and prowess (Sl. 1); in the 3rd valour and wealth (Sl. 3); in the 10th royal honour, fame and self-earned wealth (Sl. 10); in the 11th gains, good qualities and fame (Sl. 11). In the 6th the verse turns on malefic company and a benefic's aspect (Sl. 6), and in the 12th on whether a benefic aspects or joins it (Sl. 12). Mars in each house has a page, from Mars in the 1st house to Mars in the 12th house; the Shad Bala calculator shows its strength in a given chart.
Which lordship yogas the engine can test for Scorpio rising
| Engine test | Lords for Scorpio rising | It lists the yoga when |
|---|---|---|
| Dharma-Karmadhipati | 9th Moon, 10th Sun | they share an angle or trine |
| Raja Yoga | 5th Jupiter, 9th Moon | they share one house |
| Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) | angle lords Mars, Saturn, Venus, Sun; trine lords Mars, Jupiter, Moon | an angle lord and a trine lord are together or in mutual aspect; 11 pairs can form |
| Harsha, Sarala, Vimala | 6th Mars, 8th Mercury, 12th Venus | that lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
The eleven pairs are Mars with Jupiter, the Moon, Saturn, Venus and the Sun; Jupiter with Saturn, Venus and the Sun; and the Moon with Saturn, Venus and the Sun. The test follows BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 28 (any relationship). Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 counts lords joined together only in an angle or trine, and Sl. 15 sets the yoga aside for a lord who also owns a dusthana. Read literally, that removes every pair with Mars (the 6th) or Venus (the 12th), leaving four, among them the verse's own pair, the Sun with the Moon. Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga gives the general rule.
Worked example: Scorpio rising at 9.38 degrees, New Delhi, 6 March 1985
This is not a real person's chart. It is a birth moment, 00:19 IST on 6 March 1985 in New Delhi, that a deterministic search (a check script scorpio-ascendant) found because it rises in Scorpio; re-enter it in the Birth Chart calculator. The engine puts the ascendant at 9.38 degrees. Each nakshatra takes 13 degrees 20 minutes (four padas of 3 degrees 20): Vishakha pada 4 fills the first 3.33 degrees of Scorpio and Anuradha the next 13.33, so 9.38 is in Anuradha, pada 2 (6.67 to 10.00).
| Graha | Rules (from Scorpio) | Sits in | House | Engine dignity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | 10th | Aquarius 21.50 | 4th | Neutral |
| Moon | 9th | Leo 3.35 | 10th | Neutral |
| Mars | 1st, 6th | Pisces 29.48 | 5th | Friendly sign |
| Mercury | 8th, 11th | Pisces 4.15 | 5th | Debilitated, combust |
| Jupiter | 2nd, 5th | Capricorn 12.34 | 3rd | Debilitated |
| Venus | 7th, 12th | Pisces 27.43 | 5th | Exalted |
| Saturn | 3rd, 4th | Scorpio 4.47 | 1st | Enemy sign |
| Rahu | none | Aries 28.13 | 6th | Neutral, retrograde |
| Ketu | none | Libra 28.13 | 12th | Neutral, retrograde |
- The lagna lord. Mars is in Pisces, the 5th, a trine, which Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 counts in the lagna lord's favour. It shares the sign with Venus, a natural benefic, and Mercury, neutral by Sl. 8-10, and stands 0.52 of a degree short of the end of the sign (30 minus 29.48). Venus is 2.05 degrees behind it (29.48 minus 27.43).
- The verse's pair. The Sun is in Aquarius, the 4th, and the Moon in Leo, the 10th, opposite signs and so in mutual aspect, both in angles; neither owns a dusthana. The engine lists this link, and the full reading's Yoga Karaka panel prints "Sun - special source of rise, currently in Aquarius (house 4)" and "Moon - special source of rise, currently in Leo (house 10)".
- Venus and Mars. Together in the 5th, a trine, they meet Sl. 11-12's location condition, but read literally Sl. 15 bars them, Mars owning the 6th and Venus the 12th. The engine lists both links in one row, by Ch. 41 Sl. 28.
- The rest. Saturn, lord of the 3rd and 4th, is in the Lagna, in an enemy sign; Jupiter, lord of the 2nd and 5th, is debilitated in the 3rd. The 6th, 8th and 12th lords all stand in the 5th, so there is no Harsha, Sarala or Vimala row, and the 9th and 10th lords are in different houses, so no Dharma-Karmadhipati row. None of the Bhrigu Sutras translator's comments on Scorpio rising covers a placement here.
The yoga list also carries Ubhayachari and Pasa (placement patterns, not lordship) and Argala Raj Yoga. The dosha list shows only Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild: Venus owns the 7th but not the 1st), which has its own page. Nothing here is a verdict on a person.
- My birth time is only approximate. Is my ascendant still Scorpio?
- It may not be. Compute the chart at both ends of your time range with the Lagna calculator and see whether the sign changes; if it does, read when the birth time is unknown.
- Do the Sun and Moon need particular houses to be the verse's Yog Karakas?
- No. Sl. 35-36 sets no condition, and the Kundali's Yoga Karaka panel names both in every Scorpio-rising chart. A yoga between them is another matter: the engine's Kendra-Kona row needs them joined or in mutual aspect, in any house, and its Dharma-Karmadhipati row needs them together in an angle or trine; Sl. 11-12 would ask for an angle or trine if they are joined.
- How many Kendra-Kona pairs can a Scorpio ascendant form, and would BPHS count them?
- Eleven. The engine counts an angle lord and a trine lord together or in mutual aspect (Ch. 41 Sl. 28). A literal Sl. 15 would set aside the seven that include Mars or Venus, leaving Jupiter and the Moon each with Saturn and the Sun.
- In which houses does BPHS favour Mars for a Scorpio ascendant?
- Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 counts an angle or trine in the lagna lord's favour and the 6th, 8th and 12th against it. From Scorpio the angles and trines are Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, Pisces and Cancer; the 6th, 8th and 12th are Aries, Gemini and Libra, and Aries is also a sign Mars owns.
- Which grahas rule the dusthanas for a Scorpio ascendant?
- Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 names the 6th, 8th and 12th as the evil bhavas; from Scorpio they are Aries (Mars), Gemini (Mercury) and Libra (Venus). When one of these lords sits in any of the three, the engine lists Harsha (the 6th lord), Sarala (the 8th) or Vimala (the 12th) Yoga.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
